The last of us
[NO SPOIL]
I’ve just watched Spiderman: brand new day and it became my favorite Spiderman. God knows my favorite is Andrew Garfield’s but this one… It’s perfectly balanced. You laugh, you cry, you feel connected to the protagonist. Tom did an amazing job such as the others, I loved Sadie’s character and the way she portrayed them. Moreover, the interactions between Peter and Frank were perfect. I loved it. (Frank ily)
If you hesitated to go see it: don’t. You’re not going to be disappointed.
Only negative thing I could say is about the post credits scene. It’s really not what I expected and was kinda disappointed by it…
Anyway you won’t see time go by in the theatre!!!
If they kill Bucky in Doomsday I’m starting a revolution. I’m French, it’s in my blood.
Don’t fucking play with me Kevin.
Btw I hope Sam and Bucky welcome Steve with a « welcome home cheater » banner.
Rabbot headcanons (1.)

Warnings: none? Fluff, insecurity (Robby), reader is a prodigy (that woman is kinda a Javadi), some might see polygamy (?) (at the end maybe idk lol), the first past can be read as Robby and Jack just being friends (even though I wrote it with them together), medical inaccuracy (I studied law, sue me)

Just imagine Rabbot X new attending!reader
🩺 Rabbot who roll their eyes when Gloria tells them that a new attending physician will take over a "swing shift" starting at 12pm and ending at 12am every day to maintain a fluidity between the shifts.
🩺 Rabbot who just forget when you’re supposed to arrive, dumbfounded when you present yourself on your first day. One of the few where both Robby and Abbot are present, the latter coming from a mission with a SWAT team.
🩺 Rabbot who look at you like you have two heads, surprised by your young age since you’re supposed to be an attending. All of that leading to Robby asking you if you’re really the new attending.
🩺 Rabbot who feel their atoms rearrange when they hear your laugh at the question, the way your face lights up. Abbot who takes advantage of the situation to make fun of his friend (boyfriend?) and presenting his hand to you.
🩺 Rabbot who can’t take their eyes off of you the days after, admiring the way you work and the precision in all of your diagnoses. In awe of the time you take for each of your patients and for the residents and medical students, always making sure they understand what you say and ask any of the questions they think of.
🩺 Rabbot who don’t get used to you at the same pace; Abbot already head over heels for you as soon as you work together, while Robby keeps his distance, not trusting you fully just yet until you politely tell Gloria to fuck off when she comes around to ask you about efficiency and profits. That’s when you win Robby over.
🩺 Rabbot who love to watch you in action, coming with you when a trauma arrives and watching the way you assess a case, ask interns to take over, or reassure the patient who doesn’t understand what is happening. In these moments, both of the men could see how much you love your job. They even learn from you when you teach residents how to operate or suture an injury with new techniques.
🩺 Rabbot who learn that, just like Jivadi, you’re a prodigy, having started medical school at the same age as Victoria. That explains why you seem to get along so well with the young woman, always encouraging her in the ED.
🩺 Rabbot who get closer to you with every trauma you take care of, working together so well that a lot of your colleagues stare at you when this happens, not used to seeing Robby let someone take over so easily.
🩺 Rabbot who like the real you as much as they like the doctor, loving the way you light up the room when you go out with the whole team after a long shift or during a day off. They love to see you sing at karaoke night with Santos and, surprisingly, Mel, or when you play pool with Dana and Langdon, never winning against the blonde woman. You were a real sunshine, and they wanted you around them all the time. And that’s when things take a new turn.
[Husbands!Rabbot]
🩺 Rabbot who don’t talk about it just yet, still assessing one another about the topic. Abbot never hiding the change in his composure when you were around, Robby not trusting himself just yet to talk about you with Jack, scared that it might change everything for the worse.
🩺 Rabbot who finally talk about you after a night out at a bar, where you talked with them most of the evening, joking and recounting your experiences in med school. They kept looking at each other, a knowing look exchanged between the two men. It’s surprisingly Robby who starts the conversation, pleased to see that Jack was thinking the same thing.
