unfortunately i dont think its queerbaiting if the creator is just so terminally heterosexual that they never remotely considered the same gender relationship their show is centered around could be read as romantic. it is deeply painful however.

By definition you can't accidentally queerbait. Queerbaiting is specifically using a same sex pair from the show to market the show to queer audiences with no intention of ever following through on a romantic relationship.

There is officially licensed Destiel merch signed off on by Kripke. Teen Wolf had a commercial with the actors for Derek and Stiles draped over each other talking about being "on a ship." Both shows actively used scenes between them as marketing while actively mocking fans for wanting them together. Sherlock has multiple characters refer to Johnlock as a couple, including characters we're supposed to believe are never wrong about human behavior and pushed those scenes in marketing. Then they acted insulted when fans saw them as a couple.

That's queerbaiting.

Done on accident it would just be queer subtext. Done because they had no other choice due to censorship is queer coding.

The specific meaning of the word is really starting to get lost and it's a pretty important one to keep accurate. It describes a very specific phenomenon that was done repeatedly and maliciously for decades and is meant to examine that specifically.

Doing it on accident sucks, but it isn't a tactic of capitalism intentionally intended to suppress queer representation while making money from queer fans.

if there was ever a hamilton-style musical about chopin's life, i'd want the opening number to consist of:

small groups of actors gathered together, representing various persons and professions that have shaped the persisting image of chopin as a person and musician. think people like his "biographer" franz liszt or musical historians that have documented him in the years after his death.

each group has one designated "singer". the "singer" starts to rattle off some gossipy, inaccurate misconception about chopin that they, or the general profession they represent, have introduced into his mythos. they do so to the hectic, twittery melody and tempo of the "minute waltz".

meanwhile, the actor playing chopin moves from group to group as they take turns singing their parts. he says nothing, but appears increasingly bewildered and confused. if chopin knows the singer personally, his reactions are tailored to their relationship.

the overly sweet, dulcet middle section probably ends up going to liszt so he can wax poetic about chopin being a perfect seraphic angel baby who has done nothing wrong ever. chopin is appropriately weirded out.

the last section of the waltz becomes a refrain where everyone sings all of their parts all at once while converging on chopin. he's nearly lost in the crowd, but is saved when the minute waltz descends into its close, everyone suddenly pulls away from him, and the stage is plunged into total darkness except for a single stark spotlight focused directly on him. chopin then begins his opening monologue to the audience, commenting on the conflicting narratives that have defined his memory and how he'd like to present the true story of life.

Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.

I want you to understand this. I NEED you to understand this. My mother read me the hobbit as bedtime story, and I started pushing myself to read before pre-school so I could in fact read the hobbit for myself instead of having to wait for bedtime.

I didn't do so right away but jesus wept I PUSHED myself to learn to read SPECIFICALLY so I could read The Hobbit! It is, in fact, a children's story! And children only see page count as 'there is a lot of this fun story to read!'

I read the Count of Monte Cristo at 12. It was 1274 pages. The idea that young people can't read longer items is horrific. Tiny "not yet hit my growth spurt" me took one look at a book nearly as big as I was and got excited. Was it tough at times? Sure. I also ended up thinking hashish was opium, because I hadn't heard the term before and was working off context clues, but I was able to follow the story and enjoyed it. And I was so dang proud of myself when I finished it.

I first read Animal Farm when I was 8, and was completely fascinated by the story. At the time, the references towards actual historical events went completely over my head. But when I was told that there was more to it than just a tragic story about talking animals, it made me even more excited to read it again. Kids aren't dumb. They can read books that aren't specifically for them.

The Hobbit is legitimately a kids book, though.

An author I follow on IG posted about her older books getting new covers and having the opportunity of going through them and edit them to make the referencers more “modern” like group chats instead of group texts and I have seen other people mention about older books getting updates like this (was it pretty little liars and the deal changing the name of tv shows to more recents ones?) and I have to say I absolutely hate this.

I hate that they are trying to modernize older books with things that are going to be outdated in a couple of years. I hate that authors can go and take out the age of their characters after a decade (looking at you six of crows). I hate that authors do this and don’t tell their fans they are doing this.

Leave the books how they were written, add disclaimers at the start if you want but don’t touch the actual text. A book is a result of the time period it was written, adding stuff like scrolling through TikTok in a book that was published way before social media existed doesn’t make sense and I hate it.
