It has been three winters since their marriage to Prince Maekar 'The Anvil' Targaryen, three long years of wrangling step children, and building a strong commitment not only to the Targaryens but to their husband himself. With the busy goings of daily life and the very few moments of peace with their loving anvil, it was easy for them to miss the symptoms. Tender breasts, ill stomach, waking up later than they meant? All quite easily pushed down when distracted, that is why it came as quite a shock when the Maester announced they were with child.
The timing was quite terrible, they were busy making arrangements for the upcoming tournament being held in Ashford for the Lord's daughter's name-day. Not to mention their brother-in-law, heir to the Iron Throne, was to be making a stop at Summerhall come the morn and there was still much to prepare for his stay.
On top of it all they knew that Maekar was overly cautious man, having him know now about the pregnancy meant they would be stuck at Summerhall for the week with the three children not travelling. It would be a waste of the gifts they had prepared, not to mention they worried for the three Targaryen children going. Aerion was too hot headed to be handled simply by his father, It was Aegon's first squiring job, and Daemon needed quite the amount of eyes on him to keep him from making more work for his father. Hence their' reluctance to stay behind.
Thus they had sworn the Maester to secrecy, waving his concerns for gossip off and assuring him that they would in-fact be telling their husband once the games were over and they were back in Summerhall. The Maester himself was quite reluctant but knew better than to disobey orders. Satisfied his tongue was shut for the time, they hastily left the quaint infirmary room, hands tangled together in a nervous mess.
They were young when they were married off to Maekar Targaryen, not of their own choosing but they found themself thankful for the marriage. Maekar had always been a gentleman, after the consummation of their marriage he refused to touch them. For awhile they cursed themself wondering what was so wrong with them that they could not rouse their husband to perform their martial duties. They pushed themself to find a way into his heart, a heart that had been closed off for years after the death of his first wife, his first love.
They never meant to replace her, nor did they ever think they could live up to her, but they did believe that Maekar needed help raising his children, that someone needed to help rest his tired eyes at night and comfort the pain that radiated so deep in his core. They took their time getting to know him, insisting on time spent together learning more about the other. The Anvil was never quite expressive when it came to his affection, rather finding ways of gifting his second spouse luxuries or things he knew would be of interest, he was a stoic man after all.
Intimacy took time, it was slow at first, small touches on the hand or shoulder, these touches turned into massages to help his stiff muscles loosen. After awhile their daily talks turned into nightly ones, time spent together was sought after rather than avoided. Together the two formed a romantic bond. Maekar was grateful that they did not resent him for their marriage, for having to marry him. He had been alone for so long he had forgotten what it was like to have light again.
Lost in thought they wandered the halls in attempt to return to their room. They never thought their union would result in a child. They mean of course the act of making a child would lead to a child and both of them are still perfectly healthy despite Maekar's war torn body and aging figure, but a child after all the ones he already had seemed an impossible thought to them. They wondered how the older of Maekar's sons would take the news, the idea of Aerion finding out sent a shiver down their spine.
They were torn from thought when they noticed a body slumped over a nearby bench, it was a man with rugged blonde hair, upon further approach they recognised the figure as Daeron Targaryen. His face was concealed, his chest rising and falling consistent with a person deep in sleep. They moved to nudge the man gently.
"Daeron" they said sweetly. The man didn't respond.
"Daeronnn" they hummed giving him a harder push causing him to hiccup and stir.
"Daeron!" with two firm hands upon his shoulders they pushed him over to reveal his face.
The colour was drained from his face, his mouth and hair emanating a foul smell. Chunks of what was once food take up residence in his almost matted hair. Daeron gurgled as his eyes slowly opened to the sight in front of him. His thoughts delayed at first not registering the person waking him up, but slowly his vision and mind came back to him. He responded with almost inhumane sounds as his sense of self returned.