🩺 Rabbot who keep getting closer to you, keeping something to eat in their pockets since they noticed you tended to forget to eat during a harsh shift, or who walked you to your car after a long day, with a hand on the small of your back.
🩺 Rabbot who were surprised when you asked them out to dinner, nothing serious but just to get to know each other better since you were supposed to work closely together. They jumped on the occasion, Robby immediately agreeing for the two of them, knowing that Jack would be over the moon.
🩺 Rabbot who now see you as a really close friend, maybe more, and who keep asking you out, which you agree to, without really knowing where this sort of situationship is leading to.
🩺 Rabbot who might not know if and when to take things at another level, not wanting to scare you off even though you seemed to be open to the idea...

Just imagine, husband!jack:
🩺Jack Abbot, who always finds a way to touch in public, whether it’s a hand on the small of your back or his chest brushing your back. Just to make sure you’re really here with him.
🩺 Jack who insists on cleaning the kitchen after you cook, arguing that you did all the work and it was the least he could do to thank you for the delicious meal. But also him refusing that you do the same, telling you he was perfectly able to do to both.
🩺 Jack who doesn’t answer your texts during a shift but always tries to find a minute to call you, just to make sure you’re okay. Even if this call only lasts a few seconds, your voice grounds him in a way that nothing else does.
🩺 Jack who loves showing off his wedding ring to his colleagues, playing with it just to gather their attention to his finger. As the proud husband he is.
🩺 Jack who swore he was never going to get married again and yet smile at the sight of the band he got you, shining on your finger. He just felt right.
🩺 Jack who told Robby about you as soon as he met you, not knowing what to do with all of these emotions he thought were gone forever. Even presenting you when you came to take his keys during his shift, even though it had been only a few weeks of you seeing each other.
🩺 Jack who loves his job but can now go several hours, if not days, without talking about it. Finally able to shut this part of his brain off when he comes home to you.
🩺 Jack who kisses every single one of your moles on your body, a way for him to show you how much he loves you.
🩺 Jack who will drive you to work after a long shift, even when you insist that you’re perfectly fine driving and don’t need him to stay up late.
🩺 Jack who tries to separate his work life and his personal one by not talking about himself that much, even though he will catch your name slipping off his tongue during the day, receiving a knowing look from Shen and Eillis.
🩺 Jack who never came to the group’s gathering before but now is almost always present with you. Loving the way you’re so comfortable with his friends and colleagues, even if you don’t necessarily understand the medical jokes they throw at each other.
🩺 Jack who finally accepts to have someone around him, loving him. Someone’s arms; he will let himself fall in and tell stories of his past. Happy or not.
🩺 Jack who lies on you on the couch when he comes home from a rough therapy session, just needing to feel you breathing against him.
🩺 Jack who calls you pet names like "angel," "my love," "honey," or "sweetheart," is unable to prevent himself from doing so; his love for you is too strong to keep inside.
🩺 Jack who accepts to watch every stupid reality TV show you want to watch even if he doesn’t understand the concepts and settles to kiss your neck or watch your face as you laugh at something.
🩺 Jack who sleeps on the side of the door, wanting to protect you even if the threat is next to nonexistent. Always keeping you safe next to him, a hand or an arm on you or around you, a reminder of your presence.
🩺 Jack who doesn’t feel self-conscious at all about his amputation, wears shorts around the house and takes off his prosthesis as soon as he comes home. You hadn’t reacted to it, taking it in and then smiling softly at him, as if you had just found a new piece of the puzzle you were trying to figure out. Sometimes, when he was really tired, you would even help him take it off or put it on, mindful of your movements around the prosthesis.
🩺 Jack who needs to tell you how much he loves you because no one can know what can happen, he learned that with his first wife.
🩺 Jack who allows himself to be happy, having a wife and friends he loved and cared about. Sure, he still had nightmares and demons, but those felt more bearable with all of you around.
Belonging.

