Reports coming in from ICE facilities visited by congressional representatives. (Heard on Minnesota Public Radio this morning and from other sources.)
Detainees are:
denied blankets in very cold conditions
refused food and water
refused bathroom and shower access
unable to access needed medications
There was an account of two parents abducted by ICE thugs, leaving their 7 year old daughter behind. The daughter is apparently being cared for by a neighbor, but the mom was sobbing and in hysterics, understandably.
We know already know what these ICE dirtbags and their depraved leadership in Washington are made of - they won't hesitate to tear children from their parents in their white Christian nationalist frenzy to make the US ethnically "pure" again.
When MAGA agrees with the sentiment that the 1950s were a high point in the US, this is in part what they mean: people of color were a minority of the population and "knew their place." The most socially ineducable and morally unreconstructed holdovers from past generations of American racial apartheid are now having one of their deepest wishes fulfilled in the Trump administration.
Are we going to be a country that prioritizes human well-being, dignity and basic rights for everyone regardless of documentation status, or one that embraces vicious and dehumanizing impulses as policy?
Are there going to be any consequences for this form of MAGA thuggery and dehumanization?
How do we correct the moral degradation of that part of society that sees nothing wrong?
The enshittification of labor
I'm on a tour with my new book, the international bestseller Enshittification: catch me next in Burbank, Lisbon, Cardiff, London and Oxford! Full schedule here.
While I formulated the idea of enshittification to refer to digital platforms and their specific technical characteristics, economics and history, I am very excited to see other theorists extend the idea of enshittification beyond tech and into wider policy realms.
There's an easy, loose way to do this, which is using "enshittification" to refer to "things generally getting worse." To be clear, I am fine with this:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/10/14/pearl-clutching/#this-toilet-has-no-central-nervous-system
But there's a much more exciting way to broaden "enshittification," which starts with the foundation of the theory: that the things we rely on go bad when the system stops punishing this kind of deliberate degradation and starts rewarding it. In other words, the foundation of enshittification is the enshittogenic policy environment:
https://pluralistic.net/2025/09/10/say-their-names/#object-permanence
That's where Pavlina Tcherneva comes in. Tcherneva is an economist whose work focuses on the power of a "job guarantee," which is exactly what it sounds like: a guarantee from the government to employ anyone who wants a job, by either finding or creating a job that a) suits that person's talents and abilities and b) does something useful and good. If this sounds like a crazy pipe-dream to you, let me remind you that American had a job guarantee and it was wildly successful, and created (among other things), the system of national parks, a true jewel in America's crown:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/10/23/foxconned/#ccc
Tcherneva's latest paper is "The Death of the Social Contract and the Enshittification of Jobs," in which she draws a series of careful and compelling parallels between my work on enshittification and today's employment crisis, showing how a job guarantee is the ultimate disenshittifier of work:
https://www.levyinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/wp_1100.pdf
Tcherneva starts by proposing a simplified model of enshittification, mapping my three stages onto three of her own:
Bait: Lure in users with a great, often subsidized, service.
Trap: Use that captive audience to attract businesses (sellers, creators, advertisers).
Switch: Exploit those groups by degrading the experience for everyone to extract maximum profit.
How do these map onto the current labor market and economy? For Tcherneva, the "bait" stage was "welfare state capitalism," which was "shaped by post–Great Depression government reforms and lasted through the 70s." This was the era in which the chaos of the Great Depression gave rise to fiscal and monetary policy that promoted macroeconomic stability. It was the era of economic safety nets and mass-scale federal investment in American businesses, through the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, a federal entity that expanded into directly funding large companies during WWII. After the war, the US Treasury continued to play a direct role in finance, through procurement, infrastructure spending and provision of social services.
As Tcherneva writes, this is widely considered the "Golden Age" of the US economy, a period of sustained growth and rising standard of living (she also points out that these benefits were very unevenly distributed, thanks to compromises made with southern white nationalists that exempted farm labor, and a pervasive climate of misogyny that carved out home work).
