I hate when people say “Trump is such a weak candidate, normal people reject fascism, how terrible must his opponents be that they have trouble beating him!?”
Listen.
Normal people fucking love fascism.
The idea that all of your problems are the fault of some vague Other that is conveniently both highly visible and systematically powerless, is incredibly appealing to the average person. And they hold onto it like a diver to their oxygen mask.
My own aunts let it slip that they don’t think Mussolini did anything wrong “aside from the war thing.” Alessandra Mussolini, granddaughter of Benito, was elected as member of the Parliament in 2013, and she still has a following. There are roads in Italy named after Benito Mussolini, as “statesman.”
The reasons people *SAY* that they are against fascism is that they don’t actually understand what fascism is. Like those dudebros who kept calling feminists “feminazis” for decades and recently stopped when they decided that nazis ain’t so bad actually.
If you repackage fascism as Tough On Those People, people flock to it in droves. Yes, even when they themselves are part of the targeted group, because they believe themselves to be the exception to the rule, and that by throwing the group under the bus they can show that they are better. The “woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People’s Faces Party” meme is just the new form of the Cool Girl Who Is Not Like Other Girls.
*MORE* Republicans voted for Trump in 2020 than they did in 2016.
I don’t believe you can blame the DP’s lackluster policies for that, when Trump has obliterated the economy and promised to destroy social security and massively limit access to healthcare in the middle of pandemic, and over 70 million people would still rather freeze to death while he spits COVID directly into their mouths than not vote for him.
They actively like him and what he stands for.
Yes, the Dems such at outreach. AOC called them out for having such atrocious PR methods, and showed that she could get 100x their views by playing a videogame.
But even a competent PR strategy would have struggled against Trump, because the Southern Strategy is tremendously effective, and even more so when combined with anti-intellectualism.
It’s not even because “people are mostly assholes.”
People are mostly decent. People are mostly reasonably hard-working, and care about their families and friends, and want communities that are comfortable and prosperous.
And when they don’t have those things - and they usually don’t - they want it to be SOMEONE’S FAULT. They want someone to blame. They want whoever’s fault it is, to be punished for ruining the good lives they should have.
Facism’s message isn’t “kill the evil [whatever]s.” It’s, “You deserve better, and it’s THEIR FAULT you don’t have it. Support me, and I will stomp them so you can get the future you deserve.”
The logic is clean and rational. It makes sense.
What doesn’t make sense? The claim that it’s “their fault.” But that’s a matter of education, of accurate information access. People need to know that “THEY” did not cause those problems. And if someone controls your access to info, you can’t find that out. If someone controls your education from infancy so you never learn to ID and reject propaganda and logical fallacies, you don’t know how to spot the missing steps in the logic chains.
Fascism is popular because it says: Your life is hard, and that is someone else’s fault, and that’s fixable without hurting you more.
People want to believe that.
Hell, I want to believe that.
I don’t. But that’s because I’ve looked at history and news and psychology and anthropology and I know how human communities and cultures work. Because I was raised in a state with strong education standards, because I loved reading had had parents who encouraged me, because those parents had enough spare income that I could spend my teen weekends reading and not working to survive.
The solution to fascism support is education and community building, not yelling at people that they’re stupid or bigots.
(I mean. They often are stupid or bigots. But you don’t fix that by yelling at them, either.)
All i do is screenshot and forget it’s in my camera roll
What is man but a miserable little pile of screenshots
We need to thank poll workers so much. They're receiving harassment from outside the counting centers by Trump rioters and from inside by Trump observers and Trump lawsuits. They had and still have an uphill battle, and stuck it out to do their jobs for democracy, and the good of the country. They are the unsung heroes of this election.
in all seriousness, i would like to thank the latine grassroots organizations, the native americans working tirelessly (who turned the tides in AZ and i’m sure other states as well), and the black folks who turned up in droves to the polls. this could NOT have happened without the herculean feats accomplished by people of color in this country, and i’m proud of us
putin isn’t resigning thats just a rumor started by tabloids and has 0 credibility, just a heads up!
thank u but i choose to continue spreading this false information
it’s time for us interference in russian politics
Most Americans can’t begin to understand how treacherous the obstacles to casting a vote are for indigenous people to overcome—especially those who are living on reservations. Tribal Nations across the country have been working tirelessly for the past four years to ensure our voice would finally be heard this year, and watching Arizona in particular flip blue thanks to the heavily-indigenous populated areas makes my heart soar. My grandfather (who wasn’t granted voting rights until the 1960s) died in early 2017 and that has always weighed heavy on me, but I know he would be so proud of the fight indigenous people put up this election to say Fuck Trump.