A/N: Hi guys, I'm back with something on Dr. Jack Abbot, that man has me in a chokehold. I can't stop writing about him. That one is the longest one I've ever written, so please bear with me and the bad writing (oops). I corrected the spelling and everything, BUT you might still find some mistakes in there. I'm French, hence the background situation lol. Anyway, cheers! Xx
Summary: You're on vacation in France with your dad and his three best friends, Kenny, Steve and Doctor Jack Abbot, a veteran and ED attending in Pittsburgh, the city where you work. Having met him a few times before, your paths cross again at Pittsburgh's airport, where you realize how big a problem that man could be for your vacation and your mental health. Little did you know the pull you felt towards him wasn't one-sided, and Jack was doing everything to keep his distance... In vain.
Words count: 14 805 (my bad)
Warnings: Curses, angst, sad reader and sad Jack (not THAT much), mention of Robby, your father is called Marc (don't ask me why idk), age gap ( R is 29, J is 45), mention of amputation (really brief) and grief (Jack's wife), dad's best friend setting, happy ending, awkward moment, reader is a chef
If I forgot anything, please let me know.

Sitting on a plastic chair in the busy airport of Pittsburgh, you wonder if accepting your father’s proposition to come with him and his buddies on vacation in France was a good idea. What really got you to accept was the fact that it was almost a completely free vacation, except for the plane ticket to join your father in New York.
But right now, your ass was begging you to move, to walk, or at least to make some semblance of a movement. Your flight has already been delayed by two hours. Thank God your layout wasn’t short.
You were currently debating whether to go buy what would be your fifth coffee of the day when someone decided that the chair right next to you was the best one in the whole airport.
You frowned, exasperated, and looked over at the person sitting next to you. You froze when you realised that the man now sitting beside you was none other than Dr Jack Abbot. One of your father’s best friends.
You knew he was working at a hospital somewhere in Pittsburgh; and never really cared to ask where. You had few contacts over the five years he has been around your father. Only when he would come to see you or when your return happened to be on the same days that Jack was back to see some of his old veterans buddies.
So little to say you didn’t really know anything about each other and never cared to really ask questions.
Dr. Abbot. You nodded to him in acknowledgment.
Oh please, we’re not in a hospital right now. Jack is fine.
Didn’t know you were still working in Pittsburgh.
Bah. He waved with one of his hands. I would be bored if I retired. Besides, I’m not that old; I still have some years left.
Yeah, but I mean, working in the ED isn’t a walk in the park. And I’m pretty sure an attending doctor like you must be paid well.
He laughed softly at that, shaking his head. What about you? Last time we saw each other… He stopped and frowned, realizing he couldn’t remember the last time you met.
Yeah, I’ve been trying to figure that out too. But now I’m a chef. I’ve been a chef for the past four years.
He whistled. So that makes you what? Twenty-seven?
Twenty-nine, actually.
Not daddy’s little girl anymore, eh?
No, I think that will stay forever, actually. You laughed with him. I mean, he did invite me to your buddies' vacation. Just because he said I looked a little too pale for his liking when he FaceTimed me.
Sounds like Marc. He grinned, crossing his arms over his chest.
The movement made your eyes fall down on his biceps. And you realized at that moment that Doctor Jack Abbot was working out. His shirt was straining over his chest, as if he made the deliberate choice to choose one a size too small. Realizing you were openly ogling him, you tore your eyes from his biceps to bring them back up.
Jack noticed. I mean, how could he not? You were this close to whimpering at him. The thought made him smirk. He knew he couldn’t reciprocate the attention you gave him. It wasn’t correct or respectful to your father. So he looked away.
Finally, a flight attendant appeared and started the boarding.
You couldn’t lie, a part of you hoped to be seated next to the older doctor. Hiding your disappointment was handy when an old woman smiled at you before sitting next to you. Of course the bastard was flying in first class.
~~~
He didn’t wait for you when you landed in New York. You shrugged it off, knowing you didn’t owe anything to each other.
You made your way into the airport, trying to find your father in the middle of the chaos. Not wanting to lose too much time, you just dialled his number and waited for him to answer. He did so and told you where you could find him, laughing happily when you told him you were coming and he better not move.
When he saw you, your father opened wide his arms, waiting for you to hug him. You did so, smiling against his shoulder as he kissed you on the side of your head.
