l think I finally found a good trans haircut because my sister's immediate reaction to me styling it was "Oh you look like young Brad Pitt" do I believe her? no. but does it make me very happy? absolutely
okay so most people in America don't really participate in courting anymore but apparently other places still do and I was curious what that would look like so after some research I discovered that all of the "weird" stuff I do when I like someone a lot (romantically or otherwise) Is courting behavior. I just assumed I was weird and autistic which I am but in this case I'm actually not as abnormal as I thought.
modern dating culture has always felt very foreign to me. to some extent it's because I'm non-monogamous but another aspect is that often I've seen this level of apprehension and unwillingness to put yourself out there, to openly express love even If it's not reciprocated. to some extent I think this is out of a fear of making someone you love uncomfortable or making them feel pressured which is fair but I would argue is only a fear to begin with because for some reason people think your feelings for someone are only valid if reciprocated. my mindset is that when you love someone the most important part isn't that they feel the same way it's that you make them happy. I mean yeah it's nice if they feel the same way but that should never be the expectation.
courting isn't about convincing them to love you it's about expressing yourself, so even if they reject you you know you still gave them a piece of your love, you still made their life even just a bit better.
The goal of dating should never be finding someone who loves you it should be giving love out to the world because when you do that your world is full of love.
I love Harley and Ivy more than anything but Harley and the joker has so much potential to be intriguing if written correctly, like she was his therapist that's so convoluted and messy.
also Why is it that half of the time she suddenly becomes a better person after dumping Joker, like I get that she's much happier and healthier but she didn't become evil purely because of him she has her own choice and agency and what, you think she just murdered people because ohhh Joker said so?
NO she takes pleasure in killing people I mean it doesn't help that she's probably on substances most of the time but my point is I think most writers give the Joker way too much power over Harley in the wrong ways. just because she's an abuse victim doesn't mean that her killing people is it all justified and it also doesn't mean that she didn't make those choices.
pretending like all of the evil shit she did was the fault of the Joker is just taking away even more of her agency. One choice doesn't make you into Harley Quinn, that's the entire reason the joker's philosophy is wrong so why are we trying to prove him right?????
doing so also completely contradicts the ideals of Batman. it's similar to how the Joker didn't make Red Hood Batman did because he was his father and it wasn't just his death it was his whole life that made Jason into the person he is. Harley has likely always had some empathy issues That's probably why she got into psychology in the first place as an attempt to understand the emotions of others and the abnormality of her own mind.
that's also why the Joker was so appealing to her. to Harley the Joker was her. they both have a shallow understanding of empathy and occasional urges to cause harm to others as well as a general disregard for their well-being and propensity for (implied) substance abuse he was the first one in her life to understand her in a way that nobody else had.
The first reason Harley stayed with the Joker so long and the reason she'd probably tell you if you asked was because in her mind if he couldn't be helped then she couldn't either, they were in the same boat. the difference is she wants to get to shore and he's content staying adrift.
The second and, in my book, more interesting reason Harley stayed with the Joker is because he didn't hate her for being sick. He accepted all of the things that she had been taught to hate about herself with open arms in fact he told her that not only was it okay to be this way but it was better, It made her superior, it made her enlightened and they could be enlightened together.
The worst part is he believed every word.
In Harley's mind there was only one option because at least if she embraced the darkness herself instead of letting it consume her she could at least feel that she had a choice, she could pretend this was a path she was choosing and not the inevitable result of A life of neglect abuse and emotional isolation.
Once you make that kind of choice you can't ever go back to the way you were and frankly I don't think Harley wants to. what she needs is something new. to make her own choices, to have people who love her for who she, is people who are willing to understand her even though she's different. she needs space to learn that no one else gets to decide who you are, that's your job.
what she doesn't need is to become a hero, she doesn't need to seek redemption she doesn't want for guilt she does not feel. The concept of a hero means nothing to her, because she's been on the other side she's been sent to the hospital by the so-called hero and weaned back to health by the so-called ecoterrorist so why the hell would she want to be a hero?
she's spent her whole life trying to help other people, trying to appease them trying to get them to like her because maybe just maybe that would be as good as being "normal" maybe it would fill the hole in her chest but it was never quite enough. Even with the Joker it was the same all she wanted was for him to love her because she thought that would fill the void but it didn't.
that's why The idea that she still hasn't learned that the only way to fill that void is to love herself would be so sad the whole point of her character Arc is learning that. Harley has never been motivated by empathy that's the whole point of being a villain they're not exactly known for being empathetic So she has no reason to be a hero.
I'm honestly not sure what she would do but that's mostly just because it's never been allowed to just have her own motivations she always has to tag along with someone else's in an attempt to gain their love. maybe her motivations could be as simple as enjoying chaos or wanting to bring a demented version of "fun" to Gotham, I really don't care but for God's sake this girl needs her own goddamn motives.