The welfare state capitalism stage was celebrated not merely for the benefits that it brought, but also for the system it supplanted. Before welfare state capitalism, we had 19th century "banker capitalism," in which cartels and trusts controlled every aspect of our lives and gave rise to a string of spectacular economic bubbles and busts. Before that, we had the "industrial capitalism" of the Industrial Revolution, where large corporations seized power. Before that, it was "merchant capitalism," and before that, feudalism – where workers were bound to a lord's land, unable to escape the economic and geographic destiny assigned to them at birth.
So welfare state capitalism was a welcome evolution, at least for the workers who got to reap its benefits. But welfare state capitalism was short-lived. To understand what came next, Tcherneva cites Hyman Minsky (whose "theory of capitalist development" provides this epochal nomenclature for the various stages of capitalism over the centuries).
Minsky calls the capitalism that supplanted welfare state capitalism "money manager capitalism," the system that reigned from the Reagan revolution until the Great Financial Crisis of 2008. This was an era of "deregulation, eroding worker power, rapid increase in inequality, and a rise of the money manager class." It's the period of financialization, which favored the creation of gigantic conglomerates that wrapped banking services (loans, credit cards, etc) around their core offerings, from GE to Amazon.
This is such a good read. So often we are told that companies invested in their employees and the shit state of the labor market today is because those employees had no "loyalty" to their companies, so moved for better jobs, and the poor companies just had no choice but to *gestures.*
Like almost every other USian narrative, it's completely backwards and upside down.
Elephants and Windmills
✍️ Author’s Note
This reflection was written on the eve of the Dutch elections, when the elephant of populism and the windmills of tradition clash in the national debate. I write reluctantly as a voter, but with conviction as a democrat. Our challenge is not migration itself, but how fear and resentment reshape the very character of the Netherlands.
"Tolerance is the glory of the Dutch nation — but intolerance, once normalized, becomes its undoing." — Adapted from Spinoza’s legacy of tolerance
In this election season, the Dutch political landscape is dominated by an elephant — Geert Wilders and his PVV. Once seen as fringe, his party has become the voice of national populism. Built on resentment and exclusion, his rhetoric offers scapegoats instead of solutions: foreigners, the European Union, Islam. Like Le Pen, Farage, and Orbán, Wilders doesn’t just attack policy. He undermines the institutions that protect our freedoms.
Yet the so-called “asylum crisis” he feeds on is a misnomer. As Peter Scholten and Fons Meijer argue, the Netherlands faces a reception crisis, not an asylum one. Shortages of staff and housing, combined with years of government neglect, have created bottlenecks. The problem is structural, but politics has turned it into an obsession with migration.
This obsession is the elephant in the room — or rather, the elephant in the china closet, trampling Dutch tolerance and pragmatism. And what of the windmills, those enduring symbols of adaptation and resilience? They are battered, spinning now to the tune of populism rather than purpose.
The VVD, under Dilan Yeşilgöz, bears heavy responsibility. By normalizing Wilders as a governing partner, it broke with decades of liberal democratic restraint. What was once unthinkable — treating a xenophobic one-man party as legitimate — has become reality. The electorate has noticed, and the VVD has lost its moral centre.
Even D66, once the voice of principled liberalism, now bends in the wind. It speaks of reconsidering the Refugee Convention, of processing asylum claims at Europe’s borders, even of replacing European symbols with Dutch flags. Rob Jetten still invokes democracy, rule of law, and a green economy — but the tone has shifted. Something vital has been lost.
Meanwhile, the left tries to hold the line. GroenLinks-PvdA and parts of D66 advocate humane asylum policies: faster procedures, small-scale reception, and European cooperation. Yet their voices are drowned out by the thunder of elephants.
For voters like myself, the choice is uneasy. In the general interest, I will vote D66 — not out of enthusiasm, but because it still stands closer to the liberal democratic tradition that must be defended, however compromised.
The Netherlands has always known how to live with wind and water. Windmills were built to turn storms into energy. But elephants cannot be turned; they can only be confronted. The danger we face today is not uncontrolled migration, but the normalization of exclusion and the erosion of tolerance.
The question is simple: will we remain a nation of windmills — pragmatic, open, adaptable — or will we let elephants trample our democracy?
