Chapter 25: Originality and Art
I'm trying out a new format for my #whamreadalong: Writing bout one one aspect each chapter, whether it is a page, panel, narrative theme, translation choice...
This chapters lends itself well to looking closer at Richeh's attitude towards her magic and how that theme extends to creating art and the myth of "originality".
For Richeh, art has become a means of self expression, almost self-preservation in a hostile environment that demands conformity. I think many artists can relate to doodling on the corner of their homework.
The abusive environment she and her brother experienced led to her developing an very understandable desire for individuality. But she's thinking in a false dichotomy: "I feared that with every spell i learn, i would disappear further(...)" [rough translation, panel above]
She is very aware in this chapter that this attitude leads to her being unable to do certain things, but for her, it's either self-preservation or development- she feels like she can't have both.
Which leads us to this beautiful page when she realizes that you will always able to see a witches personality in their spells:
Young artists often feel the urge to be as original as possible, obsessed with finding their own style, afraid of being accused of "copying" or "imitating" other works.
The thing is: Your art is influenced by your expierences whether you notice it or not. And things that feel generic to you might be novel for someone else. This chapter and Richeh's arc show beautifully that the best way to find your own artistic voice and strengths is to keep learning and creating.

Sometimes having an OC is like "this character is an outlet for my insecurity and trauma" and sometimes it's like "this character is an outlet for my love of vampires :)". Sometimes it's both
Sometimes you think it's "this character is an outlet for my love and nothing more :)" and then you look it over later like "shit. product of the deepest depths of my soul again"
Sometimes itâs the unyielding silence
Translation of the poĂšme 'demain dĂšs l'aube' by Victor Hugo.
Tomorrow at dawn, when the countryside whiten, I'll leave. You see, i know you are waiting for me. I would go by the forest, I would go by the mountain. I can't stay away from you any longer.
I will walk my eyes staring at my thoughts, without seeing outside it, without hearing any sounds. Alone, unknown, the back crooked, the hands crossed, Sad, and the day will be for me like the night.
I won't look nor at gold of dusk falling, neither at the far away sails going down to Harfleur Kaaln. And when i'll arrive, i will lay on your tomb a bouquet of green holly and blooming heather.

I'm not joking when I say that I can spend HOURS or maybe even DAYS rambling about how much I love the relationship between Qifrey and the girls.
I was so hesitant to get into the WHA anime when it first came out because 1) I usually don't find shows focusing on family interesting, 2) animes often tend to make things...strange..., and 3) I couldn't (past tense woohoo) stand kids as MCs at all.
And guess what. Now, I'd go as far as to say that this story is one of my favorites of all time. I don't remember the last time a hyperfixation got this bad. I felt like a teenager again, discovering some cool story for the first time.
Anyway, back to the point. I love how Qifrey is with the girls. How he treats each of them differently depending on the type of person they are.
With Coco, he gives her words of encouragement and shows her that there is so much more to magic than what happened to her mother.
With Agott, unlike with Coco, he doesn't offer as much praise. And when he does, they have a way bigger impact because then Agott knows that he isn't only praising her to encourage her but because he genuinely means it. To Agott, compliments on spells she considers 'easy' might feel insulting.
With Richeh, he isn't all that involved when it comes to learning. Which is a good thing, actually. He knows when to push her and when not to, and when he does push, he gives her an option to back out. To Richeh, being herself matters a lot, so the best thing Qifrey can do is let her do her own thing and support her in it while making himself available if she ever needs something.
With Tetia... well, we don't know much about Tetia... or what teaching style could fit her best... However, I really appreciate how Qifrey doesn't rain down on her parade whenever she comes up with a 'silly' idea. Maybe my standards when it comes to good teachers are just really low. Either way, I think it's sweet.
Qifrey might sometimes lie to them or just mess up in general. But you can't tell me that he isn't a top tier teacher. I often like to compare his relationship with the girls to Beldaruit's relationship with him, and, well, Beldaruit isn't bad. Don't get me wrong. He's definitely above average when it comes to teaching kids, but Qifrey has this special way of accounting for individual needs that stands out to me so much. Maybe Beldaruit has it, too, and we haven't seen it yet. I hope we get more scenes of how he taught Qifrey in the past. Their relationship is also somewhat rocky meanwhile Qifrey's with the Qiflings is mostly fine (slams my head against the wall while thinking about that fight he had with Coco after she discovered that something was up with him).
I'm certain that whatever happens in the story, Qifrey will never reach the point where he's considered anything less than the ideal teacher for the girls. His love for them is what made me like this story so much, and I'm sure that many others can agree. It's something so precious that gives you hope that maybe life isn't all that bad and that maybe good teachers do exist out there. Ones that genuinely do wish to see their students succeed.
I think that anyone considering going into teaching should definitely give WHA a go. Make it part of the degree or something. No amount of lectures can properly explain what teaching really should be about as well as this story does.

