goddamn
The saddest part is that it was the cleanest room in the house and it looked like it was probably a preteen or teen girl’s bedroom at one point. I like to play a little detective game where I scroll through real estate listings and try to imagine who the last occupants were and I can only imagine a very conscientious young girl keeping her door shut 24/7 to try to keep some of the nicotine miasma out of her room while all the adults in the home smoked like chimneys. She probably picked out the purple. It was probably her sanctuary.
If you think you are invisible this is an amazing post to remind you that you’re not. Human beings are all interconnected through time and existence, we’re all searching for each other. Someone somewhere will see you, and might love you for what they see more than you’ll ever know.
My grandparents were chainsmokers, my grandpa died of lung cancer and I know their walls would have looked like this if grandma hadn’t painted them neon coral. I spent a lot of time with them growing up and I frequently had horrible ear infections. This was the early 2000s, before the research came out linking secondhand smoke exposure to chronic ear infections in children. My parents both grew up in the 70s & 80s constant cigarette smoke miasma so I don’t think they considered that secondhand smoke could have detrimental effects on a child, because that was all they had ever known.
In school I had friends who were children of smokers. I knew a girl who was so self-conscious about the cigarette smoke smell that clung to her that she would practically boil herself in body sprays and perfumes. She tried so hard not to smell like an ashtray but the notes of cigarette smoke still lingered from the cloying sickly-sweet tween body spray, no fault of her own.
So, I see myself and my friend in this house, projection, perhaps. I see a child who used to get terrible ear infections as a child, a girl who grew up to be bullied by her peers for smelling like cigarettes, a teenager with no power over the adults in her household and the layers of nicotine stains they deposit on their walls, trying to carve a meticulously clean and organized corner of the world just for herself.
The real estate photo game is a good creative exercise but more than that, you can see windows into other people’s lives and it reminds you that everyone else has their own set of joys, struggles and lived experiences.
vader every time he came across 3po and r2 during the war probably
if you are going to need some kind of sedative for 4th of july fireworks for your pets NOW IS THE TIME TO SCHEDULE THOSE APPOINTMENTS TO ASK FOR THEM
NOT WHEN ITS 2 DAYS AWAY
I feel like to really get this circulating as it should, we need it superimposed over the picture of the turkey going in the fridge. (I can't do it I'm on my phone.)
With the 250th anniversary it's likely to be especially bad this year!
STOP SANITIZING THE INTERNET
tbh im not entirely immune to a villain with a tragic backstory but i do think villain origins are a lot more interesting when the focus is less "here is the original sin, the first big bad thing that happened to them that made them who they are" and more "here is the first time a person who maybe otherwise felt powerless in their life realized that they could hurt someone and get away with it"
you can get a lot more mileage out of analyzing a truly abhorrent character through the lens of like. what sort of conditions would allow or even incentivize this kind of cruelty? what kind of person benefits from those conditions and how? over the more typical who hurt them type analysis. imo.
let’s be primitive horses with mama
the more time you spend in active recovery from any given self destructive behavior or addiction the more you understand the common conception of the "relapse" as defined by a broken "streak" to be, like, so bad for one's own well-being that it would be funny if it weren't resulting in just a lot of misery and death
I told my girlfriend to think of quitting vaping as training her endurance by seeing how long she can run before she gets tired, then doing it again and hoping to go further next time. She said it really helped her.
When the CEO of the company that didn't turn away Nazi business says "this isn't going to work" you know it's bad.
how come they make you reinvent the concept of dinner every evening. I have to make dinner come true every evening like some kind of unpaid genie intern
if you ever find yourself writing fanfiction and thinking "this is too indulgent" that is the devil talking and he can go ahead and shut the fuck up
