I've seen a bunch of "fandom etiquette" posts on my dash today and I'm going to say something that is maybe going to be unpopular but;

The absolutely pervasive mentality that unwanted criticism or critique shouldn't be given and should be ignored is why fans of color don't stay in fan spaces.

And I am not going to mince words here:

A lot of you are racist. A lot of your fan works are racist.

That might have been difficult to hear. And if it was, you should probably reflect on why that was.

"Fandom etiquette" has created a space where fans of color either bite our tongues and eventually leave or say something, get dogged on, and then eventually leave.

So much of "fandom etiquette" seems to be about insulating creatives from Feeling Bad and hostility to any kind of negative feedback is a pretty big contributor to why bigotry festers in these spaces.

Notice also the use of "We" in opposition to "You" and how this person positions themselves within the collective "we."

Why should "we" want you to stay;

Who is this "we"? Why is this "we" not sorry POC keep leaving? Why does this "we" not want POC to remain? Why is this person so comfortable accepting membership inside this "we"?

Ugh, PRINCE! It's 5 in the morning and you got me out here feeling too many feelings! My poor baby Rumi. ;-;

"I didn't get them."

The statement hit Rumi like a freight train, despite being spoken softly. Some small, desperate part of her almost hoped she hadn't heard Zoey right, humming a soft, "Hm?" As if that would change what she just heard.

And yet, Zoey pressed, not speaking any louder, but her voice was firmer, more present in the earth shattering silence they had been sitting in before. "Your calls. I-I didn't get them. Rich, um. He had my phone all morning." The words settled in Rumi's chest hard and heavy, her heart aching somewhere beneath the weight of them.

What more could she say that she hadn't already said? When she poured out her heart, when she finally spoke the words she had wanted to say for so long not out of levity, but out of a sheer need for Zoey to understand.

"...Okay," was all she could utter, all that she could manage to whisper.

She could feel Zoey's eyes turn to her, feel the plea that was coming long before it formed between them. "You believe me, don't you?" Zoey asked her, and Rumi was helpless but to turn and look at her girlfriend.

"...Always."

Because she did. She did believe her. And wasn't that so much worse?

Because she still knew Zoey. She still knew that despite her words, despite her plea, despite her confession... Rumi hadn't heard the last of the man who made her lover smell like smoke.

And yet. Any yet. She stayed. Because what else could Rumi do with her heart but leave it in Zoey's hands anyways?

Isn't that terrible?

Alien Rumi AU

Not sure if this has been done yet, but I’ve been getting into a lot of Polytrix AUs where Rumi is some sort of creature/animal while Zoemira take her in. So I thought, what if she was an alien?

This would be really fun as a college AU. I could see Zoey as an aerosapce engineering student (i am biased) and Mira as a medical student (and if we want to stay on the space side maybe something like aerospace physiology). this absolutely biases rumi perspective of humanity, like "wow they are trying so hard to see us so everyone must be friendly!". Zoey and Mira have to unfortunately break the bad news to her that most people aren't in the space field and aren't going to be friendly to you.

Okay hear me out tho;

Zookeepers zoey and mira vs that one strange quiet girl thats constantly near the tiger exhibit on weekdays. They both work in that area; mira actively with the Sumatrans and Zoey nearby in the reptile house. Finally after watching this woman hover for almost three months they go up to ask what shes doing and catch rumi working on little watercolor paintings of the tigers. Mira almost cries, she can recognize the individuals in the paintings. They end up being fast friends and start chatting when everyone has the time. It gets to the point where Zoey begs rumi to come do some of the snakes portraits which rapidly turns into ‘what animals does rumi need to paint this week’ and a hoard of gifted art stuck to every surface of the office spaces.