Now that it’s official Biden/Harris won, remember:
i know criticizing the south as being backwards and regressive is all the rage right now, but actually the south is home to some of the most visionary, radical, progressive activists in the whole damn country and yes i will die on this hill. georgia flipping blue is a testament to those activists and hopefully gives you a taste of just how important this work is, and how these southern organizations need our support now more than ever.
people who live in progressive/liberal areas need to stop scapegoating the south and start working with us for our collective liberation. what happened in georgia is great, but it’s unfair to rely on the most marginalized to save us (white people) from ourselves. on that note, hey fellow white people! we didn’t invent white supremacy, but we inherited it. it’s up to us to demolish it, and fall in line with BIPOC-led organizations who are doing the work. you can (and should) help even if you don’t live in the south.
here’s a list of southern organizations doing great work and how to donate to support them.
Fair Fight. “We promote fair elections in Georgia and around the country, encourage voter participation in elections, and educate voters about elections and their voting rights.” Donate here.
Southerners on New Ground (SONG). “SONG is a home for LGBTQ liberation across all lines of race, class, abilities, age, culture, gender, and sexuality in the South. We build, sustain, and connect a southern regional base of LBGTQ people in order to transform the region through strategic projects and campaigns developed in response to the current conditions in our communities.” Donate here.
Gideon’s Army. “Our mission is to act collectively, boldly and strategically as a unified force for all children. We eliminate the root causes of the prison pipeline, save our children from death and incarceration and guide them on a secure path to success.” Donate here.
Free Hearts. “A Tennessee state-wide organization led by formerly incarcerated women that provides support, education, and advocacy in organizing families impacted by incarceration, with the ultimate goals of reuniting families and keeping families together.” (Has also been doing a lot of work recently helping formerly incarcerated folks vote for the first time!)
Project South. “A Southern-based leadership development organization that creates spaces for movement building.” Donate here.
Southern Movement Assembly. “An organizing strategy for community and movement governance…We believe that we are stronger together, and we participate in grassroots democracy to exercise political power at the community, city, state, and regional levels.” Donate here.
Black Voters Matter. “To increase power in marginalized, predominantly Black communities. Effective voting allows a community to determine its own destiny.” Donate here.
The Equity Alliance. “A Nashville-based grassroots non-profit advocacy group that seeks to equip citizens with tools and strategies to engage in the civic process and empower them to take action on issues affecting their daily lives.” Donate here.
if you know of great southern orgs, especially if they’re local to you, please add them! if you live in the south and don’t know of any orgs, i guarantee there is a stacey abrams doing great work near you. get engaged with local efforts for equality!
Just to be perfectly fucking crystal clear –
IF DEMOCRATS WIN CONTROL OF THE SENATE, MITCH McCONNELL CANNOT DO THE SAME EGREGIOUSLY EVIL BULLSHIT HE’S BEEN PULLING SINCE FOREVER.
If Democrats win control of the Senate, they can finally push forward a better healthcare plan, among other important pieces of legislation that will guide the United States to a more progressive and equitable future. The GOP is so partisan that they would rather see us lose our healthcare altogether during a global pandemic than allow a Democratic healthcare plan to pass. They proved that in this past year.
Democrats just need 2 more seats to hold the majority with VP Kamala Harris as the tiebreaker. There are 2 seats up for grabs in the run-off election.
You do the math.
Listen, the presidential race would not have been this close if more young voters had voted. If every young person in America had voted, Biden would have likely swept the election. We HAVE that power, Millennials and Gen Z together. But we didn’t use it. Now Georgia is giving some of us a second chance.
Please do not get complacent, even though it looks as though Biden is going to win. The GOP is still that same party full of sycophantic and opportunistic narcissists who old white republicans put in power, even without Trump to bow and kowtow to. They will pull the same shit they always have. So…
VOTE.
Because, as a wise man once said, the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
Fucking ratify the ERA. Flip the senate!!!