📌Blog Excerpt
Elephants and Windmills explores the uneasy balance of Dutch politics in an age of populism. Geert Wilders and the PVV have turned migration into the “elephant in the room,” while traditional values of pragmatism and tolerance — symbolized by windmills — struggle to withstand the storm. A reflection on obsession, fear, and the fragile fabric of democracy.

AI Psychosis and the implications of its existence
Actually as shitty as the existence of AI psychosis is, the implications of it are FUCKING MIND-BOGGLING in actually a really revolutionary way.
("WTF are you talking about?" / "What do we currently know about AI psychosis?": x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x)
People experiencing "ChatGPT psychosis" are being involuntarily committed to mental hospitals and jailed following AI mental health crises.
Paywall free, via Futurism, June 28, 2025
Like, as someone who works professionally editing mental health books, the existence of AI psychosis almost certainly completely upends our understandings of how mental health disorders work. And their causes.
There's a non-zero chance the discovery/existence of AI psychosis is like. going to be/lead to more or less the mental health equivalent of inventing germ theory.
Like, we went from only sort of beginning to suspect to having actual, literal, indisputable proof that you can go from not having a psychotic disorder to having a psychotic disorder literally just from talking too much to a very aggrandizing source and/or echo chamber
THAT SEVERELY UPENDS OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE DEVELOPMENT AND ORIGINS OF MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS
**Note: I am using "psychotic" and "psychotic disorders" in their technical definition here, which is simply "involves experiencing breaks from reality." Because, contrary to all the stigma and misinformation, that's the literal/actual definition (x, x, x)
And like, obviously, in at least many cases, there would be/often are genetic, environmental, or trauma factors that are putting their thumbs on the scale there. But we know for a fact that a number of people who have developed AI psychosis do not have a previous record of mental health issues.
But the tipping factor for at least dozens of people, we now know for a fact, was talking to an AI chatbot. And we have a complete record of what was said for almost every single one of those cases, because, among other things, OpenAI / ChatGPT is now LEGALLY REQUIRED to preserve ALL CHAT TRANSCRIPTS, even if users delete them, until the court says otherwise (x, x, x).
(Which will be, by the way, years, at a minimum - that may have started with a copyright lawsuit, but there will be so many other AI lawsuits and investigations, including about AI psychosis, in the EU if not the US - this will go on for a while)
Anyway, yeah, good news in the long term for the understanding and treatment of mental health disorders
In the short term, seriously, please don't use chatbots for at least another couple of years, as a safety precaution
At least until they've sorted this shit out and (HOPEFULLY) figured out how to make this shit stop happening (and then, hopefully, actually implemented those changes).
Just call it a basic safety precaution - especially if you have any sort of neurodivergence and/or any history or family history of hallucinations, delusions, schizophrenia / schizo-spectrum, psychotic spectrum disorders, etc.
All of this will, I strongly suspect, be incredibly validating to a great many trauma survivors, abuse survivors, cult survivors, and members of the mad community
And it will hopefully really transform our understanding of how to understand and treat mental health issues, and particularly psychotic disorders, in really, really profound and positive ways. Which would be great, bc we're pretty fucking shit at understanding and treating them right now!
I'm no psychologist/psychiatrist, but personally I think AI psychosis is in large part coming from environmental factors such as the collective trauma we've experienced as a society going through covid 19, the current political upheaval in the US and many other countries, and the isolation resulting from increased privatization and disappearing of third places. A lot of people who need/want mental health services just don't have the time, money, or energy to access them, and chatgpt provides a quick, cheap, and seemingly safe answer.
It's a perfect storm where late stage capitalism is profiting off of providing a "solution" to a problem it has caused and is continuing to cause. And that "solution" is causing more problems than it's actually solving.
Environmental factors, including but not limited to trauma are, indeed, things that are known to increase your likelihood of developing a psychotic disorder, so, yeah, that is indeed part of the picture.
What's radical here is the strong evidence that spending too much time in a certain type of sycophantic echo chamber can, by itself, tip the balance from "does not have a psychotic disorder" to "does have a psychotic disorder," particularly (or at least) when combined with other environmental factors such as isolation.