Gazing over his appearance they sighed heavily. They had been dealing with his hang-overs ever since they first came to Summerhall all those years ago. Holding back his hair while he threw up his guts was not an odd practice for them. Assessing him over the smell made their stomach turn more than usual considering the new resident.
"Gods you need a bath, Daeron. How long have you been out here like this?" they questioned
In response the boy gave a short shrug, assuring them that he's fine and that he just needs a little nap. They shook their head and called for a nearby maid to prepare him a bath with scented oils and flowers. They also requested a bucket of warmed water and some ointments for his hair.
"I thought you were suppose to be training with your father today, for the upcoming tournament?" They spoke softly to him, making consideration that his head most likely ached.
"Yes well, seems I must have missed that" he half joked, looking around to see that is was actually light outside "Think he'll be mad?" to that question they only gave him a knowing look before shaking their head.
"Come on, you need to get cleaned up" they said. Helping the man up from his position to bring him to his room nearby.
Placing him down softly on a chair they started to remove the several rings that littered their fingers, placing them nearby for later collection. Luckily for them it was quite the nice spring and their sleeves were short enough they did not require tying up. A maid returned with the requested bucket and a few other maids entered preparing the bath nearby.
They moved an old end table nearby the chair that Daeron laid sprawled in, placing the bucket of warm water behind his head. They asked Daeron to tilt his head back, their fingers worked quickly to gather his muddy blonde locks up and drown them in the water. Chunks of dirt and gods know what else quickly floated to the surface as they worked through each section of hair.
After they were sure the chunks of ill were gone they requested a maid throw the bucket out and bring them a new one. The maid took the bucket quietly and went to fetch new water. In that time the princess placed ointments of herb and oil into his hair. Making sure to be thorough. Daeron seemed at peace almost, enjoying the massage to his scalp as the ointment took hold.
"Thank you" his voice barely above a whisper
He knew they could have left it to the maids, been cruel about it all, others always were. They chose to make sure he was truly clean, safe, and looked after instead. They always did that, he thought to himself.
Once the maid returned with the bucket, they rinsed his hair out the best they could. Glad that his hair looked almost nice again.
"Strip your clothes and go bathe. I will ease things over with your father" They spoke as they started to stand up.
He gave them a nod of acknowledgement and slowly made his way to the actual bath set out before him. They gathered their rings and left him to clean his body.
They travelled down the hall further until they found Maekar's study. Quietly pushing the door open. The smell of ink and paper engulfed their senses. Inside hunched over a chair, up to his knees in paperwork was their husband. White of hair, violet of eyes, and weary. Their fingers snake to find his shoulders, Maekar knowing the familiar presence of his spouse leaned back in his chair. They planted a soft kiss to his temple as his eyes fluttered shut for a mere second.
"Hello, my love" they greeted. In return earning a huff from their husband of three years.
They turned the corner on the chair and lifted themself onto his lap, his hand resting on their behind as to help them not fall off. Their hands wandering.
"I take it training went... not as well as you anticipated" they stated, knowing full well it did not
Maekar started going off about how Aerion had broken some squire's arm during the session today 'fucking unbelievable' was the quote he used. He spoke of how Aegon started his training but his head is in the clouds with grand ideas of 'being a fucking knight'. To finish it off he spoke of how 'Daeron didn't even fucking show up' and the cherry on top was that Aemon just sat there reading a book on 'some fucking stupid knight from history'
They sat there and stroked their husband's upper body, his neck, playing with the back of his hair and his beard just listening to his stresses.
"I found Daeron in the hall. He was passed out, I had the maids wash him up" they spoke
Maekar made a displeased sound, not at his spouse but at the thought of his son ending up drunk and passed out yet again.
"My love, all this stress is going to be the death of you and I am far too young to be a widow. Come to my room tonight, let me take that stress away" they spoke, looking lovingly into his eyes. "And do not worry about the arrangements for your brother, I have those in-hand" they reassured
He simply nodded in response, wishing the hours would tick by faster so he could be in their loving embrace.
