In other news: PUPPY!
I think weâll probably need to get a new therapist for next year. Our current one is really good but sheâs not a specialist in trauma, and doesnât know much about DID. I made a shortlist but I shudder to think of the fees these specialists charge judging by their office location. Probably the best case scenario is they do a mix of private and public work and thereâs a spot available with them in the public sector.
Once again John Oliver proves that you can do anything with money and lawyers
Oliver then proceeded to detail how with $50 and knowledge of the law he was able to successfully apply online to create a debt buying company named âCentral Asset Recovery Professionals,â or as Oliver put it, âCARPâ named after âa bottom-feeding fish.â
After setting up a rudimentary website for CARP, the satirical, but still real company was offered a $15 million package of medical debt for $60,000.
Oliver explained that the debt was out of statute, which means it is the kind of debt that a collector can only continue to collect, but not sue the debtor for.
Then, instead of chasing down the 9,000 debtors in the debt package as a normal collection agency would, Oliver decided to stage the largest one-time giveaway in television history and work with the nonprofit RIP Medical Debt to forgive the $15 million with no consequences for the debtors.
Okay but now I know what I want to do of I get rich?

One of the hardest feats to accomplish with regards to dog training is getting the owners to take any steps in behavior modification. It is infuriating.
For example:
Lady: my dogs won't stop eating poop. What do I do?
Me: there are supplements you can try to discourage it but the only surefire method is to have potty breaks on leash and clean up the poop immediately.
Lady: I'm not taking my dogs for a walk three times a day!
Me: you don't need to. Just take them into the yard on leash
Lady: I go outside with them anyways. I clean up the poop.
Me: have you tried putting the dogs inside while you clean up
Lady: I have to wait for all of them to go poop.
Me: stagger their outside time?
This is how most requests for help with behavior modification go. Person asks for help and then shoots down each and every idea off hand without even trying them.
"it's too hard and inconvenient for me to change what I do, I want you to change what the animal does. With no work on my part."
100% true. It is so frustrating. Most of dog training is teaching owners the skills they need to get the results they want. Most of what the owners want is for a magic wand to be waved for them to fix the problem. It tends to be the owners who want a dog as a social symbol, a dog as a living piece of furniture, or a dog as cuddle partner with no desire to teach them.
Personally, I get dogs because I love the training, the housebreaking, the problem solving, the partnership. It's me and the dog vs the world/the issue rather than me vs the dog with the issue. I don't understand getting a dog if you don't want to put work in.
This! I get a lot of:
Guy: Will this (headcollar) keep my dog from pulling?
Me: It will definitely help to keep him from pulling your arm off while training because he wonât have as much leverage, but many dogs do find them unpleasant if you donât introduce them slowly or can learn to pull anyway. Like any of the tools here (gestures to whole training tool aisle) it will help manage the problem while you train him to walk politely on leash. Would you like to learn how to teach your dog to walk on a loose leash?
Guy: What about a choke chain? Will that teach him not to pull? He wouldnât want to choke himself.
Me: Choke chains are a training tool that need much better timing than a headcollar. If you just let the dog choke himself, it could seriously injure him. We donât offer training using tools here, but you can learn how to train your dog to walk on a loose leash while using management like a front clip harness.
Guy: What about this (prong collar)? Would you say this would teach him?
Sir, a tool alone cannot guarantee your dog will loose leash walk. Iâve been training dogs for a decade, and that skill is a bitch. Itâs a hard skill because dogs walk so much faster than we do, and that is your FRIEND on the other end of the leash. Please, sir, there is no one-stop tool for loose leash walking or I would worship it. Sir...
it should be illegal to provide subtitles that donâtâŠâŠ. match the fucking dialogue. some shows on netflix (and probably many other places) think itâs okay to just leave out a bunch of words.
sometimes itâs words they donât consider important for some reason but absolutely do affect the meaning and tone. sometimes itâs swear words, which is even more insidious - disabled people donât need censorship wtf.
not only are you actively misrepresenting the dialog people have every right to assume is rendered word for word, itâs also incredibly distracting if you can hear or lipread whatâs actually being said.
i donât wanna call anybody out so iâm not replying to anyone in particular but it has been said in the tags that itâs understandable if itâs âfillerâ words when someone is talking fast or whatever and, no, itâs not acceptable.
thatâs a large proportion of what i was talking about. iâm watching US shameless on netflix rn and whoever subtitled this has decided that about a quarter of what the characters say are âfiller words.â the most recent example i can think of, a character is telling another off for reckless behavior and says they could have ended up â[some gruesome illness or injury i donât remember] and hooked up to an IV.â
the reason i remember the âand hooked up to an IVâ part and not the other part? âand hooked up to an IVâ was omitted from the captions, jarring me out of the story. this happens every few lines, and whatâs omitted is often colorful details like this or speech quirks or other things that give characters character. doing this to a script is like forcing all color films into sepia. you lose a lot, and it misrepresents the overall work.
so no, itâs not okay to omit âfillerâ words, because i donât fucking trust these people to decide on my behalf which parts of the script i should get access to and which are only available to abled people.
I donât know the details of how subtitling works mechanically but i have seen a post from someone knowledgeable debunking the idea that itâs ever actually necessary in practical terms to cut out âfillerâ words. from experience iâve seen them use multiple lines and leave the subs up longer.
anyway FUCK NO to abled people getting an opportunity to decide what parts of someone elseâs media disabled people get access to, no excuses
This, This, This, THIS.Â
I use subtitles to assist with auditory processing issues and some stuff on Netflix itâs so egregious that itâs unwatchable.
something Iâve noticed lately is the number of shows where a character is using AAVE but the subtitles for their dialogue are in SAE, which is fucked up on multiple levels..
I transcribe audio on a freelance basis sometimes, and to OPâs point about not knowing the mechanics of subtitling, itâs not that hard to leave in filler words. The service I freelance with has two options for transcription projects - standard and verbatim. Standard is for if you want the minutes of a meeting, or maybe if youâre dictating an interview, or if youâre doing anything that really doesnât rely on tone and you just need information conveyed.Â
Verbatim is for everything else. Not many people select the verbatim option, because it is more expensive and it takes a little longer, but when tone is important (like, in my opinion, all of fiction), you NEED verbatim. Thatâs every word, every um, every like, every stutter transcribed and put on a page. We donât get a lot of fictional audio like podcasts or TV show audio through my service, but I guarantee, whatever transcribing or captioning service they use, verbatim IS an option. And with a big networkâs budget, they should damn well shell out for it.