I missed you so much, my little girl. He told you, breaking the embrace.
Not so little anymore, is she? Jack told him as he stood behind your father, arms crossed.
Shut up, Abbot. She will always be my little girl. He answered, circling your shoulder with one of his arms. Now come on. Let’s get some food in you before our flight.
~~~
After boarding the flight to Nice, the three of you faced the three seats in the alley.
Well, we’re going to be really close for the next eight hours. Your father joked, hitting Jack slightly in his back. Does it bother you both if I take the seat next to the alley?
As long as I can take the one next to the window. You told him, smirking at Jack and eyeing him up and down, knowing that his corpulence is going to make it a really long eight hours.
Fine by me. Was all the doctor replied and waited for you to go sit down.
You regretted it quickly. That man was huge. His shoulders were so broad that even if you sat against the wall, your bodies were still in contact. And he wasn’t even doing it on purpose. He kept his legs closed, mindful of the fact that you didn’t have a lot of room either.
Jack couldn’t lie, seeing you frown and groan every time you changed position and realized that you were still touching was quite amusing. He struggled to hide his amusement, and that only made your frustration worse.
You seemed tense, Angel. Is something wrong?
You tried to hide your shudder at the nickname and failed miserably. Opting to make it pass for anger, you stared at him darkly. Yeah, you’re taking all the room.
It’s not me. He pointed to your sleeping father, who was already taking half of Jack’s seat. Don’t get me wrong, I love him, but right now I kinda want to push him over.
Move, I’m gonna wake him up. You told him, fully ready to shake your father awake so you could have more room.
He grabbed gently your arms, holding them before putting them back on your lap. Let him sleep. If you really need some room for your legs, you can put them on mine. He offered as if it wasn’t a big deal.
I will keep that in mind. Thanks. You showed him a little smile and let your head fall against the window.
You take him on his offer three hours before landing, your tired legs getting numb at the lack of space. You didn’t ask, just raised them and put them on his laps. Jack didn’t even raise a brow, only spreading his legs a little more to make it more comfortable for the both of you.
You slept for the next three hours, getting woken up by Jack, who was softly shaking your legs. You opened one eye and looked over at him.
We’re going to land. You need to buckle up. He told you without speaking too loud since you’d just woken up.
~~~
Arriving at Nice airport, you were joined by the last two of your father’s friends. You knew them a little bit better than Jack since they were living close to your father’s place and were always over there.
One, Kenny, was a retired lawyer who found solace in your father’s neighbourhood, far from the buzzing city. He might be your favourite person in the band. He was funny, wise and was married to Henry, his business partner for twenty years.
Then you had Steve. Steve was more grumpy, always frowning or complaining about something. He wasn’t really mean, at least not with you. You knew he had a good heart, showing up as soon as your father needed him.
They were brothers, and you always admired their relationship. Sure there were arguments and even some fights, but they always came around, their friendship more important.
And then there is Jack Abbot. He is the latest addition to the squad. You weren’t sure that Steve appreciated him. Again, Steve was hard to read. The doctor is younger than the rest of them. He was brought by your father, who met him through a veteran support group. When your dad told you about this group, you were appeased, knowing that even though he wouldn’t talk to you, he still found people to talk to.
That might be why he and Jack really hit off. You didn’t know the doctor’s history in the army and to be frank, it didn’t matter. You were just happy he might get your father to confide a bit.
Kenny interrupted your thoughts when he wrapped you in his arms as soon as he saw you stand besides the two other men.
Oh my love, I’ve missed you so much. He exclaimed. I’m so glad you agreed to come. I will be able to gossip with someone on this trip since my dear Henry didn’t want to come.
I’m glad to be here too. I have so many things to tell you.
Yes. Immediately, yes. I need updates on your life!
Kenny, move. Let me see the chef. Steve barked, showing Kenny aside. Ah yes. You’re still really pale, though. He inspected you closely. Guess that’s that shitty weather in Pittsburgh. The pollution and the crime.
You looked over at Jack and snorted. What? You asked incredulously.
Yes, you know. I’ve heard about it on the radio.
