People I have encountered in the past month who voted for Tr*mp include:

- Homeless girl who asked for my pronouns immediately and used them correctly every time

- Hispanic woman with a large family who just got her citizenship and is still working on her English

Neither of these women understood what they were supporting, they mostly saw ads that he was going to reduce grocery prices and voted based on that. Neither of them have consistent access to information or any relevant political education, nor the time, money, or energy to seek it out because they are focused on surviving.

A vast amount of republican voters are exactly the same, and it's a direct result of the GOP strategically denying them resources. We cannot move forward if you throw people to the curb for not knowing any better.

I need to emphasize that these people are "stupid, fearful, emotionally stunted, weak willed and catastrophically gullible" because they have been forcefully kept in poverty without access to proper education, therapy, or community support and fed fearmongering propaganda their entire lives without anyone ever showing them life can be better. They are traumatized and exhausted and a lot of them are trapped in religious cults.

They are like this because the GOP has meticulously engineered huge swaths of the country to be that way. It is not an inherent personal failing and it is very likely you would be the same had you grown up in the same circumstances.

You do not have to shake hands with bigots, but you need to have compassion and understanding for people who have not yet been given the resources and political understanding you have.

I'm not done here actually. Dehumanization like "zombie sheep" is in direct opposition to the kinds of strategies we are going to need to survive after January 6th. Yes, these people voted for something horrific, but they are still people and as things get bad most of them are going to be negatively impacted– and when that happens we need to be there to support them because that is how we get them to join us and fight back. Everything that makes them susceptible to right-wing propaganda will work in our favor in the right circumstances.

We simply will not get anywhere if we are determined to not see people we hate as people. Humans can learn and grow, zombie sheep cannot.

ETA: Since people are misconstruing my meaning here, we punch fascists on sight. But if someone says "I didn't realize this would happen when I voted for the fascists" or there's even a single crack in their loyalty you scoop them up ASAP no matter how much you want to toss them off a cliff because with a bit of compassion you can get them to turn against the fascists, and that is how we win.

Let me tell you what crimes Israel has been up to in northern Gaza just in the past 24 hours (October 24, 2024):

- All three hospitals in northern Gaza are now under siege. The head of Al Awda hospital explains that there are hundreds of patients, including infants in incubators, that the staff simply cannot abandon.

- Israel attacked and destroyed the only remaining fire truck in northern Gaza. This attack led the Gaza civil defence to announce halting their operations in north Gaza completely.

- Israel has issued a kill list including 6 of the last remaining journalists in northern Gaza. Despite providing no evidence, these journalists are falsely accused of being members of Hamas/IJ, which makes them targets to assassinations as was the case with 100+ other journalists in Gaza.

- In the middle of the night, Israel has forcibly displaced thousands of families in the north, forcing them to leave their shelters/homes on foot to the south. Many of them have gone missing along the way.

- On top of relentless bombardment and massacres in the north, Israel continues to block food and water from entering north Gaza since the beginning of October. People are besieged and starved and being killed in so many ways.

These are all pieces of the same plan of Israel's complete ethnic cleansing of northern Gaza. We're witnessing it unfold minute by minute.

It's true, the Holocaust isn't unique, it holds the largest impact because it is the most recent one, at least for jews, given time other genocides will overshadow it, and it should be taught in the same vein as other historic atrocities.

There was the Effacer le tableau.

The Hutu massacres of the first Congo war.

The Rwandan Genocide.

The Bosnian Genocide.

The Isaaq Genocide.

The Anfal campaign.

The Gukurahundi.

The Cambodian Genocide.

The East Timor Genocide.

The Ikiza.

The Bangladesh Genocide, which may have a repeat very soon.

The Holodomor.

The Great Leap Forward.

The Armenian Genocide.

I can go on.

To limit education to but one atrocity, when all of these happened in the same century is an attempt to reframe or even hide these atrocities, for instance I have seen many socialists defend both the Holodomor and the Armenian Genocide, it does those being educated a disservice by treating the Holocaust as unique while surrounded by a myriad of other heinous genocides.

