Honestly, Father Thomas has many, many nights of this sort of thought going through his head, and even more spent wondering if perhaps Victor Frankenstein himself is possessed or consorting with demons (it would all be so much easier for Father Thomas if he was, but alas), but Adam is just... a guy. Who came into this world in an extraordinarily horrific way for everyone involved, but through no fault of his own, but, just- what is he supposed to do?!?
He eventually settles on baptism because he literally can't think of anything else to do with the situation, and he... thinks it should work? Maybe? His Nonna once told him that trolls will trade their children with human ones in order to get them an education, and that baptizing the traded child meant the trolls couldn't take it back, maybe the same concept applies here just in case Adam really is an Abomination from the Pit? And it doesn't seem to have any negative effects that any of those who witness it can see, so at least God doesn't seem to have been upset over all this enough to smite anyone, which is probably a good sign...?
The only real hiccup in the baptismal process actually is in regards to Adam's surname, or lack thereof. Because he may not technically be illegitimate, due to not being the child of an unwedded or at least not-wedded-to-his-father woman, but he's also not a legitimate, recognized son of the Frankenstein family, either, since, you know. Victor's an unfit father who abandoned his child at birth. And Adam doesn't really want to carry his father's surname, because of the aforementioned reasons among others, but he also doesn't want to not be connected to him, because that's the only family he technically has and he doesn't want his creator to be able to just sweep him under the rug, so to speak...
Gytha: What about 'Victorson'?
Adam: (considering expression)
Father Thomas: (just can't be bothered to put up any sort of resistance about appropriateness at this point, because what if they actually make him defend his position? he doesn't want to do that. he's tired.)
@mobgabriel imagine father thomas reading some old king arthur stories where merlin is said to be a spawn of satan who got baptized when he was born and this is why he is magic and this is where the idea of baptizing adam comes from XD
XD Absolutely delightful alternative reason for why Father Thomas decided to go the baptism route, love it! <3
@grammar-beane #but do they tell the vatican??#and if yes #does anyone actually do anything or do they assume its some weird prank being pulled on them
He does indeed consider that for a brief time, followed by a brief consideration of what might happen if they doen't believe him, also followed by a much longer consideration of what might happen if they do believe him and send someone over. What if they encounter Gytha? What if they ask about the communion wine? What if they decide Adam's the problem? Sure, Adam's a problem, but he's not the problem, and, strictly speaking, while he's a fully grown and sapient man, he's also kinda still and innocent child who doesn't deserve any of this! In fact, none of them deserve any of this (except Victor), especially not Father Thomas! Yet here Father Thomas is, having to deal with it anyway-!!!
After a week or so's agonizing, he finally comes to the decision to just super casually not tell anyone back at the pope house anything, and if anyone comes to do a just regular stop-by-and-see-how-it's-going visit, he's just going to pray really hard that they don't run into Adam or Gytha and, should God decide that Father Thomas is his strongest soldier and thus up to his greatest challenges, he's going to use 'the sanctity of the confessional chamber' as his excuse.
@thelibrarian1895 so, just tossing this out there, if adam and gytha are going to be together then adam could be a stay at home spouse, true, or, and stay with me here, adam might perhaps be taken under father thomas's wing, let's say that father thomas is protestant, adam might get a proper education, adam might become the new priest of the parish when father thomas retires, victor frankenstein will have to go to church and see his creation give sermons, and gytha gets all the good tea as the priest's spouse
...that's absolutely adorable, and I can see it as a totally viable way for things to turn out! Personally, I rather see this Adam as being a very hands-on fellow who wants to learn and ends up something of the village's jack-of-all-trades as a result. It lets him go around and see people and be directly helpful, and still have all the good tea to bring home to Gytha. It'd also be fun to see Elizabeth, William, and Victor's parents put their feet down that Adam is a direct member of the family and he's going to be raised to be a proper gentleman, dash it!
I think which one works best mostly boils down to which you, personally, think Adam would look best in: a cassock, handyman clothes, or a suit.
