PLEASE STOP SCROLLING IF YOU CARE ABOUT FAN-FICTIONS AND THE STEALING OF WORKS BY AI
Hi yall this isn’t my normal type of content but as an avid reader of fanfiction in this here hellsite i have recently started noticing something called GlimmerFics, I had never heard of this before and reading the description on the OPs post (who i am not going to tag) which read “an interactive choose your own adventure fanfic” i assumed that it would be like the choose your adventure quotev quizzes that i used to read many moons ago. unfortunately i was incorrect as i read through the fic the first red flag popped up for me
I happened upon an ad for this site while scrolling Instagram today and was honestly surprised that no one there was calling out how sketchy it is. Not only do they use AI to create these choose your own adventure fics, but they also charge money to read them! I guess you get a certain amount of free reads every day and then have to give them money to keep reading. This is gross! And it violates one of the only reasons fic is ALLOWED to legally exist! There's a very good reason that ao3 does NOT let you charge money for fic. It puts the legality of all fic in danger!
I would have relegated this all to the tags, but I wanted to share some resources here, since the big draw of GlimmerFics seems to be choose your own adventure fic games. Did you know you can read and create these on ao3? Here are some resources!
I'll start by linking this really cool resource on ao3 that helps you create a choose your own adventure fic that functions like a clickable game: How to Make a "Choose Your Own Adventure Fic" by La_Temperanza
For a less-involved method, you can also check out this tumblr post that details how to use clickable html links to create an interactive choose your own adventure fic.
And finally: browse the Choose Your Own Adventure tag on ao3, filter for your fandom and tags of choice, and avoid supporting sketchy AI websites like GlimmerFics!
Thank you so much for the added information!! i really appreciate this (and i don’t mind the saltiness at all)
