i have to make a confession: i got fat last month. there are a lot of excuses that i could use to explain why. i went home to visit my family, i went to visit someone else's family, it was the holidays, i was dealing with a health issue, etc. but the reality is i made a lot of choices and my body noticed.
to be clear, i am not into the punishment / reward food mindset. eat what you like. food should be good. when you are hungry, eat. when i say bad choices i mean choices that made me feel physically less well and that made it hard to shift back to healthy options. i KNEW that the food (read: pies and candy) that i was eating were making me feel bad, but i couldn't say no. i always thought that i didn't "like" sweets or 'bad for me' food. as it turns out my body craves what i give it, and especially when given processed sugars will crave VIOLENTLY.
i used to believe that moderation in everything was the key. now, i am not so sure. i am going to advocate a hard line - at least for me. no white flour, no processed food, no added sugar. there is a politics to how we think about food. it is particularly powerful because we experience it within our bodies.
so, here is to remembering that progress isn't linear. that being open to something new sometimes means saying no not yes. that your health, how you feel and how you look are the same thing and are directly impacted by what you put in your body.
happy friday
lemon-rosemary yogurt topped with chiaseeds, blackberries, and cashews...
yum.
Baked eggs... semi-not cute, definitely not really portuguese, baked eggs.
ok in my defense, these tasted better than they looked... tomatoes and onions layered with baby lettuces topped with eggs and a bit of jack.
Served with fresh spinach.

rainy day california breakfast... + DIY muesli
I am visiting my parents and I went to the local grocery to buy breakfast things. the shop didn't have a good muesli selection so I decided to make my own.
here it is, tossed on top of yogurt with pears and oranges from my parents garden. added blueberries, hemp milk, chia seeds, fresh chopped ginger and cinnamon. love how breaking down a yogurt bowl makes all the flavors POP!

california breakfast; at home with mom + yogurt

Lunch on the go: Layered Skyr
Going up to the Upper East Side to work today, and wanted a simple easy lunch! Muesli and Skyr with cucumber, apple and raspberry, seasoned with cinnamon, thyme and fresh chopped ginger, topped with raw almonds and pumpkin seeds. I threw 2 oz of hemp milk on top as well. Yum!
Also featuring my lunch bag which I have had since the second grade, and a dorky wooden spoon that my dad gave me...
