Not defending Van, but Jacob DID NOT think Ericka knew about the kid. That's the reason he mentioned it.
Personally, I'm back and forth on Van disclosing, and generally land at you don't get to push for more and act possessive without telling her the kid exists. So Van crossed the line this episode when he started acting like a jealous boyfriend, which also violates the terms of their agreement.
Ericka's better off without either of their nonsense. I am disliking Van more, but Jacob is not doing much to win me over.
I’d like to just take a moment and to focus on this Brilliant Minds scene. Well one particular part of this scene. Why, why, does WOLF looked surprised after the kiss when my dude YOU kissed HIM. It’s adorable tho ngl. Oliver “Oh hey we kissed, I kissed you, I’m as shocked as you are” Wolf.
I s2g if I hear anyone bitching when shit stops coming out bc of these strikes I'm gonna start stabbing. This is insane and I hope they keep striking until the studios are so desperate they're ready to give them everything they ask.
Honestly, I might bitch when stuff doesn't come out. Because if the studios would pay fairly and not force the creatives, whose work I enjoy and want more of, to stop work to gain a baseline level of respect for creating something people want to buy this wouldn't be happening. Bitch about the strikes all you as long as you're clear it's the studios that are preventing anything coming out.
So yeah, I might complain about how the AMPTP hasn't rolled over and let them have their way. It's not the actors who are to blame for the strike, just as it's not the studios responsible for the work you love.
History cares about the artists not their patrons. Who paid for Leonardo's paints? Who cares? They didn't produce the Mona Lisa.
Veronica Mars: Kinda Spoilery - Assuming Anyone Remains Unspoiled - Why I’m Not Jazzed About The S5 Pitch
Apologies for the fact this goes weirdly stream of consciousness towards the end.
Unpopular opinion here but, Veronica isn’t that great a detective. The majority of her “skill” comes from her knowledge and relationships in Neptune. Taking her out of that setting invalidates her strengths as an investigator which is why I find it bizarre that this is the direction RT has chosen to go moving forward.
This is not to say that Veronica is bad at what she does, but she isn’t preternaturally gifted in the way that RT seems to want the audience to believe that she is. Ultimately my interest in a solely Veronica focused S5 is fairly minor due to the following
1. Veronica rarely solves a case without her extensive support network - this could be defending an acquaintance, being able to impersonate the Sheriff’s Desk Clerk, knowing that the Sheriff has a weakness for a local anchor, sweet-talking Cliff, leveraging her relationship with Leo/ Sacks, having Mac hack something. Throughout the series Veronica has never solved a case alone and multiple cases she’s only pursued because of previously known information - consider her vehemence in season 4 that BIg Dick only made sense as the initial bomber, Maddie sees Cassidy’s crimes as a potential lead, but Veronica dismisses them due to her knowledge of what happened, how, and just generally the fact that Big Dick was too absent a parent for his son’s crimes to be of value in an assessment of his character.
2. Veronica was apparently not tempted to solve cases while at Stanford/ Columbia - the fact she went investigative cold turkey after the series is an indication that she’s not the born detective RT wants her to be. If the original ending of the series was enough to put her off, would Logan’s death really encourage her.
3. Veronica has never really been an underdog - when was Veronica an underdog, beyond her existence at the wrong end of institutional corruption based on the willingness to serve the rich. Veronica has always existed as the person who will succeed despite all odds, because she has the skills and knowledge to do so. “Veronica Mars is smarter than me” where me is anyone who’s not Veronica, how is she an underdog when the only real losses she’s had in the series are: that time her hubris cost her dad the election, and that time her husband got nonsensically blown up.
