What is detected at 6 weeks is a “fluttering” that isn’t actually a heartbeat. The heart is still in the early part of its development as an organ.
“Rather, at six weeks of pregnancy, an ultrasound can detect “a little flutter in the area that will become the future heart of the baby,” said Dr. Saima Aftab, medical director of the Fetal Care Center at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami. This flutter happens because the group of cells that will become the future “pacemaker” of the heart gain the capacity to fire electrical signals, she said.
But the heart is far from fully formed at this stage, and the “beat” isn’t audible; if doctors put a stethoscope up to a woman’s belly this early on in her pregnancy, they would not hear a heartbeat, Aftab told Live Science. As the above article notes, the entire first trimester is the time of organ development. This is why 80% of miscarriages happen in the first trimester. These miscarriages happen usually because something has gone horribly wrong in the organ development of the embryo, and it does not develop into a viable fetus that can survive outside of the womb. Whether through a genetic anomaly or environmental risk factors, that’s what happens.
It is scientifically ludicrous to view a clump of cells still developing and that is 100% dependent on another person as “alive.” That is what an embryo is at 6 weeks. That is what a fetus is up until the final week of the second trimester.
An overwhelming majority of abortions (88%) occur in the first trimester - the first 12 weeks. Of those, over half (52%) occur in the first seven weeks.

On a personal note, I have several medical conditions that almost virtually guarantee that any pregnancy I have will not develop normally. The embryo will not develop into a viable fetus; these medical conditions virtually guarantee that any pregnancy I have will end in a miscarriage. The chances of me having a pregnancy that is successful and carried to term or a viable premature birth is so close to zero it might as well be zero. I also have a greater risk of an ectopic pregnancy, which always results in embryo death and carries a high risk of maternal death.
And people like you would call me a murderer if I have an abortion at 6-8 weeks instead of putting myself through all the horrible risks, through the emotional pain and turmoil of carrying a pregnancy that I know is not going to result in a living, breathing child. And if by some miracle the pregnancy made it into the second trimester (the one miscarriage I’ve had so far happened at 11 weeks), the chances of a 2nd-trimester miscarriage having very adverse effects on me, up to and including death, rise. And at that stage, in order to help mitigate the risk of one of those adverse effects, I would need a D&C to evacuate the remnants of the pregnancy and prevent life-threatening infection. Which people like you would also shame me for (and have already shamed me for). They have literally valued a clump of cells that never had any chance to survive outside of my body greater than an adult, living, breathing person - me - getting to continue to live.
Of course, I shouldn’t have to explain all of this to you. It’s none of your fucking business, nor is it anyone else’s fucking business. But I have chosen to do this because in fucking 2019 we still have people like you who feel free to judge other people’s private lives, and if sharing my personal details will help even one woman/uterus owner to stand up to bullshit like what you just spouted, then sharing it is worth it to me.
You do not know all of the factors of another woman’s decision regarding pregnancy. You can’t, it’s simply not possible. And you certainly don’t know the relevant, proven and widely accepted science regarding this issue, you’ve proven that. You are merely repeating the lies you have been told by people with an agenda to control and subjugate women and treat them as disposable incubators.
