For Stranger Things season 1, they gave a speech saying "We will repel bullies. We will shelter freaks and outcasts, those who have no home... punch some people in the face when they seek to destroy the weak, the disenfranchised, and the marginalized. And we will do it all with soul, with heart, and with joy. We thank you for this responsibility." So did they completely ignore their promise?
They said the show was for outcasts. They said it was for people who felt alone. They said it was for the marginalized. And yet they decide to give their only gay male character, someone who has been miserable the entire time because he's scared people would hate him for being gay, who feels like no one understands him, who has been tortured more than any other character, suddenly get an ending where he's content being alone while literally everyone else is allowed to have experienced a happy relationship. It's shameful writing.
Why couldn't they have given Will a storyline where he ACTUALLY experiences a fleshed out romantic relationship and is chosen onscreen? He is the only character in the show that doesn't get to experience any reciprocated fleshed-out romantic relationship, and yet he has stated that "he'll never fall in love." It's very clear that this is something he deeply wants, and yet they completely shit on their most abused, tormented, and heartbroken character's wants and desires. It's absolutely appalling and frankly homophobic writing having him be the *one gay male character* be the one who is made to experience this. They completely failed Will's character and disregarded the supposed audience they said they would create this show for. They instead abandoned outcasts and wrote the show for the bullies and the people who want to destroy the weak and disenfranchised.