You looked at your dad, who just smiled at his friend’s antics. That’s enough, Steve. Don’t scare the poor girl away.
Bah. He waved. She’s used to me now.
Now come on, motherfuckers, let’s move. The jet lag is kicking my ass.
~~~
Holy shit, Marc! You didn’t lie about it. Steve exclaimed as he exited the car, hand on his hip.
I told you we were going to be comfortable here.
The house your father had rented was in the countryside deep in the south of France. The next house was at least five hundred meters away, which means it was rather silent, only for the sounds of the cicadas.
The house in itself was an old one made of white stones. The shutters were bright blue, in contrast with the rest of the building. Trees and flowers were growing all over the property, the smell of lavender hitting your nostrils and making you feel relaxed.
You took a deep breath after climbing out of the car, looking around with your hand over your forehead to make a bit of shadow.
You turned around, wanting to get your suitcase out of the trunk, only to find Jack with it in his hand.
I got it. Just tell me where to put it.
Uh… I don’t know yet.
Your father joined you both. You should take the master bedroom, sweetheart. We old men don’t need that much space.
You sure? I don’t want any of you to complain about your back.
We’re good, my love. Do not worry. Kenny assured you with his hands on your shoulders. Let’s go find our room and leave the men to it.
You smiled at the older man, following him inside the house. The house was surprisingly cool even with the absence of AC. The living room was decorated with taste, with light wood and blue cushions that reminded you of the shutters.
You climbed the stairs to the second floor and stopped at the beginning of a long hallway. The doors were all opened, letting you get a glimpse of each room. They all seemed to be decorated differently, with different color palettes and layouts.
I think they all have ensuite bathrooms. Kenny told you after exiting one of the rooms. And here- he pushed the last door at the end of the hallway- must be the master. Yes, it is!
You were admiring the room and didn’t even notice that Jack has been following you with your suitcase. You’re taking this one?
You jumped a bit at his voice and turned to look at him. Yeah. If that’s okay with everyone.
Of course it is. I doubt anyone here really cares about their room. He put your suitcase on the little bench at the foot of the bed. Well, I will let you get to it. He whispered as he walked past you, his hand softly touching your arm.
The contact sent electricity up in your arm. You brushed it off on your fatigue, not glancing back at the older man.
Jack walked in the hallway, trying to find which room was free. The one at the beginning of the hallway was already taken by Steve, who mumbled something about protecting the house in case someone entered. The next one was taken by your father; the bedroom next to yours was now Kenny’s, which only left the one across from yours. Great. He thought, knowing he was already in trouble with the way he was pulled towards you. He couldn’t let himself go there. Out of respect for your father.
He sighed and sat down on his bed. He lifted his pants on his leg, taking off his prosthesis in order to go take a shower and cool down. Only your father was aware of his amputation. The other might be aware of something, but he never told them anything, and he doubted your father had shared it with them.
Under the water, Jack took a deep breath, trying to calm down his racing heart. It happened sometimes, notably when he was tired, when his mind was less alert and demons of the past hunted him.
As he washed his hair, he thought back at your first interaction, five years ago when you arrived at your father’s house out of breath. Apparently you had run after a bunny a kid of the neighbourhood had lost in the street.
Actually, you had run so hard in the middle of a heatwave that you almost passed out from heat exhaustion. Your father had come get him to make sure you were okay and didn’t need medical attention. Lucky enough you didn’t; he just kept an eye on you all night to be sure your state didn’t degrade. Not at all because he wanted an excuse to look at you.
Shaking his head, Jack turned off the water and stepped out of the shower. He got dressed quickly, putting back his prosthesis before going downstairs to join the others.
You weren’t sat around the table with the other men. You weren’t outside by the pool nor in the living room.
Your daughter has already fled us? He asked, hoping it wouldn’t be weird for him to ask about you.
Nah. She is still in her room.
Women. Steve rolled his eyes. They’re always taking so long in their room.
Leave my daughter alone, Steve. Marc warned him with a small smile.
I’m just saying. The old man grumbled, looking down at his hands.