There are other reasons I’m not into the story, including why would I want to support a project that has such disdain for any actor other than the one in the title role, and a writer who struggled to include a character in the main mystery then killed them off in the last 10 minutes? RT could have made Logan’s death part of the mystery - consider Logan got injured either in Ep 3′s blast or helping rescue someone, he asks Veronica to marry him for the solely practical reason of being able to make medical decision over Trina. Veronica pays it all little mind and more or less blows off the call to make the decision for emergency surgery because she can talk to him later when it’s over, Logan dies of complications and Veronica learns that, to quote Robert Smith, “until later, doesn’t always come”. Ultimately, they’ve tried this before with Thouand Dollar Tan Line, there were complaints about lack of Logan and sudddenly Mr. Kiss and Tell is delayed and comes out with a significant amout of Logan. To be honest, I’m tired of it, RT seems to lack the courage of his convictions, hence to off-screen potentially reversible death. I don’t want another season of VM, because the whole thing has lost its appeal, in particlar due to what is coming out about how JD was treated, that more than anything is putting me off the whole thing.
On the off-chance it does get renewed I might watch the series, but I’ve lost the taste for it I once had. The magic is gone, who cares?
FInally, if anyone has read this far and is still holding out hope that the “after the dust settles” tweets mean something remember they mean this “once you’ve stopped whining you’ll see this is the way forward and you’re living in denial”. RT wants to write what he wants to write and that’s his prerogative, it’s mine to say I don’t want to see that and you got where you were going through bad writing.
I Watched This Because I Hate Myself: Divorce Invitation
Do you know what is a horrible premise for a movie? A guy falls for a girl and marries her despite her family’s concerns only to want a divorce because he meets some girl who didn’t go to prom with him. That is the exact premise of Divorce Invitation and somehow it manages to be even worse than it sounds.
Her grandparents want Dylan to marry a Jewish boy, they even have one in mind named Jeremy, and he is more Jewish than her Jewish grandparents, who are very Jewish. There is also a hugely embarrassing joke about how Mike's surname is Christian which goes on much longer than necessary as Jeremy pretends his surname is Jew. It made me want to stab myself in the eye, so, y'know, it was one of the better bits.
Because Jeremy is insufferable and the grandparents are attempting to sell Dylan off to him because reasons (seriously don't understand why they're pushing it so hard). So Mike loses his shit and shouts about how he's dating Dylan, which of course scandalises the grandparents on account of his not being Jewish. I swear this isn't the part that makes the least sense, but it is the part that is the most redundant, it's sole purpose is to get Mike to convert, which could've just been part of his storyline.
Anyway he does the world's quickest conversion to Judaism by having a Bris - obviously this is shown to be the height of sacrifice because clearly it is. He then turns up at the restaurant looking and talking like a stereotype and fully accepted by the grandparents, who, I forgot to add, had fired him when he confessed he was dating Dylan so y'know they're clearly awesome people.
Anyway, the important thing is they agree to the marriage. Dylan and Mike begin preparing for the wedding and Dylan gives Mike a pre-nuptual agreement to sign. Mike finds the pre-nup hilarious and jokes about how they're like celebrities. His friend Scott who serves little purpose in the plot suggests he have a lawyer look over the thick legal document before signing it and even offers to hook him up with one for free. Mike refuses because reasons. Mike is a fucking moron, everyone who knows him can do better.
Having signed the pre-nup and married Dylan Mike decides to have a business idea. He thinks that they should franchise the grandparents' restaurant, I wasn't paying a lot of attention but I think this is possible because it's Jewish cuisine. Anywho they get agreement and he, Scott and some other dude played by that guy who was really annoying as Eli on Stargate Universe go to pitch for finance somewhere.
The pitch goes well but the CEO isn't available to sign off so they ask for them to hold off on pitching elsewhere for two weeks while she goes to play golf. This sounds like a pile of bollocks and no way to do business unless you are looking to shaft or be shafted. By a happy coincidence she passes through the lobby at that moment and though she refuses to meet with them Mike overhears where she's going to be.
