what's worrisome is that everyone has more or less the same primordial version of history these days when you look into mainstream discourses, just like putin. ukrainians say they're actually the real inheritors of kievan rus, the russians are asiatic barbarians. israelis say they have a 2,000-year-old biblical claim to the land. azeris and armenians go back and forth over who has lived in the caucasus since time immemorial. china says taiwan was always chinese and pulls out 17th century fishing maps for the south china sea. and so on, and so forth, none of this broaches the fact that the real problem here is that people are getting bombed, tortured, and raped in the name of these pathetic fantasies, not the veracity of the claims

Implying that the war in Ukraine is over Ukraine's historical background as the home of the Kievan Rus, as if Ukraine had invaded Russia or had claims over it's territory. Very disappointing.

Not just galit. Sessine pretty much always takes into her service people who were about to die. This makes them more useful for her purposes since she doesn't have to worry about creating unwanted shifts in the timeline she's pursuing. Bastion originally died of Weeping Plague with his mother and sister, Duane originally became a Composer and was killed in a duel in the capital city, Rahm died in a flight experiment with his son, Prakhuta was euthanized by Delicieu, Anadyne died of infection from an untreated dog bite.

If you become a pawn of Ilganyag, it probably means you're not being kept from doing anything else because you were about to die anyway.

a general note on historical accuracy in the Iliad and Odyssey:

the Iliad and Odyssey are not historically accurate depictions of mycenaean greece in the bronze age. they didnt preserve a cultural memory of a past civilization in the oral tradition, they were projecting their own life and times onto the ruins of bronze age cities that were still visible during their own times. thats also why they "knew" where "troy" was, because they had already built a small colony in the ruins around the time the Iliad was written.

and the Iliad and Odyssey arent technically historically accurate depictions of the iron age, either, despite being written during that time period, because they are works of fiction being told by people who are trying to tell a good story. also the Odyssey poet doesnt even get the damned geography of the peloponnese correct! probably he'd never even been there.

if you want to make your own version of the Iliad and Odyssey with period-accurate depictions of the bronze age, or even just an accurate depiction of the poems as written, there's more than enough historical data out there to do that. apparently christopher nolan thought it would be cooler to have Matt Damon wearing a roman centurion helmet from several centuries after the poems were written. which i find tasteless and boring, sure, but my favorite modern rendition of the Odyssey has a lip-syncing George Clooney so whatever.

It's about desexualizing breasts and "female presenting nipples" and not being criminalized for our bodies if we want to go topless because it's a million damn degrees out. This was a popular growing movement that was still widely known a decade ago!

And the fact that not wearing a bra is so discouraged and stigmatized that people think the movement was about being able to go braless under your shirt in public rather than about being able to not wear a shirt at all says a lot about how far we've backslid in the past decade

Is the story going to veer into scifi more and leave fantasy behind?

I'm not a huge expert on either - in fact I've been actively bored by most of the quote-unquote scifi I've tried partaking in so my knowledge there is super lacking - but is there all that much of a difference between the two? I don't think anyone likes any fantasy that doesn't have a consistent logic and at least a setting plausible enough to survive a long look and a narrow squint. When you've got a lynchpin of scifi media like Star Trek letting humans reproduce with whatever alien species the writer likes, and summoning whatever food they want out of a magic box, and travelling to any point in history through magic portals...

I mean, I just don't see a lot of difference between the two genres outside of the flavour of the jargon used to "explain" it all. Your mom's half-elf is your dad's half-Vulcan. Your sister's Teleportation spell is your brother's Warp Drive.

I wouldn't worry about it. Genre-policing seems to keep a lot of fiction stuck in the mud. I've avoided a lot of fantasy all my life, too, because it just seemed like desperate reiterations of that Tolkien guy. Whom I believe wrote most of his stuff as a sandbox to play with the science of linguistics. Talk about science fiction.

Anyway, the tone and priorities of the story will remain consistent in the second book right through to the end. A lot of the stuff we talk about here never comes to the forefront of the comic :) It's like, "If you know, you know" stuff.

Some hard sci fi tries to stick to stuff that could conceivably happen but most is just fantasy with spaceships.

You should read Lois McMaster Bujold, she does both sci fi and fantasy and would be your jam, I feel.
