yeah it might seem to some people that anime is being more progressive than other cultures when it shows young girls obviously dating but Japan actually widely considers that to just be a (frequently fetishized) cutesy childhood phase teenage girls go through in high school, then are expected to grow out of and date men. That’s a shetland pony! They’re essentially little bricks of muscle and fat and unlike pugs they’re quite strong for their size and breathe very well (so long as they are not allowed to become obese, which they’re quite prone to). They’re small and strong because they were bred as coal ponies, to go down mines and pull carts!

These days, they’re generally used to teach very small children to ride, or for children’s horse sports, because they’re about the right size for a toddler. Watching a bunch of 3-6-year-olds play polocrosse on these things is adorable.
