#when Ilya's niece turns 18 and gets her trust she's confused #because her dad always told her uncle ilya abandoned the family to go get rich off hockey in america #and didn't even come back to help when dedushka got sick #and he doesn't give a shit about his family and left them with nothing to marry an american (insert various slurs here)#so she starts looking at stuff about ilya online and thinks about reaching out to him but she's too afraid to do it #he's so famous and rich and probablt wouldn't even get her message and if he and papa hate each other he probably hates her too #he probably just left her money so he didn't have to feel guilty about abandoning his family #but then she sees a picture of ilya laughing with a pretty woman with curly hair that looks vaguely familiar #memories of her babushka's funeral come back and she swears that pretty woman was there #she researches further and the women is named svetlana and is the daughter of a famous russian goalie #svetlana is famous and rich too and also super pretty so it's intimidating but not quite as scary as trying to contact ilya #so she watches news about svetlana too until she sees a picture of svetlana at this fancy restaurant in moscow #and it's so stupid because what are the odds svetlana goes back to the same restaurant so soon #but for the next few days Ilya's niece kind of low-key hangs out in the square across from the restaurant smoking #(she smokes when she's anxious even though she tries not to she knows it's bad for you)#one day she sees svetlana come out of the restaurant and she's still pretty and intimidating but also she's smiling and looks super nice #so Ilya's niece (really should have just given her a name at the beginning of all this oh well) shyly approaches her #svetlana looks at her and it's crazy because ilya's niece swears she sees a look of recognition there but how could svetlana recognize her?#they talk and it turns out svetlana has been low-key checking on IN whenever she's in moscow #just kind of checking up with Ilya's more extended family and sometimes she manages to get a recent picture #she always shows them to ilya and ilya cries every time #he's always wanted to see his niece again but he didn't think she'd ever want to see him because god knows what her father has been saying #and who knows maybe she just hates him for marrying a man because she did grow up in russsia #svetlana tells her all about uncle ilya and their childhood together and offers to give her Ilya's contact info #IN takes it but is still tok nervous to reach out for weeks #finally in a burst of courage she calls the number #it goes to voicemail: “this is ilya i will never listen to your voicemail”#it makes her laugh and she hopes it isn't true while she stutters through an explanation of who she is #and that she'd like to talk to him if he has time because she wants to say thank you for the trust and everything #he calls back like two minutes later he's crying and there's another man in the background trying to calm him down and they both sound nice