~~~
The men decided to take it easy for the first day. Kenny and Marc were in the pool, laughing with their beers not so far away. Steve was scribbling things in a used notebook he didn’t leave anyone to look. And Jack was laughing at some dumb joke Marc had made from his sunbed.
None of them had checked on you since you arrived, knowing you were certainly either putting your stuff away or sleeping.
You didn’t have the courage to completely empty your suitcase and made the mistake of sitting on your bed for a minute. Needless to say, that the minute turned into a three-hour nap. Nap that was still uninterrupted.
After getting out of the pool, Marc decided to check on you, knowing you wouldn’t be able to sleep if he let you sleep longer.
Pushing slowly the door open, he smiled at the sight. You were curled up on top of the sheets, a relaxed expression on your face. Your dad took some time to look at you with a proud grin on his lips.
He couldn’t be less proud of you. You were doing what you always dreamed of doing. He remembered coming home after a long day at work only to find you in the kitchen, singing some song that was playing on the speaker and cutting vegetables.
You had a real talent, and he was your biggest supporter. He encouraged you to pursue your career, assuring you that he had your back.
Shaking softly his head, he slowly come into the room and approached the bed.
Sweetheart? He asked softly. You need to wake up, honey.
You whined, blinking your eyes opened. How long did I sleep?
Something like three hours.
Oh shit. What time is it?
A little after five. We have some cold beer if you want to.
No offence, Dad, but it’s a little too early for me. You laughed.
Bah. It’s never too early for a beer. No, come on, sweetheart. He held out his hand for you to take and helped you get up.
Didn’t you guys leave? You didn’t want to go explore a bit?
We might go on a little walk before dinner. Just to see around the house. Do you want to come?
You nodded. Yea,h let me just get changed, and I will meet you guys downstairs.
The rest of the evening went smoothly; you accompanied the four men on a little walk on the small roads around the house. You didn’t really participate in the conversation, too busy admiring the valley and the mountains that surrounded the property.
After dinner, you decided to go to bed early, wanting to fight this fatigue off. The other men stayed up a little bit, you could hear them laughing softly outside.
~~~
You turned in your sheets, kicking the covers off of your legs. Now you regretted falling asleep for three hours this afternoon. You should’ve known better.
Deciding you were not going to fall asleep anytime soon, you changed into a bathsuit and went downstairs. When you arrived later on, you saw the large pool in the garden. That was your plan until you crashed into a hard wall.
At least you thought it was a hard wall until you felt two big hands on each of your forearms. Looking up, your eyes met Jack’s, who was already looking at you with amusement.
Woah. Are you okay? He was wearing a black shirt and grey sweet pants, the most relaxed fit you had ever seen him wear.
Shit sorry. Yeah, I just… Didn’t see you.
No shit. Where were you going like that?
Isn’t it obvious? You asked, pointing towards what you were wearing.
Jack regretted instantly looking down at your body. He froze like a deer caught in the lights of a car. He didn’t think he was going to see so much skin. So much of your skin.
Jack? You tried to catch his eyes. You're okay?
The doctor cleared his throat after ripping his eyes away from you. Do I need to stay downstairs to make sure you don’t drown?
You scoffed. No. Go to bed or we will have to deal with another grumpy old man tomorrow. You told him as you made your way outside, hiding your smirk from him.
Jack snorted, waiting to hear the door closing before going back to his room.
It’s not until he went to close the curtains that he realised the view he had of the pool. Of you.
Jack didn’t close the curtains that night. Just in case you needed help, of course.
~~~
You were already in the kitchen when Kenny woke up. You had your AirPods in, dancing on some song while you held a pan over the stove.
He laughed at the sight and sat on a stool across from you, waiting for you to notice him. When you did, you smiled, taking off one of your AirPods.
Hi! Did you sleep well?
Hello, my love. I did. What about you? What are you doing up this early?
Couldn’t sleep. Figured I could cook breakfast for all you old men. You know, make sure you get all the protein you need.
Ahah. He deadpanned. So… What’s new in your life? Any boyfriend?
You laughed. No. If they could all stay away from me, I wouldn’t complain.
But weren’t you seeing someone? What was his name… Jacob!
