atla purists: lok and the rest of the franchise totally destroyed the integrity of bending that was created in atla. it is a meticulous artfrom that takes years to master. every time a bender in this series moves a finger, it is a movement they have been refining every single day since birth. It is an ancient form of magic far more sophisticated than your average dumbass YA or shonen anime! because it is such that each individual bender is humbled by their own powers and subject to years of #unlock ancient lore before they're ready to correctly perform the most simple of bending. I am so proud my fave show fully understood powerscaling and didn't do something lame like POWER-UPS, ugh.
actual plot in atla: so this goofy 12 year old kid ALREADY had fully mastered his element as if he was an adult. he is gonna wake up from coma and learn the 3 other elements in like 7 months tops, who cares it's considered impossible. one of which he learned from another kid who took like 2 months to master her element. don't say sike, and also every adult will be like, AANG WHY HAVEN'T YOU ALREADY DEFEATED THE FIRE LORD. also the other 12 year old will suddenly invent a whole new form of subbending unknown for 10.000 years in like one afternoon, then go I AM THE GREATEST EARTHBENDER and she is right! also we're gonna keep it coming, here's a thing called ENERGYBENDING. you can get it from a huge ancient turtle, and it's gonna solve everything. so cool right.

I keep remembering a run of Hamlet I saw a few years ago, where the Ghost was costumed in full plate armour which was very noisy, and instead of muffling it, they had him crash across the stage, stomping so the whole set rattled, and he said all of his lines in a bellow, like he was furious with Hamlet.
And the thing that made it absolutely terrifying was that Hamlet was the only one who reacted. He was cowering, and covering his ears with both hands, and yelling to be heard over the noise.
And no one else seemed to know why he was doing that. The other actors didn't even raise their voices.
That's scary, something so loud and painful, and REAL, and the people around you don't even notice it, and think that you're the crazy one.

My wife pointed out to me the other day that apparently most people were literally only taught how to say Sorry and not how to Apologize or even that they are different things so here.

I am reminded every day why I love cats because they’re right there, doing cat things, being absolutely adorable and committing cat crimes. They are friends with me and are so soft and also sharp.

It is so ridiculously easy to gain a reputation for being competent by just reading signs.
This is not metaphorical. I mean actual, literal pieces of paper/plastic/metal/whatever explicitly erected to inform the public.
“How did you know this was the right trail?” I read the sign.
“Wow, how did you know what that flower is?” There’s a SIGN.
“How did you know we needed to use the side door?” THERE IS A SIGN POSTED ON THE FRONT DOOR.
Just…why are we having such different experiences of the world? People can read. I KNOW they can read. There’s nothing wrong with their vision.