Guess what? If you teach people the Holocaust was completely unique and unprecedented and unrelated to any other patterns of behavior, the take-home lesson is that it might as well have been done by space aliens and there's no reason to be concerned with what humans are doing!

the follow-up here is that when walz taught his class of sophomore high school students about the holocaust, he had them extensively study other genocides and the social conditions that preceded them. the class wrapped up with a group project trying to predict where the next genocide was most likely to take place

As a person of Jewish descent I think it's really, really important that people understand that the holocaust was not the only genocide in history, nor the "worst", that the major way in which it was exceptional was the degree to which it was systematized, documented and centrally planned, that it wasn't the only genocide happening at the time, that there are multiple genocides occurring across the world right now, and that treating the shoah as a freak one-time disaster has a number of terrible downstream political effects, both as described above and in its underpinning of Israeli exceptionalism

i really think one of the reasons the democrats don't really want to work on a ceasefire (and one of the reasons the israeli public is by a majority opposed to one) is that once the war ends, the extent of the damage becomes clear. you know the quote about how liberals are opposed to every war except the current one? once the war in gaza is hindsight, it will be impossible to deny the genocide. the war prevents international observers, it prevents foreign journalists, it prevents counting bodies under the rubble, it prevents saving lives and rebuilding hospitals, all under a security pretext. the 40,000 number will likely triple. the annexation of the west bank will be more noticeable. the obituaries will finally be written, the mass graves finally marked.

above all, the war prevents mourning. it prevents the world—the leadership of the world in particular—from humanizing palestinians. they are only humans when they are victims, and the war allows israel to maintain the illusion that this is a war with two sides, that these soldiers are fighting a symmetrical war with an opposing army, rather than a war of extermination against an entire people. you end the war, you end the illusion.

the idea that continuing the war will allow hamas to recoup or launch another attack is a joke—hamas don't need to. the damage israel will take once this is assessed in sober hindsight will be astounding. not just for the international community, but for israelis themselves. all those idf soldiers sniping babies in the head will have to go home and think about what they've done. and they'll talk about what they've done. they've filmed it, they've recorded it, but it will look very different when the war ends. this is also why israel continues to escalate. they are the only ones who benefit from a regional war. lebanon and iran know this well. so does the united states. politically and tactically, israel will not be the same once the war is over. this has always been true, and it has always been why it needed the occupation in the first place—it is a country that requires perpetual war to maintain itself. how can israelis live if they do not feel threatened? what is israel if it is not surrounded by enemies, but by victims and allies?

as the US knows, israel only switches from "high intensity war" to "low intensity war" with palestinians, but it has never actually chosen peace nor has it ever seriously engaged in a peace process. this choice has never been more obvious than it is today, but it will only become more obvious once the war ends.

tl;dr: The server at a restaurant on Disney property assured the couple that certain food items were free of dairy and nut contamination and the woman died of severe anaphylaxis shortly after consuming foods they were repeatedly assured were safe. The epi pen they had did not save her life because the food was absolutely contaminated with what were, for her, deadly allergens. And Disney is trying to corporate capitalist their way out of legal accountability.

It is pretty clear cut that they did, in fact, cause this woman’s death. And her husband is asking for $50k in the wrongful death suit to cover the medical and funerary expenses as well as the mental anguish they caused. A modest $50k, not 50 million. A company worth 156.43 billion dollars is trying to dismiss the suit based on a 5 year old free Disney+ trial instead of giving this man what he’s asking for, a fraction of the amount he deserves.

I hope this makes everyone think twice before visiting the park or bringing their child to the park, especially if you or your loved one has an allergy or disability. Disney will kill you remorselessly, refuse to take accountability and traumatize your loved ones further.

Not calling this person out specifically but I’ve seen this take a bunch of times and I think it’s very misguided. JKR is not being a hypocrite by attacking Black and brown women, she is being racist. She is not being a hypocrite by attacking intersex women, she is being intersexist. She is a racist whose idea of womanhood is bound in exclusively white terms, an idea that comes from a very long, very rich tradition in western (and particularly UK) feminism.
