Octavia E. Butler's must-read masterpiece Parable of the Sower (1993) begins its first chapter on July 20, 2024.
“Cats don’t actually love you”
A cat is a small creature in the middle of the food chain that is fully aware that you are a very large thing that could stomp its head in at any moment and yet it chooses to rest its tiny little head on your leg for a nap and spreads out on the floor near you exposing its belly and its most sensitive organs. It brings dead mice and bugs to you to share food.
Don’t you get it? This tiny thing trusts you. It wants to help you too. It licks your leg thinking that it’s helping. It kneads on you to find comfort. It shares its body warmth with you in the cold and gives you your space in the heat. It hisses at other mammals it sees outside including other cats in an effort to protect its family.
Cats love you so so much. But they will keep trying to eat plastic.

Good news, everyone! My podcast’s test season earlier this year was received with such enthusiasm, we immediately got to work on building the machinery that would power a full series. It took all summer, as I and my team applied what we learned we could do differently or better going forward. I only wanted to do all that work once, because I want to do this podcast for years to come. I think we…

Wait is this true?? We’ve just been actively lied to by anatomical diagrams this whole time?
this is true of pretty much all internal anatomy, because the real situation is sort of like if you stuffed a bunch of water balloons of different shapes, connected by tubes, into a bag, itd be really hard to tell whats going on! so you make things more orderly when you represent them, and the connections and lengths and stuff are correct. like the former image is what you get if you cut it out of someone's body and arrange it neatly (and also, if their system wasnt aberrant somehow, but most people's bodies are aberrant somehow. so what they show you is more of like an average of everyone's weird aberrations)

Fondly remembering the time that a cat owner casually entered their calico Maine Coon in a cat fancier’s competition and the judges lost their minds because the cat was 1) male and 2) able to bear children
Anyway here’s Dawntreader Texas Calboy as a silly lil kitten
Here’s an excerpt from one of the articles about the drama his entry caused among the Cat Fanciers that I thought was very earnest and sweet <3
And also some of Calboy’s children!
@pangur-and-grim
He is fearfully and wonderfully made!

I was about to say he would technically be an intersex king (not because I dislike the concept of trans cats, just bc intersex rep is sorely needed too) but I did some more reading on this icon and actually found the article OP referenced.
ALT
He’s not your usual male calico kitty as it turns out. That’s already cool and rare, but he’s even cooler and rarer than that!

Calboy is a chimera!! Which is really fucking cool of you ask me. The chances of having a male calico this way are slim to none, but the mad lad still exists! What an icon. I would die for Calboy.
Everyone in the tags of this post @ cat show judges
Originally I was looking for an adult picture of Calboy
(He’s so pretty 🥰)
But I also found a source for the article screenshotted above! And folks it’s WILD. It’s an incredibly interesting read if you happen to love hearing about niche hobby drama. It’s also just a fantastically written article!
The parts I find the most interesting are about how conservative the cat fanciers association is. This isn’t even all of the parts that talk about that.
People are so mad about this cat spefically because he has female colors. An animal who couldn’t choose how it was born. This is happening in Texas by the way. Hm. I wonder how they treat trans people over there?
Reblogging again for this crucial addition
wait i’m sorry
people are being transphobic. towards a cat.
what the actual fuck.
Also, not to derail, but “You know, we don’t let three-legged cats in here either”
Well, to put it politely, “Screw you and every single one of you who make that sort of decision”
Last night, TNG was given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 51st Saturn Awards. (The Saturn is the sort of the Oscar for genre movies and television, if you aren't familiar.)
I have never cared about awards (I think I've mentioned that being nominated is more than enough), and I still don't. I'm not minimizing this, to be clear. It's fucking awesome. But I didn't need an award to know that I am part of something special.
The thing about last night, though, is that for the first time in almost 30 years, when the TNG cast was recognized and celebrated, I was finally included. (Put another way, I was not deliberately excluded). I got to stand on stage with my TNG family, arm around my Spacemom, while a room of our peers, including people I idolize, cheered for us.
And I got to be part of it. After all these years, that meant *everything* to me.
who else remembers the entire Doctor Who crew dancing to 500 miles with David Tennant because it’s the purest thing you’ll see today
Man, remember when people in TV had fun
very funny that the solution to shatner and nimoys feuding and ego problems behind the scenes was send them to the yaoi mines until they worked it out and this was suggested by acclaimed science fiction writer isaac asimov they will stop fighting over lines and spotlight if you always place the characters together and make their relationship central to the show one cannot think of spock without kirk and kirk without spock and next domino falls slash fiction is invented..
i want you to know i do not lie.. and then they heeded his words and sent them to the yaoi mines for the season 2 premiere
ISAAC ASIMOV: Why not make Kirk and Spock a closer working team? THEODORE STURGEON, SCRIBBLING NOTES: Kirk... will... throw... his career ... away for Spock, yes, got it.
ISAAC ASIMOV: Well, I -- sure. Just have them face threats together! THEODORE STURGEON, NODDING VIGOROUSLY: Threats like 'Spock needs sex to live' a threat that can only be resolved by rolling and writhing in the hot, hot sand, with Kirk ISAAC ASIMOV: Uh, I was thinking more like 'they save each other's lives' THEODORE STURGEON, TYPING FURIOUSLY: So you know the potion that Juliet takes to seem dead so she can be with Romeo what if that but it's Kirk and there's a happy ending. But first, Spock thinks Kirk is dead and just like Romeo is like 'I will soon also be dead'. Do you think that establishes enough that they are close ISAAC ASIMOV: ... ISAAC ASIMOV: *quietly leaves to go and harass some women* THEODORE STURGEON: You're right, it's missing something. THEODORE STURGEON: *gasps* An improvised titty window!
Happy 30th anniversary to the X-Files!
I feel like they should just print this out and hand it to any reporter dumb enough to ask about recovering bodies
^ that pairs really well with this quote too
my favorite part about this mspaint is how succinctly it depicts the Titan. it was just a fucking tube with titanium endcaps.
do you want to see a submersible that's capable of reaching the titanic and has been in operation since 1964? yes this has been in operation for almost 60 years:
DSV Alvin - Wikipedia
look at how this thing was designed with safety in mind:
the part where the crew sits is entirely made out of titanium, and it's a sphere. why? because a sphere has less weak points than a cylinder. it's more or less uniformly strong in all directions
if you look at other deep sea subs that support a crew and you'll notice a pattern. while their superstructure that is not pressurized may vary, the pressurized compartments are spherical. take a look at this pretty comprehensive list of manned deep-sea submersibles and click through to some that are on the list of the deepest dives
Deep-submergence vehicle - Wikipedia
I referenced the Alvin first because it was famously used to explore the titanic but the list goes much deeper (remember the titanic is at about 4000m depth)
Here's a cutaway of the Challenger. Notice anything?
the titanium sphere used to house the crew?
now look at the Titan:
its an accident waiting to happen.
the Alvin designed 60 years ago is still diving to the depths beyond the titanic, and has completed around FIVE THOUSAND DIVES because it was designed with safety in mind
the Titan got crushed into a billionaire smoothie maker because the CEO who commissioned it designed it to carry as many paying customers as possible for the lowest cost, and by his own mantra of "safety gets in the way of innovation"
you can't innovate your way around physics! the physics that led to the design of the Alvin in 1964 are the same physics that made gogurt out of you and your passengers mr stockton rush. no amount of free market entrepreneurial spirit is gonna make your tube go super saiyan at 4000m and prevent the mathematical certainty of physics from taking your life