Once more kissing his temple, they removed themself from his lap. The place where they once sat now barren and cold. Wishing him a good afternoon they took their leave.
The day passed on like any other. They had arranged the best rooms to be cleaned, scented, and assigned servants to the quarters for Prince Baelor and his son's arrival. They had the dining hall prepared for a family dinner and had the chef organise a special meal for the evening as well as travelling rations.
Between the three younger children running circles around them all day and making the proper preparations for travel and hosting, by the time they reached their room for the night they were swamped. They had their maids remove their gown and replace it with a silk slip. They dismissed their maids and sat at their vanity.
Despite all the trouble of the day, their hair stood high and well, staring at themself they had almost forgotten what the Maester had told them. They sighed, taking out their hair stick and letting their hair unravel, taking a small knife to the sewn in parts to release the more complicated braids in their hair.
Their fingers found their way to their scalp, ensuring their hair was loose before giving it a shake between their digits and a scratch of relief. Flipping their head back they almost laughed at the sight of their hair undone. Curls everywhere frozen from their styling. Their hair wasn't the only thing that was stiff, their body was finally feeling the weight of the day.
They rose from their vanity to stretch their body, making their way over to he full length mirror near their dresser. Their slip was barely a covering, their chest practically exposed, although the fatty bits were covered their nipples stood on guard. One wrong move and they would easily expose themself. Their hands fell to their stomach gazing in the mirror side on imagining what they may look like in a few months.
Swollen in the belly, chest larger than before. This was their first pregnancy and it wasn't the changes they were worried about, rather simply if they could carry this child to term and if they would survive childbirth.
As if drawn from their thoughts a soft knock came from their door. The corners of their mouth lifted as they knew exactly who it was, even after three years he would not enter without knocking.
Their hands fell from their stomach as they went to greet their husband at the door. Maekar entered the room. It was full of candles, dimply lit but well enough to see. Before him stood his spouse, hair free of its confines and body barely covered by a slip. They took his hand gently and guided him to sit on the bed.
"After all these years you never just enter, do you? You knock each time like we are not wed to one another" they laughed as Maekar looks away from their gaze
"Didn't wish to disturb you if you were occupied" He trailed off as they approached him, leg to leg, his head aligned with their sternum
"And who else would I be occupied with, dear husband? You are my only visitor" they mused the question to him
In truth he was just too nervous to enter without knocking, he thought it impolite and found himself quite reserved when privately in their presence even after three years. He had no interest in answering them further or telling the truth, so he let his head fall forward into their chest. Placing a soft kiss on their sternum followed by a great sigh.
The sort of sigh that lets out the days woes, the stressors, and all the weight of the day. Their hands found their place on the base of his head, trailing through his hair. They looked down at the older man lovingly. He was firmly planted between their bosom with no intentions of leaving. The sight caused a slight chuckle to escape them, radiating through their body.
Maekar looked up at them after feeling the vibrations pass over them into him, taking their chance they leaned down to capture his lips. A kiss filled with love, affection, and appreciation. A kiss that words alone could not describe. They parted the pair before speaking.
"Remove your shirt and roll over, dear. Let me remove the days worries from you" their voice a whisper but loud enough in the silence of their room.
Maekar nodded, lifting his shirt over his head with assistance before rolling over offering his spouse full access to the expanse of his back. They oiled up their hands before placing them upon his shoulder blade, using pressure to work out knots from his back. Their hands trailed from his shoulders down his spine, offering relief to each part of his whole back. Small moans and grunts escaped his lips as their fingers worked magic.
Once each area was taken care of, they placed gentle kisses along his spine to signal that their work was done. Maekar felt loose and tired. He rolled onto his back after the final kiss way placed, pulling his dear spouse into his arms and loving embrace. His hands engulfing them safely within his hold. As long as they were held by him, they both knew nothing bad could come to them.
Together sleep softly flittered down to surround the pair, the days work lulling them into slumber embraced together.
