Rose Jaffe in Berlin

Ghost Gallery is currently taking residence in Berlin and we were pleased to find out that US artist Rose Jaffe, whom we have admired from across the pond, is doing the same. 

Jumping at this opportunity, we went to check out Rose’s exhibition at Takt Kunstprojektraum and had a look around her studio space where she had been living and working.

Urban Spree presents Magic Life

For Urban Spreegalerie, ‘Magic Life’ will be their closing show of 2015. The group show will feature 9 European artists of the urban contemporary genre who will bring a mix of murals, installations and canvas works, showcasing their ‘Abstract Graffiti’ style. 

Amongst these artists will be collective groups The IRGA IRGA CREW from Austria and NARTUR art group from Germany.

Paying respects to Joel Millerchip’s ‘Tears for Murphy’

All the usual aspects of a wake were present; whisky, black outfits and crowd chatter, but this wake came in the form of an art exhibition at Doomed Gallery London from illustrator Joel Millerchip. A project we interviewed Joel about back in February this year, ‘Tears for Murphy’ explores the grieving process through young lives and how it can be represented physically through image choice. We have really enjoyed seeing TFM develop and come together to present an amazing mixed media show of storytelling and character exploration.

‘LAX/LHR’ StolenSpace x Thinkspace

A dream of a group show opened this week at StolenSpace Gallery London. Co-curated by Thinkspace Gallery in LA, these two galleries represent the new contemporary art movement better than anyone. Row after row, every piece shone with imagination, personality and craftsmanship; a trait often bypassed in pricey modern art galleries. The talent was real, many works sold quickly and opening night vibes were high.

Two Show Thursday: LAX/LHR + Tears for Murphy

This Thursday 3rd September is too much. Two opening nights for killer exhibits, both of which bring New Contemporary Art at it’s brightest to the UK’s capital. 

Tears for Murphy: If you remember one of our first blog posts at the start of 2015, you’ll remember Joel Millerchip and his grieving rabbit illustrations as we interviewed him on his Tears for Murphy project. Jay Shells: The Rap Quotes

After seeing Jay Shells in Vimeo’s “Staff Picks” selection a year ago, the idea of his project stuck with me. We walk past signs everyday but not many that quote lyrics from a former member of your neighbourhood, turned rap star. Jay is back at the project with fresh quotes and new cities for 2015.

Chloe Lee: Punk Phemales

Here are some killer ladies, in some pieces quite literally, as US artist Chloe Lee paints and pens her characters holding a bloody weapon or severed head. But above that, their style is even more killer with classic sailor tattoos, ear stretchers and vibrantly dyed hair. Also sometimes; horns.

Omega Tbs: Hip-Hop Influence

From Valencia Spain, Omega sprays his quirky characters on walls tripping passers-by with the eccentric, larger than life expressions staring back at them. But Omega’s style really comes to life when applied with pencil, pen or digitally. A fine talent to capture detail in personalities with colour gradients that set the tone.

Alison Blickle: Sisterhood

Looking at Alison Blickle’s art: mythology, Florence and The Machine vocals and David Bowie body suits come to mind. Often, Alison cleverly brings the narrative into our dimension using an installation effect with the plates and vases she handmade which duplicate the design within the painted scene, acting as fossils for the myth.

Ben Venom: Comfy Art

Hand-made quilts are an art form and none more so than in the way Ben Venom presents his. His style is known to be “opposing forces colliding” with the juxtaposition of a traditional conservative craft and extreme imagery inspired by motorcycle gangs and tattoos.

NoseGo: Layers pon Layers

After being denied an art route by professional organisations, NoseGo aka. Yis Goodwin, took to the streets and made his art public as a result. Owning an occurring bodily style of dismantled layers, the “core” concept of his creatures symbolise life experience in the way certain things can combine together. As a creatures grows or develops, pieces can also be seen “shedding” away. NoseGo is a great artist to check out further as the videos on his website and instagram offer insight into how much detail he puts in to each strand of fur as well as being a pretty cool guy.

Hellen Jo: Comics + Animation

Hellen’s area of excellence: bad-ass hipster females of mystery. Pull out a random illustrated frame of Hellen’s and you will be so satisfied with the skill of capturing the ambient scene that you won’t care about it’s backstory. It probably adds to the joy of Hellen’s art. It’s all there for you to apply your own story to, full of teenage melancholy and mischief.

Cory Benhatzel: Ghostly Floriography

Incorporating the language of flowers aka. floriography into her work, Cory creates beautifully mystical and symbolic paintings using acrylic on birch panel. Cory’s creatures of the forest captivate you with their blank stare and glowing silhouettes in the reflection of the moonlight. Based in New York, Cory exhibits mostly around the US.

Brucey: Monochrome Mayhem

‘Monochrome mayhem’ are the words used to describe Bruce Parker’s illustrative works in his website bio. Hailing from Newcastle UK, Brucey’s colour palette may just be a result of his hometown footy shirt. His art holds a hint of looney tunes and loads of iconic playfulness. A three-eyed character, similar to that of Nibbler from Futurama, is an occurring creature in Brucey’s work and acts as a ‘tag’ or ‘logo’ for his name.

Tobias Kroeger: Faces

Based in Germany, Tobias Kroeger uses a nude colour palette with a mixed medium of spray paint, markers and oil. Painting murals for the streets and canvases for exhibitions, Tobias focuses on distorted faces with toothy smiles and oddly set eyes. Tobias recently exhibited ‘Fools’ in Kunstmix Gallery, Germany.

Digital Graffiti: INSA’s Gif-iti

Graffiti GIFs feel like a juxtaposition of old school meets new school and leading the way is UK artist INSA. Made on the streets, mastered on the computer, shared on the internet. That’s how the process tends to go and it’s a pretty impressive way of working, with a digital friendly outcome that sits at home on blog spaces such as Tumblr. INSA’s gif-iti work comes with an app that can be downloaded from his website.