banish the idea that platonic love is a lesser form of love
if you go through life not investing in your friendships the same way you invest in romantic relationships, you will always be looking for love, feeling lonely, completely blind to the love all around you
friendship is not a lower level relationship. it is not a lesser form of love.

The World Health Organization is going to do what?!
Federal Government announced a $130 billion coronavirus wage subsidy for businesses to pay workers. Here are the key points:
The âJob Keeperâ payments are for businesses to subsidise wages up to $1,500 per employee to prevent people from losing their jobs.
There will be a legal obligation for businesses to pass on the full amount to employees.
This will include not-for-profits and cover New Zealand citizens working in Australia who are unable to access welfare.
This is the 3rd and largest stimulus package announced since the coronavirus outbreak.
Part time and casual workers must have been in their job for at least a year to receive the payment
The payment is backdated to March 1st to include those recently stood down
Businesses will be eligible if they have an annual turnover of less than $1 billion and have had a 30% fall in revenue since March 1st and those above $1 billion need to have had a 50% fall in revenue
The ATO will oversee this, not Centrelink
It also applies to sole traders, self-employed, partnerships and trusts
The parliament, which had rescheduled its next sitting day to be August 11th, must now be recalled if its to pass these measures so this isnât law yet. The plan though is to have people receive money in May.

Language really matters, so change the way you phrase certain things around autism. For example, instead of autistic symptoms, say autistic traits. Instead of disorder, say neurodivergence. Instead of people with autism, say autistic people. Itâs not hard to make these little changes and yet the impact they have is huge. Itâs a big step in the right direction towards autism acceptance.
include straight trans people in your activism and representation or iâll take out your fucking knees with a crowbar this has been a warning
And also hetero aspec/arospec people, please?
youâre absolutely right thank you, anyone who excludes straight acespec and arospec people gets a crowbar to the knees as well
reblog this version instead pls

I can help with basic politics and philosophy. For politics Iâve studied political theory, policy making, and Chinese and Middle Eastern politics at undergraduate level. I can help generally with all areas of philosophy at an undergraduate or lower level but Iâm currently writing a thesis on metaethics and evolution (involving epistemology) so if anyone wants to talk over some morals, metaethics or epistemology thatâd be great.
They werenât my majors but I could also help a little with queer, gender and race theory and especially disability theory though tbqh tumblr itself can be a pretty good resource for all of these if youâre careful in your curation.
