Regarding Louis being protective or possessive, I assume that a big part of the reason we don’t see him being possessive is because Lestat is the one with the main POV and, since at this point he doesn’t even think Louis he’s in love with him, he doesn’t have any reason to think he might be possessive. It’s very interesting because in season 1, from Louis’ POV, he felt a lot of possessiveness over Lestat. Obviously, there’s also the fact that he is at first suppressing and later just beginning to process his own emotions in regards to Lestat, but I think they POV has to be considered when talking about this. 
Mhh, I don't think Lestat thinks Louis is not in love with him.
I think he is simply pissed. 😅
Love was never their problem.
