So. This viral, often quoted but completely unsourced tumblr post that has caused irreparable harm to internet conceptions of vampires.
We've all seen it, right? The "fact" that they're spouting has been spread all over the internet and even respectable sites are quoting it as fact without sources. So I decided to do a little research because my first instinct was "they're making shit up for notes." Here are a few disclaimers:
1. There is no single vampire mythology or even a single European Vampire Mythology. Vampire have existed in lore all over the world and in thousands of cultures and time periods.
2. Vampires have not been proven to exist, so this is a little different than spouting blatantly made up facts about like, whales or something. I am not a vampire expert (vexpert?) and this post is based on my own google digging. So take everything I say with a grain of salt.
3. The "vampires have no reflection thing"? As far as the current research suggests, Bram Stoker made it up in 1897 for Dracula. There is no precedent for this in folklore and anyway, his explanation that i can recall was that vampires lacked souls to reflect.
Okay, now for the fact. I dug through pages and pages of Google to find a mention of "vampires can't be captured on antique film or in antique mirrors because of pure silver backing, but can now because of modern materials" that had a source any more credible than 'just trust me dude, I seen it somewhere'. Finally, I found a mention of it in The Media Vampire by Andrew M. Boylan, a notable vexpert, published 2012 (ISBN 9781471764288). The source he found is, drumroll please, 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
Yup, a single-season, poorly received television series from ye ripe olde year of... 2007.
Stop quoting this tumblr post as folkloric fact, please.
