If you ever hear the phrase "fascism is aesthetics as politics," that's what this post is talking about.

It's not about being tough on crime, because the absolute toughest most brutal measure you could take against "crime" as a social problem is to alleviate poverty, and increase access to education, healthcare and social mobility.

It's about performing "tough on crime" as an aesthetic by enacting violence against a prop, i.e. minorities and the impoverished, who are fetishized and objectified to represent "crime." They are brutalized as punishment for crime, but never with the purpose of alleviating the problem of crime.

This is why a lot of conservatives and other right wingers can get straight up angry when you suggest things like reform or social measures to reduce crime. They don't want crime to be reduced, they want an eternal war against "crime" because it provides an arena for the righteous to demonstrate virtue by brutalizing their enemies.

one thing that I keep coming back to about nikki's character is that to me, there's a sense of infantilisation after the wish is made. we know from the get-go that whoever or whatever has overtaken her autonomy is young, fresh, learning as it goes (see: confusing her grief over sandy as sandy being her cat, and then having to correct herself) but additionally, i feel we see nikki regress in a misogynistic manner. wishing she was in work, even though she couldn't wait to get out of the place, so she can be with bear. not wanting him to leave her side at the party. the delivery of 'actually? no!' outside bear's car sounding like a petulant child when she's first under the control of the wish. the frown. the tantrum in the restaurant and the baby-like crying in the middle of night. the needing bear to tell her to shower, to check that she's not ill, to give her permission to make decisions about her own wellbeing without his input. the needing to be scolded when she puts together sandy's memorial before she can recognise the immorality of it. when bear tells her off for making the sandwich and says 'you cannot do that!' like a parent. yes, wish nikki is a brand-new being, but also, wish nikki presents herself as someone more dependant, incapable, and childish, despite nikki being an intelligent, accomplished writer, because it automatically assumes the woman bear wants is someone entirely reliant on him. the ideal woman is a submissive and mouldable one.
