Orion #21
Orion: Ahhh... After so long apart, how good it feels to be whole again!
Lightray: Your Astro-Harness! But how???! How could you reconstruct it so?
Orion: Have you not guessed, Lightray? You who know me as well as any living being?
Lightray: You are my closest friend, Orion. But you have depths of darkness within you wherein I would never seek to trespass.
Orion: And for that, I love you. That darkness is the secret to my success, Lightray, when its ferocity does not betray me. The power that turns in my hand. The Astro-Force, the Harness, my wristbands are one and the same. They are a part of Source and cannot be destroyed. Not by mortals. Perhaps not even by Gods! A power beyond the comprehension of the flesh. They are the wrath of the Source, Lightray! And I, who alone stand poised between the ferocity of Apokolips and the compassion of New Genesis, am its wielder. A light that burns in the heart of darkness!
My Jonathan Crane handmade bjd wip photos. finished photos are in another post.
The torso went through lots of intense changes and I find it quite interesting
Idk how they could take the basic concept of âwhite leotard with a boob window and blue bootsâ and make it so hideous. Truly.
Look at the difference. This is so. Literally Harassment vs flirting
Itâs funny that Iâm watching a video about superhero costume design when I see this post, haha.
Youâre 100% right, the one on the left just doesnât look as good as the one on the right. I very much blame it on the gloves and the boots, theyâre just so long and take up the sight of the suit more than they need to.
Itâs the same issue I have with the previous, horrendous jacket look, where thereâs way too much red, and despite the costume ostensibly being designed to show off her muscles, theyâre either hidden by the jacket, or broken up by the gloves.
Case in point.
Power Girlâs design, and I know this is gonna sound like Iâm talking about That One Thing but Iâm *not*, works best when itâs top-heavy.
(I swear Iâm not talking about That One Thing.)
The strong, heavy white over her torso and arms is clean and clear, emphasizing those aspects like her muscles while not being distracting with busy line work or designs. It immediately conveys what sheâs going for, while having the thighs out means her skin tone nicely contrasts it.
I also think itâs a matter of color balance too. Karen works best with a heavy white (main costume), a close (but essentially invisible in terms of acknowledgement) flesh-tone (thighs, face, chest), then a semi-equal split between blue and red (short gloves and boots help keep that balance), followed by the quaternary color yellow/gold (hair, belt buckle, cape clasp/pauldron).
It just works!
Itâs also why (surprise surprise whoâda thunk Iâd bring him up) I love Plastic Manâs classic design. I could probably give a whole lecture about why he works. He carries that same top-heavy attitude, but itâs taken to an absurd degree by the unique patterns of his belt and the strings on his chest. It conveys strength while being loud and impossible to ignore. It also exaggerates the top-heavy look by making him literally barefoot and toeless as well pulling down the v-cut on his chest, drawing your focus there as well as giving a subtle âMâ shape.
(I know Iâm adding more than I need to but I love the design and love talking about it.)
Another aspect I love is the way that everything is so neatly separate on the suit so that when he stretches, itâs actually really obvious what part is which. Heâs broken up into seven sections:
1. thin Flesh (hands), 2. thick Red (arms), 3. thick Red & Flesh (torso), 4. thick Black & Yellow (belt), 5. thick Flesh (legs), 6. medium Flesh (neck), and 7. Flesh & White & Black (head)
Itâs also why Iâm not too big on designs that add tons of black and/or shorten the arms and/or alter the v-cut, like in his 2018 redesign (sorry Doc Shaner youâre still the goat) or Young Justice season 3âs look, they really throw off the color balance and general unique look to the character and make him look⊠more generic. The Terrifics costume he had worked better because as an all-new design with only 4 colors instead of 5, among other changes, it stands out.
Anyways Plastic Man and Power Girl are both heavily underrated top-heavy leotard GOATâs and they both deserve more respect on their designs.
