Yet another new study debunked the basis for the anti-trans sports bans. It was never about sports but for creating legal avenues for exclusion and abjection. This is one of the largest analyses ever conducted, involving 52 studies and 6,485 trans people. Read the study here.
post so nice had to reblog it twice and force it down everyone's throats
At minimum about 4.5 thousand people liked this without reblogging it.
We gotta fix that.
Progress.
Onwards!
I can't access the full paper, but their conclusion is right there in the abstract:
While transgender women exhibited higher lean mass than cisgender women, their physical fitness was comparable. Current evidence is mostly low certainty and has heterogenous quality but does not support theories of inherent athletic advantages for transgender women over cisgender.
Hell yeah, support trans women in sports!!
Shout out to my mom who explains my transition as "Having a daughterpillar turn into a Boyterfly". It doesn't erase the fact I was an adorable little girl, and also affirms my gender now. I love my mother.
I will be sharing this with my mother, incredible.
✦ PROJECT HAIL MARY by andy weir —in the style of a 70s sci-fi novel.
Dude these fuck so hard. These are so sick. I would eat them they are so cool
roald dahl was antisemitic and misogynistic. george orwell was openly homophobic. edgar allan poe married his 13 year old cousin. dr seuss cheated on his wife (and was racist as well as antisemitic!). hp lovecraft was racist as fuck. anyways they’re fucking dead it’s not like you’re enabling their behaviors in the afterlife or something. then again I think they bleed into the books so uh keep an eye out for that
the difference between these old white guys and jk rowling is that the former group is all dead. jk rowling is alive and using your money to oppress trans people
Why I can't get some people to understand this is beyond me. I fucking loved Harry Potter but the number of people that I've told to not give any more money to J.K. Rowling and they're just like "but I wanna see the new show!" Pisses me off so much. Like, if you care about me and my rights as a human person, STOP FUCKING GIVING HER MONEY.
I like lovecraft and his horror, I acknowledge he was ridiculously racist, and I can still read one of his books, because BUYING ONE DOESN'T SUPPORT THE OPPRESION OF OTHERS. ffs
Do you think people in the past realized that their shit was old as fuck?
I mean, we know our shit will, one day, become old as fuck, so I think perhaps yes.
the thing too is that. I've heard, when the book came out, the big twist was the alien. right? because it was from the guy that wrote the martian, a notoriously hard sci fi book, so this was just another notoriously hard sci fi book and oh my god what the fuck there's ALIENS in here?!
but to me, who decided to watch the movie 1) because it was getting stellar reviews, and 2) Because There Was An Alien, the twist for me was that grace didn't want to be there. the big twist of the film was that grace was a coward and was forced onto this mission against his will. not to mention the taumoeba leak, but. that was it. that was the thing that had be gasping in the theater. the big surprise. not that aliens were involved in a hard sci fi product, but that the main character, the guy we were rooting for, the man whose perspective we had been in for hours, was drugged and shot into space on a suicide mission to save the fucking planet and he didn't want to go. he ran. and to learn later on that in the book, he was given amnesia on purpose? because he threatened, Bluffed, that he would sabotage the mission once he woke up? I mean. when will we ever get a protagonist like ryland grace in a blockbuster movie again.
As someone who was initially a book guy (who saw the movie thrice in theatres), that extremely was the big twist the whole time. In recommending the book, I may or may not have mentioned Rocky, depending on how much the person I was talking to felt about spoilers. But I NEVER talked about the "He was forced to be here" part, because THAT was always the big twist.
And The Martian was my favourite book before Project Hail Mary, and I even read his far less popular book Artemis. The synopsis alludes to there being a second alien on top of basically telling the reader about the first one. Astrophage is an alien, and if you pretend that when you have one alien, you can't have another one, you're lying to yourself. Weir did Rocky in the most Weir way possible. I think anyone who read the synopsis and read the book in ernest wouldn't think that the alien is the twist. I DO THINK, however, that readers knew this was a twist, and out of respect for those who didn't know the story in advance, they managed to largely keep the twist a secret.
As a reader-to-movie-watcher, I'm glad you didn't know about the real twist in advance.
hey can everyone tell me your favourite bird. preferably in the replies or a reblog pls and thank u <3
the list so far.. in addition to any suggestions i also just scrolled through the wikipedia list of birds and added any names that caught my eye lol [and some are ofc just off the top of my head]
My local dove, the white-winged dove, harasses me with his noises and easily identifiable wings in the spring and summer, and yet I love him. I also love the Stellar's Jay. Very pretty.

I enjoy experiencing surgery for the same reason I enjoy plane travel: I am not responsible for anything. As soon as I have stepped in and professionals have taken charge, I am in the hands of fate and my fate is in their hands. I have become cargo, the doer of jack shit. I am getting a good grade at being a faultless meat slab, something that is both normal to want, and possible to achieve.
Ya gotta love getting to let someone else do all the work for you. Like jesus take the wheel but jesus is a trained doctor.

Randomly remembered seeing this random old black and white photo from like the 50s, pretty sure it was from Sweden. A picture from a morgue, of a tall blond man in some kind of an uniform approaching another man standing beside an opened coffin, clutching something to his chest while looking at the approaching man with a look of wary insult on his face. The caption explained that this was an incident of a police officer stopping a man from putting a bottle of beer in his father's coffin (his own father, not the cop's father) because for some reason doing that was against Sweden's burial laws.
I don't remember the details but I recall how the guy had the looks of a rough life written all over him, ragged clothes in contrast to the police officer's pristine uniform - though obscured by motion blur as he was rapidly approaching with hateful intent - and the much finer burial clothes of the deceased. A small, skinny man with black hair, holding onto the bottle that's about to be confiscated like it's something precious to him.
I felt like something wasn't adding up and went to the comments to see if there was additional context that was missing from all this, and there was: The son and the father were Romani, and at least at the time it was still very much a tradition in Swedish Romani culture to bury the dead with little gifts - not necessarily extravagant or expensive, but things that the lost loved one would have liked.
This wasn't about a mourning son being stopped from playfully paying his respects in a way that someone else thought indignified. This was about a man being prohibited from performing his own peoples' funeral rites.
Had to go find the photo, it's indeed Swedish. Taken by Åke Borglund and photo of the year 1958, apparently.

Holy fuck you found it.
I misremembered, it wasn't a morgue, those are empty church pews.
Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it and oh boy are we repeatin' it
