i've seen a bit of doomerism over the past few months regarding nintendo "doing nothing for zelda's 40th anniversary" and that just. confuses me

like. 1) we're in the middle of celebrating mario's 40th anniversary and 2) zelda's 35th was kicked off in june so it feels a bit early to be so sure nintendo's not planning on celebrating its 40th

The zelda timeline is actually really simple:

The pre-switch 3D games just straight up tell you what their connection is

The 2D games where Link looks like the Link from A Link To The Past have the same Link. This is made very easy by how all his Gameboy games are "Link goes to a new location and has a self-contained adventure there"

Minish Cap and Four Swords Adventure are sort of just doing their own thing and should be cherished for that.

The DS games also just spell it out for you really clearly

The NES games predate the notion that anybody cares about the plot of video games

It should be very easy to figure out how A Link Between Worlds fits into this

"Fallen Hero Timeline" is the containment zone for stuff that wasn't made with Ocarina of Time lore in mind

"This is so far in the future that everything that happened before is forgotten" is the entertainment industry version of the farm the old dog went to, when they don't want to say reboot. Yes there are references to past games. No, save yourself the headache.

Landmarks moving around between games is resolved by saying "video game geography is an abstraction, you don't honestly believe these are supposed to be fully literal, right?" and stopping there

I think it's fascinating that I can say "the games straight up tell you how they're connected a lot of the time" over and over in plain language and still get notes going "actually there is no timeline"

Like I guess some of you just zoned out for the cutscene that went "and then the hero of time defeated ganondorf just like he did in previous title The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" or the cutscene that went "and then we were going to execute Ganondorf for his plot to do the things he did in previous title The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" or the cutscene that went "after the events of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the young hero went searching for his friend" or the one that said "hey so this one takes place a very very long time before that game we never get over, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time"