God, no. You shivered at the memory. He left my life six months ago. And I’m grateful he did.
And no one else since then?
You shook your head. No one that mattered.
And what about your job? Your dad told us you started a new one recently.
Yes! It’s a new restaurant in Pittsburgh, it opened recently so it’s still really trendy. The team is so great and creative. Like I have a say in the menu, in the produce…
You look really happy there.
I am. You grinned.
You know Jack’s also working there?
Yes, Dad told me.
And you've never seen each other there?
Nop. You popped the "p". We only met at Dad’s. Kenny just hummed, looking pleased with himself. What?
He raised both of his hands. Absolutely nothing, my love. You just seem to get along really well.
I get along with all of you. You laughed softly. Now do you want to try my Œufs Bénédicte?
Yes. He clapped his hands with excitement, gesturing at Marc, who just had woken up to come eat. Your daughter is cooking us breakfast.
~~~
Are you sure you want to do that? You asked all of them, your hands on your hips and one of your brows raised.
You were met with "Yeah!" And "Why not?"
I mean you’re in your sixties… I don’t want you to get stuck in a tree or something.
Mind you, Jack is only 44. Kenny interrupted you.
You looked at Jack, who was already staring at you with his arms over his chest and a smirk on his lips.
We will be fine. Your father assured you.
They wanted to do what French people called "accrobranche" which basically meant swinging from one tree to another on cables. Seeing the average age of the people at the adventure park, your father and his friends were among the oldest. Hence your concern.
Jack’s a doctor. It’s fine. Steve added with a roll of his eyes, clearly not a big fan of the grey-haired man.
Kids were screaming above you, their parents walking under them with worried glances.
Then let’s do it. You smiled, walking to the reception to get some harnesses. Hi.
Hi, my name is Pierre. How can I help you today? The man, who must be around your age, asked you with a smile.
We would like to get equipped.
Sure, how many people are you guys?
Five. You looked behind you where the four men were standing, waiting for you.
Pierre made you pay the ticket and then went to get harnesses. He gave one to each man and then walked to you. Do you need help? I can attach it if you want me to.
Oh hum… I think I will manage. Thank you, though! You replied politely, your cheeks heating with embarrassment to be flirted with in front of your dad.
After putting your equipment on, Pierre explained the rules of the park and insisted over the fact that you could get help at any point on the parkour. When he was done, he turned to you.
If you need any help, don’t hesitate. I- We’re here to help you.
I think she will manage just fine. Jack called out, staring weirdly at the young man. Thank you for the explanations though.
Oh y-yeah of course. Have fun!
Well, that was awkward. You laughed awkwardly, looking at all the men.
Kenny was looking at you with a big smile on his lips; your father was completely unbothered, and Steve was quite literally not listening to you. He might have stopped listening as soon as the boy started talking.
You all walked to the start of the first parkour, you and Jack going first, followed by Henry, your father and Steve.
The first part was wooden logs spaced apart and suspended, perhaps 2 metres above the ground. It was easy to walk on them, and you arrived to the platform in a few seconds, Jack right behind you.
Henry was already screaming as the logs moved under his feet. You smiled and encouraged him as you started the next segment. This time you had to walk on a cord, and another cord at shoulder level to help you.
This one was a little more tricky since the cord wasn’t that taut and you were wobbling around.
If she is struggling, how am I going to be able to do it? Kenny whined, looking really worried at the sight of your body trembling on the cord.
When you put your first foot on the wooden platform, the cord moved under the other, signaling that Jack had started to walk on it.
The parkour wasn’t that hard, but Kenny, Steve, and your father were struggling more the more you progressed. You ended up having some advantage on the rest of the group, even on Jack, who was doing quite well.
You could see the end of the parkour, with only a zip line separating you from it. You didn’t wait for the others to step on the same platform as you and glided down the zip line, enjoying the wind on your face.
When Jack arrived after you, you heard a strange noise as his right leg touched the ground. The weird expression on his face didn’t really reassure you either.
Are you okay? You asked him as you moved closer.
Yeah, my leg just didn’t really like the whole being up in the sky thing. It’s not used to do that much movement.
