saw some discourse about what a house of leaves adaptation would look like bc the backrooms trailer came out, and i think that unfortunately, an adaptation of house of leaves would look like the common conception of moby dick.

its gonna be about the house. just like how most remember moby dick as a story of ahab and his consuming revenge against the whale that took his leg, a house of leaves movie will most likely just be about will navidson’s self destructive exploration of the house.

as a moby dick reader, while ahab’s doomed quest is wildly amusing, some of the hardest hitting parts of the story is the horror/feeling of resignation from the fact that we will never fully understand the world we live in, that for the most part we are all blind men groping at an elephant trying to get a full picture of what it looks like.

similarly, house of leaves becomes most interesting when examining the people who explore it. what is it about the house (The House™️ and the Navidson Record) that drives people insane? will navidson couldn’t help but explore the depths of The House’s unmapped rooms and corridors, holloway roberts drove himself insane hunting for a monster in The House, critics and academics wrote unceasingly about the nature of The House and its inhabitants, zampano dies writing the manuscript and johnny truant loses her mind compiling zampano’s work. YOU (in my experience, at least) get swept up in the frenzy of overexamining the story and have this temporary “shared psychosis” with johnny as the story unravels her mind. the obsession with The House is contagious.

however, just like moby dick, the most likely adaptation of it will focus solely on the story’s hook, but i guess it doesnt really matter because a future adaptation seems so far away and i dont really care so whateverrrrrr
