I really love dnd and I'm very excited about next big campaign I'm going to take part in but I have this issue-- I can't roleplay. At all :') Which is weird because I used to rp A LOT with my friends as a kid. But now I'm struggling and last game it even led to some problems which caused other players to point out my lack of socializing with pcs and npcs. Soo any tips from fellow dnd players? 👉👈
If it helps, don't consider yourself as not roleplaying.
Interacting/talking with NPCs and PCs is only a part of roleplaying; the social and conversational one. Roleplaying itself is done by considering what makes sense in character and acting according to that, even if it may not be strategically the best option. (at least that is one way to describe it 😅)
Wether a character decides to sneakily take someone out or to just punch their lights out — that's roleplaying! A character with low charisma deciding to avoid facing a difficult conversation could be perfectly reasonable, if that is the character you wanna play =)
As for tips in regards to socialising in character:
remind yourself, that you are not your character and your character is not you (They might say something awful, but that doesn't reflect on you)
ask one player — or more, if they would be alright to roleplay a conversation between your characters outside the session as practice (before, after, or even on a different day)
If the actual speaking in character is an issue, you can narrate what your character generally says
I hope any of this will be helpful for you <3 (Maybe you guys have some ideas? @sirobvious @disgruntledexplainer @thepressbetwixt )
Thank you! These seem useful :)
I think my main issue is that I'm subconsciously trying to play dnd as if it's a video game with quests (probably related to the fact that my first dnd-ish experience was baldur's gate 3). Going from point A to point B without sidetracking. I just simply don't know what to pay attention to in a location or a conversation, don't know what to talk about with pcs and npcs if it's not related to the task. It's not that I don't want to (I really do), I just can't come up with anything fun
Being used to only focusing on the main mission and struggling with "side content"; I can see how that makes things more difficult, yeah.
One or two more ideas then could be:
agreeing on a connection from before the game starts between your character and minimum one other player character — maybe old friends, lovers, disbanded party members (one string to pull for interactions outside of the main mission, more focused on characters and their relationships)
choosing to focus on one type of detail for every location/conversation? Even if it's not related to the mission, you could decide to keep note of any Names/Colours/Outfits/Locations being mentioned in character or by the GM (similar to games children play on a car ride; "how many yellow cars are passing us?" Might help keeping the interest?)

As an aside; I believe you don't have to come up with anything fun. Only to be open to engage with what is going on at the table at that moment. (And maybe request other players to invite you/your character into conversations/situations in session before it begins. Helps to not have to carry the conversation alone <3)
