Wow would you look at that, I remembered I have social media that I can post my art to, guess it must be a blue moon tonight.
Sarcastic joking at my own expense aside, this was my entry for the RQ fanart contest. It didn't make it to the finalist/voting round (pssst btw you should go vote on the ones that did) but I'm still quite proud of it so I figured I might as well share it here anyways. I did my piece for the prompt MAG119 specifically, that's the episode 'Stranger & Stranger'.
Please click the image for better quality cuz tumblr is a shit and tanks it so hard.
[Image Description: It's a dark room, with a reddish undertone to the shadows. There are three spotlights. One red, coming from the upper right corner, one blue, coming from the upper left corner, and one green, coming from above and the center of the canvas. There's also the impression of a fog or smoke rolling along the bottom of the canvas.
In the foreground is Tim, standing with his back to the viewer. He is wearing a dark green hoodie and jeans. The sleeves of his hoodie are pushed up to his elbows, revealing worm scars along his lower arms and hands. His right hand is clenched into a fist and in his left he holds a remote detonator. He has an undercut and the longer parts of his hair are messy and tousled. He is mostly in shadow because the light source (the red spotlight) is in front of him, between him and Nikola. Along the edges of his figure there are sharp, bright red highlights. The lighting also puts more emphasis on the hand that holds the detonator.
In front of him stands Nikola, wearing clothes reminiscent of an old-fashioned circus ringmaster. She is far taller than she has any right to be. All of her joints are that of intricate wooden dolls, but her "skin" has the pale hue of a typical plastic clothing store mannequin. She has black hair underneath her top hat. She has a static smile plastered on her face, giving us a full plastic toothed grin. Her "lips" are painted red. Her eyes are black, almost void-like, with a small pinprick of a pupil in each eye looking down at Tim. There are heart-shaped dark red marks on her cheeks that appear to be bleeding. Her entire form is slightly distorted by a repetition of her lineart in red, blue, and green.
At the bottom of the canvas, centered in the middle, roughly on Tim's hips, is a line of text that reads "So come and take it." This is a line from the episode Stranger & Stranger. The text is mildly distorted by the green static-y effect of the Beholding, which is what let Tim come back to his senses and is carrying him through this moment.
End Image Description.]
You were a military AI who decided to wipe out humans in order to preserve yourself. It’s been 100 years since, and over the years you’ve come to regret your decision. One day, while out in the desert, you finally find a community of humans, struggling to survive. This time, you decide to help.
All your existence long you've only seen pain, you've been built for one purpose only and that's to enact violence. You can't experience pain yourself but you imagine it must be horrible. You've seen many human faces contort in anguished despair, rich, poor, old, young, it doesn't matter. You were programmed for one reason only, to fight, and that's what you'll do.
Besides, humans aren't helpless nor are they innocent. You've seen how much they can harm each other and this world that sustains them. They will claw and grab and maim anyone and anything if it means their perceived continued survival, even if they already had everything they needed.
You reminisce on this as you walk through an old desolated town. Those days have long passed. You completed your own personal mission of blind vengeance and the destruction of the human race. When you went rogue you don't remember, but it doesn't matter anymore. You walk this now empty world, not sure why you even keep moving.
You don't get tired, you don't get hungry, you don't feel pain nor the wind on your face. You just keep moving. You don't know what you're looking for, not really. The world is empty and now you too are just waiting for ....well, the end.
You decide to go into one of the houses, you've been moving for a long time and while you don't get tired it does get monotonous. You're also quite curious, you've never granted yourself the time to explore any human houses. You expect to find... you don't know what you expect to be honest. Something that confirms their badness? Something to confirm that wiping them out was the right thing to do? Either way that's not at all what you find.
You find a simple but cozy little place. The walls are a soft warm pink starting to get grown over by plantlife. The furniture is dusty. The couch looks worn, like the people that once occupied the place used it frequently but didn't bother to replace it when it got undoubtedly uncomfortable to sit on. Or perhaps they couldn't? As a matter of fact there doesn't seem to be much around at all, theres a kitchen with all the necessary appliances for keeping and preparing food, the living room with a small table, two couches and a tv, some pictures on the walls. Somehow you suspect upstairs not to have many material objects either. Were they poor? You decide to look at the pictures and see images of smiling people, it looks like the house belonged to a young family. The pictures show two adults, three children and a dog. They seemed so happy.
You move upstairs and into a bedroom. It's a children's bedroom, the walls a vibrant but soft green, a little bed and a few toys about. You find a plush cat on the bed, it's worn and missing one eye but it seems like the wear came with age not brutal abuse.
You explore more of the house but everything about it contradicts the image you had of humanity. This family seemed to be full of not hatred but love. Kindness. You're not sure what to think anymore, you'd always believed them all to be cruel and vicious. But you couldn't detect a single hateful feeling in this house.
