It's been nearly 10 years since I came back from Tokyo.
I'm practicing Japanese in Duolingo...
I keep bowing.
The habit is still deeply ingrained.

People will be like “duolingo sucks because it uses AI, here’s some alternatives” and not one of them includes a language with less than 20 million speakers
Yeah, I really don't want to give up on Gaidhlig.
"comparing apples and oranges" has always been funny to me as an expression because people's go to exampe of two things so radically different that they defy any useful comparison are apples. and oranges. like you would struggle to find a more comparable pair of objects than that. theyre literally sold right next to each other in most stores.
wikipedia has a whole ass section dedicated to international variants of the idiom so let me quickly run through them
see this is even worse than oranges. pears and apples are like the most comparable things ever. france takes another L
ok so this is what i mean. these are measures of temperature and texture and are in fact not very comparable. молодцы ребята продолжаем в том же духе.
colombia wins most vivid image invoked hands down. would not want that to happen to me.
and i think we can all agree romania wins this hands down. everyone give a big round of applause to romania
In Hebrew we used to say להשוות מחט לשחת (lehashvot makhat l'shakhat) (compare a needle to haystack) but nowadays people usually say להשוות מחט לתחת (lehashvot makhat l'takhat) (compare a needle to a butt)
OMFG I CAN'T STOP LAUGHING
"THEY CAN FLY?!?"
Language learning blogs!!! Reblog (or comment) so I can follow you! Doesn't matter the language, I just would like to see more people studying and learning
I hope langblr existence isn't that dead.
(Reblogged this to a few of my side blogs for exposure)
My problem with being an introvert in linguistics and language is that I’m here to study conversation scientifically like it’s a biological function of a different species.
And then they make me go to conversation classes and talk to people.
Like no I want to study the talking, I don’t want to DO the talking

The Doctor: ((committed Murder By Rock when he has like 12)) “oh- ah yes, terrible. Mmhm, absolutely not like them- at all, nuh uh.

so if you're anything like me and you often fall into the trap of watching YouTube videos ABOUT language learning, instead of, like, actually learning your TL, I have a YouTuber to recommend!!
Her name is Elysse Davega, and she's by far the best language learning YouTuber I've seen, as most of her videos aren't just her talking about how she learns languages, but instead her actually going out and USING her languages (and there are captions for all of them!!)
her languages (right now) are: German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French, Turkish, and Farsi, though most of her videos are in German
just out of curiosity, what do you use to track your language study hours? (the dark mode one) thanks in advance!
lingotrack!! it took me a while to backlog all my media logs but it's taken over my life fr
convinced another friend to quit Duolingo today, let’s fucking go!!!
I want to delete Duo, I really do, but I'm learning Scottish Gaidhlig primarily and it is really difficult to find resources as an American. It doesn't even have all the features that languages like Spanish and German do. I can't use BBC TV/radio stations, most of the YT channels I've found are way too advanced for me, I have been using Duolingo for over ten years and I don't know what is worth switching to. ):
write a diary, find list of questions and answer them in text, letters to friends/fictional characters/historical figures etc, short stories, answer posts on social media, translate something someone else has written, write a short conclusion of a news article.
the internet really started to feel like a big ad to me when i tried to get back into the language learning community on youtube but realised every youtuber i used to watch are now only making videos about productivity and learning a language as fast as possible, or more efficiently, trying to convince you to use this method instead of this other, routine planning FUCK IT'S SO DAMN EXHAUSTING that community used to be a place for me to just enjoy the company of a fellow language lover, see what they were doing, how they were learning, not them trying to sell me their own routine, it was just about sharing. i don't need a new method or a new routine or to learn this language in 3 months, i'm fine the way i am. what i do need is a place to rest from studying but still enjoy the world of languages and learning.
if anyone else learning norwegian is deleting duolingo because of their FUCKASS AI BULLSHIT! i have found a pretty great alternative which is free!
The ultimate weapon to learn Norwegian!
it's basically a spaced repetion flashcard dealy, except its got grammar explainations, real voices for pronounciation, and basically lets you pick whatever you want to look at. They also have a swedish one which i havent tried but i assume is equally as good. They also! Don't replace their contract workers with ai! crazy stuff there folks
