For like 15 years I've been told I have high blood pressure and nothing helped. During that entire time all three different pcp's I've had were using digital automatic blood pressure cuffs, and whenever they inflated they were amazingly painful, which I always pointed out and they never really had an opinion on.

Today at a checkup in a new place they happened to be using a brand new, but old fashioned manual style hand pumped cuff. It not only didn't hurt but it's the first time I've been told I have normal healthy blood pressure, which I made them double and triple check because I've been living most of my adult life thinking I was already a bad blood pressure guy 🙄

Is there just something about those digital auto inflating ones that just sucks?

Wtf do you mean it's like a known problem and it's never supposed to pinch or feel painful unless it's overinflating. Every time I ever tell them it feels like a knife stabbing me theyre just like "teehee, yeah they get really tight!" What is it like a weird little kink to them or something, are they all freaks

I was informed, after a childhood of extremely painful blood pressure cuffs, that you can also request for the cuff to go on your forearm instead of your upper arm. Apparently quite a few people find that much less physically distressing (including me). Insane to me that there was such a simple solution that no one bothered to tell me for so long, but it's made a world of difference ever since.

Pain will spike your blood pressure. So will talking. So will letting your arm dangle, or if you sit with your ankles crossed, or if you kinda have to pee, or if you were just walking around. This is covered in nursing school. I TAUGHT those things to nursing students. But every nurse ever apparently needs to take my BP while making small talk, immediately after I sat down in the room, with my arm unsupported. I have NO IDEA why.

I have fibromyalgia and ive been complaining about pain from the automated cuffs for years because they dont stop inflating until your bp stop rising, but if the inflating hurts your BP will keep rising and if the nurse disregards or dismisses your pain it only gets worse. I have had those automated cuffs actually turn my hands light blue and cause the lower arm to get pins and needles (NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN)

literally had to get a note from my rheumatologist to bring to my pcp to get them to use a manual cuff, and wouldn't you know it, with manual cuffs I have normal BP
