You know, an interesting tumblr transformation that's happened gradually, and which I've seen no one talk about: ask-culture has essentially dropped off to nothing.

By which I mean, asks used to be WAY more of the tumblr economy. They used to be more common to send, and receive, and see. They were integral to the collaborative, forum-like behavior of old tumblr communities, not even to speak on the HUGE number of ask-blogs that used to exist to only be interacted with in ask-form.

I'm not saying this in a vying-for-attention way but instead in an observational way: I used to get way way more asks in like 2015, even with a fraction of my follower count. I wonder if it's due to the homogenization of social media sites? There's a lot more of this divide between "content creator" and "consumer" instead of just a bunch of peer blogs who would talk to each other. "Asks" aren't really a thing on twitter, are they? And as I understand it, the closest thing to an "ask" on instagram or tiktok would be a creator screenshotting some comment and responding to it in a new reel or video or whatever those content mediums are. Are asks just too tumblr-specific? Is that aspect of the site culture dying out as more and more people converge to using all their social media sites in the same way?

it's probably from assholes making asks a minefield of trolling/harassment for years with no real blocking ability, which turned people off from allowing asks on their blogs so as a whole the site moved away from it

but now that we do have better blocking, we should try to revive it.

I’m not being dramatic when I say this — the way season 5 played out left an entire community of queer people devastated. and queer people have shed enough tears over things as big as life and death, without having to also mourn queerbait. we shouldn’t have to mourn a lack of media expression and representation. especially from a show that built itself on the hearts of queer love and experiences. They dragged it out for 10 years — WITH LITERAL PROOF AND REASON TO BELIEVE IT WOULD HAPPEN, MIND YOU. after ten years of crafting a beautiful and powerful queer narrative built off of our experiences, our feelings, our tears, our grief, our hope, they held it just out of reach and then dangled it over the holidays like a gift we’d get to keep. A gift we’d get to hold onto after a world of SCRAPS, of bare minimum queerness within media. not only did they intentionally lead the show toward byler being canon THE ENTIRETY OF THOSE TEN YEARS, but they then ripped it away like it meant nothing…they let the fan base literally sink into grief over it. like happy new year!! FUCK everything

The Duffers are horrible people, simply put. They knew what they were doing, and they knew what the fanbase was increasingly thinking would happen. However, they openly admitted that they disregarded us as mere "noise" that they needed to block out. And this was in response to a question as to whether they considered being clear about the fate of Byler.

No, they never considered that. They even said they wouldn't "change course," suggesting that fans thinking Byler could happen was a necessary aspect of their story.

The queerbaiting was intentional. Perhaps not for its own sake but just so that it would be believable that Will would keep thinking he had a shot, but intentional nonetheless.

So, I guess Will's queerbaiting was intentional, ours was incidental because we dared to emotionally connect with him as a character due to seeing in him a reflection of ourselves.

They didn't realize people would see themselves in Will. Despite claims to the contrary, the show was written predominantly for cishet white male incels. They figured the entire audience would sympathize with Mike's plight of being a self-centered person with zero redeeming qualities who feels like his girlfriend is too good for him, but also believes that he's inherently entitled to her because he was nice to her when they first met.

The audience was supposed to root for Mike to copy the gestures and feelings that Will was pouring into Mike, and apply them to his relationship with El. And when Mike did the absolute bare minimum for El, the audience was supposed to stand and cheer for him.

El was supposed to just expect to be treated terribly for the rest of her life because Mike is a "nice guy" who is "trying." And that should be enough for a woman.