KICK THE CAN!
Letâs play the biggest game of kick the can on the internet.
To kick the can, reblog it. I wanna see how long this can go on for.
the oldest reblogs for this post that i can find are from january 2nd of 2013. this can has been getting kicked around tumblr for almost 13œ years now
And yet somehow this is my first time kicking it!
If youâre a WHA anime fan and have been looking for an excuse to read the manga, nowâs the perfect time to join @whareadalong! Weâre reading volume 5 this week, which picks up right where the anime stopped, so you can hop right in!
I liked this post, scrolled for like another minute before I went âSHIT FUCK SHITâ and scrolled back to reblog it
I always reblog this one when I see it on my dash. When someone posts their own art, writing, or music here they are really hoping you will share it.
Another reason why I lov Richeh so much is that in this day and age we really need a perspective like hers.
We consume so much more than we make and it shows.
There's just so much out there, and we spend our time looking at other people's stuff and absorb expectations about how our words should sound, what our art should look like, we see how people react to other people's stuff. How we react.
And if you're someone who makes stuff, sometimes you might get that pressure to make more of what people actually want. Even if that would no longer be you. Even if you know deep down that you should be making things for you.
It's not easy living in that middle ground where you're able to appreciate what other people make without feeling like there's no use making anything yourself because it would be redundant.
And you can't detach completely if you want to be aware of the social meaning that things have, and you don't want to accidentally make a statement you disagree with just because you enjoy the aesthetics.
When I was a student I rebelled against having to read other people's book interpretations before forming my own opinion. I was told that you need to read those papers and cite them on purpose so the teacher knows you didn't plagiarize. And I was like yes but I came up with that same interpretation on my own and you want me to accept that there's no value in that, just because someone else got to it first and published it.
So yeah. It's good to be aware but at the same time I fully believe that if you're someone who creates, you should create more than you consume. That's a big part of why some of us say we're going to do this and that, but we don't actually do anything. Consuming is just so much easier and by now it's pretty much expected, it's what everyone does, it's how everyone spends their time.
But that art that is yours and no one else's, it's still there, aching to be made by you.
At some point you do have to stop researching and consuming, and you have to take the time to make your own stuff. Even if you feel it doesn't hold a candle to stuff made by others.
At least you're putting feelings into words, or shapes and colors, or whatever, so you don't have to carry them around wherever you go. Art that was never made is the heaviest burden.
So yeah I'm grateful that we have Richeh as a character who prioritizes being herself, and finds ways to stay true to herself even if sometimes she has to compromise.
It takes courage to admit that something is not working out for you, and I'm glad that Richeh didn't let that learning experience dull her shine even a little, or push her into a spiral of shame.
And for us irl, if we're creative people, we need to remember what our true passion is, and spend more time doing that. If you love supporting other people's creations, great. If you love creating, you can't let yourself go with the flow, you can't live like someone who is happier experiencing what others made. Even if that's how we often bond, by sharing other people's stuff with each other. You still have the same 24h in the day and what you do with your time matters, because unmade art will come back and haunt you.
You're creative. You have your own separate mission. Don't get derailed. Do your own magic.
lov you all đ
Your dialogue is stiff because everyone is being too honest
Great dialogue can come from radical emotional honesty. But in most real conversations, people
dodge questions
answer indirectly
lie (badly)
change the subject
crack jokes to avoid serious answers
lie (convincingly)
say half of what they mean
tell the truth but get so anxious/angry/defensive others now think they're lying
If your dialogue feels unnatural, it might be because everyone is saying exactly what they think, or articulating their thoughts too well. Try letting characters hide things instead.
Subtext is where tension lives.

legit the best advice i can give you: feed your friends
any time someone is in any kind of crisis or upheaval, offer to feed them. tell them they don't have to choose what it is if they can't make decisions, just ask about allergies and preferences and tell them you're just gonna make food happen at their house.
friend having a baby? delivery gift certificate to order food to the hospital after the kid shows up.
someone's relative passes away? offer to make them dinner.
buddy gets laid off? ask if you can order them lunch.
pal stuck in a depressive episode? offer to drive them to fucking mcdonalds, if that's what they want.
people in crisis are tired and sad and angry and the last thing most of them are doing is thinking about feeding themselves. so if you have the ability or time or money, providing that is always, always a good move.
legit i do this all the time, and it is 100% always appreciated. i have taught all my friends that when something happens, we feed each other. it makes people feel extremely cared for, and I cannot recommend it enough.
Right after I reblogged this I found out a friendsâ mom was hospitalized â this is such a good reminder
If you can, provide disposable plates/utensils and save them from doing dishes â when my husband was diagnosed with cancer, bulk paper products were our most appreciated gift