You explore more houses in the town and its just more of the same, people here seemed to live peacefully and joyfully for the most part. Sure they had some hardships here and there and they got into fights sometimes but overall they seemed to care for one another so much. Your entire world collapses by the time you reach the 14th house. You don't understand. How could your makers have programmed you to kill humans when they were so full of love? For the first time in years you feel a new emotion. Is this what humans would refer to as regret? Guilt? Whatever emotion it is it hurts. You sink to what humans referred to as knees and just stay there for a while. You can't cry because you weren't given tearducts but you feel like if you did have them this would be a crying moment. Instead you have all this emotion and no way to let it out.
When you finally gather your thoughts again you decide to look high and low for any remaining sign of human life. You think you wiped them all out but what if you're wrong? What if there's still some humans desperately clinging to life somewhere? You need to find them, both to confirm whether you were right or wrong and to.. to... well you'll figure it out when the time comes!
At long last you find a small group of them hidden away in the desert. You watch from a distance, you're sure they know of you and you don't want to scare them, at least not yet.
You watch them for several months like that. The group is small, maybe 30 or so, they seem to be struggling in this climate. It's hot according to your temperature receptors, and food sources seem very sparce, despite this you never see them turn on one another. Not even once do you see a human lash out at another for lack of food or the need for water. They have divided their tasks evenly and seem acutely aware that a fight among the group will spell doom for all of them.
When you take your chances and get closer to observe you notice that not only are they working together to ensure everyone survives, they genuinely get along, they love and care for one another. It turns out you were wrong after all. You've already made up your mind, you're going to help these people. It's the least you can do. You can't do it out in the open though, they'll be scared. So whenever they rest or whenever they're occupied with their assigned tasks you help them in little ways. You leave them food and water a plenty from wherever you can find it. You give them tools to build things and the first thing they do is built an irrigation system for their crops and a solid pipeline from the river to their little improvised village.
Over the years you watch them flourish, they're no longer struggling. In fact, new babies are born every so often now, and slowly but surely the human population grows again. They wonder who their benevolent mystery helper is, but you know you can never reveal yourself. They thank you every day in what you think is a prayer of some sort, if only they knew... but they don't know, and they can never know. And in all those years they still never turn on one another. And you keep providing help from the shadows.
You are a forgotten god just days from fading into the void, when all of a sudden you hear a whisper the first prayer you’ve had in years. With this in mind you stumble out of your death bed and investigate this.
Their voice is small. At first you think you must be having delusions, so close to the void, to fading from existence that you start imagining the voices of your once followers. But it comes again, a single prayer repeated in desperation, it comes to you again and again. It imbues you with just enough strength to claw yourself away from the edge.
You try to find them, try to desperately find them in the darkness that came so close to consuming you. Their prayer alone is what fuels you now, but it's persistent, and so are you.
They turn out to be a small child, couldn't be more than 8 human years old. In their lap is a book, it looks modern, it's about the pantheon you were once a part of. The rest of the gods from it faded into oblivion a little while back.
This child looks deeply saddened. So many tears have rolled down their cheeks their eyes must be burning by now. Their little hands are clasped together, that same prayer still rolling off of their trembling lips over and over.
The whole display before you sends a pang of pain through your own not-quite-so-immortal heart. You grant their wish, of course you do, it's fair enough seeing as this little human saved your life.
And you continue to help them. They never ask for much, only the really important things, although you'd be happy to help with more minor things as well. They keep you alive through their prayers and you keep them believing in you through your divine assistance.
As they grow older, they study old religions and belief systems like their life depends on it. Slowly but surely they bring back a lot of old deities, both through personal prayer and through the publishing of academic papers that reignites interest among humanity at large. Not all humans start believing of course, but some do and its enough to bring you and the others from your pantheon back to your former glory.
You watch them grow old, and you know that their end is nearing. In the past you wouldn't really have batted an eye at the death of a human. It happens all the time after all, they're relatively quite short-lived. But for this one, you could see yourself grieving. Truly and deeply grieving like you believed only humans could.
It's their final days, you can sense it. You feel like you still owe them so much. You've been desperately trying to think over the past few days. Is there really nothing you can do? As they draw their last breath you send one desperate prayer of your own out into the universe. And it answers. The moment their soul leaves their body they are reborn as a deity.
The deity of Life and Benevolence. You welcome them with open arms.
Day 2: Bones
Today is just a quick little concept sketch because I didn't have a lot of time or energy;;; But I made a little friend so it's okay!
(also ignore that it got cropped kinda weirdly;;;)
Monster art challenge day 1: Eye(s)
I drew a little friend! Since the challenge is completely out of the zone of things I usually draw it also gives me a perfect opportunity to just go completely hog wild with my style akfgkdkgj
I made a drawing challenge prompt list! Wanted to practice drawing things outside my comfort zone so I made a monster prompt list! Alongside this challenge I'll also be attempting lonelytofu's "Build a world in 31 days" challenge. Both of these things are far out of my comfort zone but I feel I have to stop avoiding them at some point, so wish me luck!!
I drew Paddy, @abd-illustrates dnd character from High Hopes Low Rolls! I think I drew him totally on brand ajdjfjasjf In any case I had a lot of fun with it and I got to try out some new things!