Because, as I mentioned, Mike is a fucking moron he decides this is some secret test of their commitment and she wants them to follow her and pitch. Because Mike's friends are smarter than Mike they tell him he's a fucking moron (in network television friendly language of course). However, Dylan is stupid in love with him so funds his fools errand with their new credit card.
When Mike gets out there he finds out the CEO is his former high school girlfriend and she is a super-rich divorcee. Sadly she's not very good at acting and is so heavily made up that she looks incredibly plastic against the far more natural look sported by Dylan. Obviously Mike's single-brain-celled head is turned and he spends a few days reminiscing, doing shots and getting way too close to her.
He returns home where he explains what he discovered. His not stupid friends point out he should leave well enough alone and, more importantly, they have found alternative revenue streams. But because Mike is a fucking moron he is determined to be fucking moronic about everything. So he disregards everything they say and barrels forward with getting financing from Alex.
Scott, being way more sensible points out that she dumped him on prom night and even in the flashback was being smarter than Mike. mike goes to Alex's house where he meets her old bodyguard/ driver and finds out she didn't dump him her dad wouldn't let her go to prom with him. They were supposed to talk business but it turns out it's Alex's birthday so they hang in the pool drinking cocktails and then watch Superman. At some point they bone and he starts lying to Dylan about where he is and sexing up Alex.
Alex gives an ultimatum stating that she has to leave by Christmas so Mike needs to leave Dylan or not ASAP. He decides Alex is his soulmate because decisions made in High School are superawesome. He tells Dylan he wants a divorce in an email because manpain and he's a fucking moron.
He meets Dylan at the restaurant where her grandparents announce that she's pregnant. He pretends to be excited and then goes and screws Alex. He gets home late, lies to Dylan and she reveals she got the email and will divorce him on a cold day in hell.
Mike takes the pre-nup to Scott's lawyer friend (at fucking last) who is Paul from Spin City. He laughs hysterically at MIke and calls them both fucking morons for not bringing it to him earlier. It turns out that he can make Dylan divorce him if he can get 90% of their wedding guests back to their wedding venue wearing their wedding clothes and then have a party.
He and Alex go about setting this up while Dylan goes to her grandparents and talks about how she loves him and is worried about how their child will be raised. We learn Dylan's dad ran off and stayed away even after her mother's death. While the grandfather (who's Eliot Gould and Eliot you are better than this) had been obstructive at this point he gives Mike the list of guests so he can get everyone to come.
The next sequence is fucking weird even by the standards set in this movie. He travels around handing out "Divorce Invitations" like it's a game while the audience watches how painfully awful this is for Dylan. Seriously, they made a mistake hiring someone who can act for the role, because Jamie Lynn Siegler does her best to break your heart as a pregnant woman going through a divorce from a man she is painfully in love with.
The day of the divorce dawns and Dylan puts on her wedding dress, which has had to be let out for her pregnant belly. Paul from Spin City reiterates the plot so far and Dylan signs the papers. Then Mike gets up to explain why he wants the divorce and explains that at first he thought the whole divorce/wedding recreation thing was really mean. Except they both had to do it, at which point he realised it was smart because everything he's done reminded him of how it felt to marry her and actually fuck you Alex I'm not getting divorced.
Rather than call him a cunt and punch his teeth down his throat Dylan is happy to reunite. Alex happily lets them go because she probably wasn't that arsed anyway. No-one tells Mike he could have avoided all this by not being a dick. Then they have a party and there is a "hilarious" credits sequence in which various wedding pictures are taken based on Scott's really "funny" comments.
TL; DR: This movie is a terrible idea badly executed which has somehow conned some not bad actors into being in it. It makes precisely no sense and requires a synopsis that makes Dylan look bad to not sound horrible - yet it still sound pretty awful. Overall it's a story of manpain and male privelege which suggests women should be happy if their cheating spouse decides that actually they do like you after all. Dylan should have let him go, because, and I'm not sure if I've mentioned this, Mike's a fucking moron.