Scientists, psychologists, and psychiatrists writ large did not actually think it was possible for the balance to be tipped by, ultimately, having too many of the wrong kind of social interactions
(Or, well, "social interactions," since ChatGPT is not actually an entity and therefore cannot be socialized with - but something deliberately designed to really persuasively and convincingly mimic human interactions.)
Survivors and the mad community as a whole have been saying this for decades, of course, but psychology as a field was only just sort of kind of beginning to bother to listen
This also has major implications for how we understand, react, and respond to a lot of members of QAnon and other MAGA and far right conspiracy groups.
(Note: Just in case, to clarify, this is Not me saying you need to be nice to them or have sympathy for them. It is instead significant further evidence of something we have already often seen: that QAnon, MAGA, and other far right conspiracy groups operate like cults, not typical mainstream political movements. And thus, deradicalizing them is much more likely to be successful when using cult studies and deprogramming strategies, than when treating them as an opposing political movement to be persuaded. Because it's really, really hard to convince someone who is experiencing and reacting to a version of the world that is very, very, very different and detached from actual reality.)

“The police spend very little of their time dealing with violent criminals—indeed, police sociologists report that only about 10% of the average police officer’s time is devoted to criminal matters of any kind. Most of the remaining 90% is spent dealing with infractions of various administrative codes and regulations: all those rules about how and where one can eat, drink, smoke, sell, sit, walk, and drive. If two people punch each other, or even draw a knife on each other, police are unlikely to get involved. Drive down the street in a car without license plates, on the other hand, and the authorities will show up instantly, threatening all sorts of dire consequences if you don’t do exactly what they tell you. The police, then, are essentially just bureaucrats with weapons. Their main role in society is to bring the threat of physical force—even, death—into situations where it would never have been otherwise invoked, such as the enforcement of civic ordinances about the sale of untaxed cigarettes.”

The Digital Deluge of Deception
In the grand theater of geopolitical machinations, Russia has emerged as the virtuoso of disinformation, orchestrating a symphony of deceit that reverberates across the digital landscape. With the deftness of a seasoned illusionist, the Kremlin has weaponized social media platforms, transforming them into conduits of chaos aimed squarely at the heart of Western democracies. This is not a mere skirmish of narratives; it is an all-out assault on truth itself.
The Art of Disinformation Warfare
Russia’s stratagem is as insidious as it is ingenious. By exploiting the boundless reach of social media, they have unleashed a torrent of falsehoods, half-truths, and outright fabrications designed to sow discord and undermine the very fabric of societal cohesion. This is not a new tactic; it is a modern iteration of age-old propaganda, now turbocharged by the virality of the internet. The Kremlin’s operatives, cloaked in the anonymity of cyberspace, craft narratives that are as alluring as they are mendacious, preying on the cognitive biases of unsuspecting netizens.
The Imperative of Unyielding Journalism
In this maelstrom of misinformation, the role of true journalism has never been more critical. It is the bulwark against the tide of deceit, the lighthouse guiding the ship of public discourse through the fog of falsehoods. Journalists who dare to call out lies and half-truths are the sentinels of democracy, armed not with swords but with facts, wielding the pen as a weapon of mass enlightenment. Their mission is not merely to report but to illuminate, to dissect the cacophony of claims and counterclaims with the scalpel of scrutiny.
Pre-Bunking the Naysayers
Critics may scoff at the notion of a disinformation campaign, dismissing it as paranoia or hyperbole. Yet, the evidence is irrefutable. From the manipulation of electoral processes to the fomenting of social unrest, the fingerprints of Russian interference are indelibly etched upon the annals of recent history. To deny this is to bury one’s head in the sand, oblivious to the storm that rages above.
A Call to Intellectual Arms
What, then, is to be done in the face of such an onslaught? The answer lies in vigilance and veracity. Citizens must cultivate a discerning eye, questioning the provenance of information and seeking out reputable sources. Social media platforms must bolster their defenses, deploying algorithms not to amplify outrage but to elevate accuracy. And journalists must continue to shine a light into the darkest corners of the digital domain, undeterred by the specter of censorship or reprisal.
