PERSONALLY I think the ideal omegaverse ethan characterisation really leans into the bodily aspects of heat. which I know is an asinine thing to say because going into heat is a bodily process, but I mean it in the sense that heat is a problem you have to overcome and Ethan’s whole deal is overcoming. But it’s also something that is overcome via pleasure, which he refuses to engage in because he’s been conditioned to associate pleasure with loss and death. So like Ethan is fighting an irreconcilable battle within him, a battle of both overcoming and pleasure. Now you could just as easily do this with him being an alpha because obviously they also go into uncontrollable heat, but that is simply not that interesting to me because part of what is interesting about Ethan is his submission/deference to other people, where he loses control via drowning, blacking out, being drugged, etc, all bodily losses of control that place him into a submissive position, and normatively speaking omegas = submissive. You could problematise the conflation of bottoming/pregnancy with submission but that is beyond the scope of this post. 

So I think this all resolves into him either suppressing his heats for the rest of his life post-Julia OR he just suffers through it alone somewhere. OR. third option is @hackerchickbodyy’s post about tfr ethan going into heat and blacking out for a couple of days while getting fucked by strangers (cannot for the life of me find the post rn sorry 😔). I could see him getting fucked in a way where he gets blackout drunk or something so he doesn’t remember anything that happens (thus it’s not pleasurable and therefore there’s nothing to feel guilty about).  

but basically Ethan is the ideal omega imo because going into heat produces a contradiction within him that he can’t resolve and basically leads to him suffering in ways that are both inevitable and preventable. And also because him being a pure recipient of pleasure (again, because omega = submission, submission = recipient) is awesome because it is something outside his control. which adds a layer of flavour because I think Ethan can only experience pleasure if he's not in control OR his pleasure is not a concern for the other party, which I think has synergy with being an omega and being forced into a position of losing control over his body (ie going into heat).

Pre-MI3 I think is a different story because he hasn’t been completely broken on the wheel of life yet. Which is why it’s less interesting to me personally because i have a harder time conceptualising a narrative/thematic reason for him being an omega. I’m sure there are MI1/MI2 scholars smarter than me who have opinions about this though

So I love that the very last line of the franchise, spoken by Luther, was "Good luck, Ethan." It comes not from a superior, not from a shadowy faceless voice giving orders, but from a friend. It serves as a reminder, to us and to Ethan, that he's more than just an agent. He's a person. And while he may have the skills to save the world that no one else has, he also has the ability to make the world a better place by the choices he makes every day, which is something we all have. That was the essence of Luther's final message. That was the point of the entire film.