Conclusion: The Unyielding Pursuit of Truth
In the end, the battle against disinformation is not merely a struggle for factual accuracy; it is a fight for the soul of democracy itself. As Russia continues its informational onslaught, the Western world must stand resolute, armed with the twin shields of skepticism and integrity. Only through the unyielding pursuit of truth can we hope to preserve the sanctity of our shared reality, ensuring that the light of knowledge triumphs over the shadow of deceit.

Show some respect, people.
THANK YOU
The story of Balto is interesting. He led a team of sled dogs across the Alaskan wilderness in the dead of winter with diphtheria antitoxins to stop an outbreak in Nenana Alaska. Diphtheria is a deadly infectious disease that could wipe out a third of a town’s population. It is mostly unknown to the public today because of vaccines. Balto’s body is preserved in the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
He’s a big hero of mine!
Let’s not forget Togo! Who, at 12 years old during the serum run, lead his team 200 miles through much more dangerous conditions during the first leg of the journey before Balto ran the last 55-mile stretch.
Togo and Balto didn’t bust their asses for dying children for you to turn around and not vaccinate your damn kids
The actual story is fascinating.
The town of Nome, situated in Western Alaska, was a relative hub for even smaller communities in the region, but in winter was utterly cut off from… nearly everywhere. The harbour iced over in winter, there were no roads connecting it anywhere else, the nearest railroad line was nearly 700 miles (1000+ kilometres) away in Nenana. Air travel was still new at the time and planes couldn’t handle the inclement winter weather.
In 1924, the community had a single doctor and a few nurses who served approximately 10 000 people, including large Eskimo populations in the area (the town itself had a population of roughly 1000 people - bear in mind how few children lived in this community when you see the casualty counts). He had realized his diphtheria vaccine stock was expired and had ordered more from mainland USA months earlier. When it failed to arrive on the final ship of the season, he was a little concerned, but diphtheria was fairly rare, and he figured he’d just restock in the spring.
Of all the rotten luck, January 1925 was when a diphtheria outbreak hit the region.
There was a scramble, in the mainland USA as well as Alaska, to find a way to get the vaccine to this town in the middle of winter. There were attempts to fly a vaccine supply over, but the planes were grounded by storms. This was part of the United States in the 1920s. There was no way to get there.
Except by sled dogs, running the vaccine from that train station in Nenana, 674 miles away. Over 1000 kilometres away, in the dead of winter in Alaska, by 20 mushers (mostly native Athabaskans) and 150 sled dogs running in relay, switching off at tiny villages and rest stations along the way. It was bitterly cold. As in, -85°F (-60°C) at the coldest. There were blizzards, hurricane force winds, and at some points visibility was so poor the men couldn’t see their dogs in front of them.
No man or beast should have been out in that. You freeze in seconds if you’re not moving. Multiple dogs died from being run so hard in such cold weather. Mushers grappled with hypothermia and frostbite. One needed hot water poured over his frozen hands because he was frozen to his sled. Another’s face was black with frostbite. Some strapped themselves up and lead their packs when their lead dogs collapsed.
This relay team traveled 674 miles in 5.5 days. Togo and his owner, Leonhard Seppala, did by far the longest and most dangerous run, travelling over 260 miles (about 420 kilometres) including the initial travel to his pickup spot. Gunnar Kaasen and his lead dog, Balto, did the final 53 miles (85 kilometres) into Nome, where they were greeted as heroes.
Prior to the vaccine arriving in Nome, 5-7 children officially died of diphtheria, with dozens of confirmed cases who may well have died without treatment - but it’s suspected the surrounding Indigenous communities were much harder hit, with numbers impossible to confirm.
When you think that this happened less than 100 years ago, how desperate this community was for a vaccine, how much these mushers risked and lost to get it to this town as fast as they possibly could…
I wonder what they’d think of people today.
(this is the Iditarod. this trek to deliver vaccines was so important, that we immortalized it the way we immortalized the marathon.)