You’re an ED doctor running all night, what do you mean your leg is not used to that much movement?
Jack glanced behind him to see where the rest of the group was before looking back at you. He sighed, bending down to raise the right leg of his pants to his knee. You widened your eyes slightly at the sight of his prosthesis. Recovering quickly, you looked back at his face with a smile.
Well, I guess you just initiated it to tree climbing.
He laughed, shaking his head. You could see the tension in his shoulders ease away. Was he anxious about your reaction?
Does any of them know? You nodded your head to the three other men who were starting the zip line.
Your father.
Then it will be our little secret. You grinned at him before returning your attention to your dad, who was coming full speed towards you.
Your reaction warmed Jack’s heart. He wasn’t ashamed of his amputation. Hell, most of his colleagues knew about it if they stayed around after the end of the night shift. He just never brought it up with this group of friends. After all, they all carried luggage from the past.
Of course the doctor had met people who reacted badly at the view of his amputated leg. Either out of awkwardness or maybe disdain. He didn’t really know.
Jack didn’t know what was going to be your reaction. Still, a part of him was sure you weren’t going to be one of these people who would ask thousands of questions or look at him with pity. He lost his leg, grieved it, dealt with it in therapy and was now able to live his life almost as peacefully as before.
You’re good to continue?
I am. I’m just not so sure about them. He stared at the three other men who were walking to you, Kenny really pale.
For the love of God, please let’s stop now. He begged no one in particular.
You laughed as he grabbed your hand to hold onto your support. What happened?
I’m pretty sure I lost what was left of my dignity up there.
So not that much. Steve grumbled under his breath, but everyone still heard him.
Fuck you, Steve. Kenny shrieked at him.
Marc, you good? Jack asked your father.
Yeah… He was out of breath too. I just didn’t think it was going to be that…
Look at them, showing off because they’re young and active and working out. Kenny added, looking at you and Jack with envy.
Stop acting like I’m some… Gym bro or something. Because I’m not.
You work out after your night shifts. Marc pointed.
I did. Past tense.
Yeah, yeah, sure. Marc waved, already walking to the exit of the park. Let’s take it easy for the rest of the afternoon. I’m not sure Steve’s heart can handle much more.
You fucker, talk for yourself.
~~~
You drove back to the house since none of the men were in the state to do so. Even Jack had looked at you apologetically before climbing in the backseat. The drive wasn’t a long one, and yet all of them had fallen asleep on the way, one of them snoring loudly. You were pretty sure it was Steve even though he always said he didn’t.
When you parked in front of the house, you wondered if you needed to wake them up or just leave the car running until they woke up. You didn’t need to make any choice since Steve woke up suddenly with a loud scream, waking all of his friends up in the process. You jumped, a hand clutching your chest.
What the fuck?! Marc looked at him, fear on his face.
What? Steve asked as if nothing happened before jumping out of the car.
That man is fucking weird. You shook your head, turning off the car and exiting.
~~~
You were searching the whole house for your cap, the one you had just this morning. You thought you had left it on the vanity in your room, but it was nowhere to be seen.
Your father was sleeping soundly in his room, the door slightly agape just in case. Kenny was listening to a podcast in his bath, telling everyone to not disturb him.
Coming downstairs, you looked around in the living room for your cap, still not finding it. What you found, though, was a sleeping Steve spread out on the couch. His mouth was open, and loud snores were coming out of him. You shook your head with a soft smile. Still no cap.
Walking to the kitchen, you find a simple black cap on the island. You presumed it was your father’s and just took it, knowing he wouldn’t mind.
Going outside, you walked to the pool and let your towel fall on the floor. Your dad had taken out an inflatable mattress the day before, and you decided to lie on it in the pool for a bit.
Sunglasses and cap on, you closed your eyes, enjoying the feel of the water under your hands and feet.
Is that my cap? You heard someone ask from the side of the pool.
You opened one eye to find Jack standing with his hands on his hips right besides the pool, at your level. He seemed so tall like that. You couldn’t stop yourself and checked him out.
Maybe…? To be honest, it was just lying there and I thought it was my dad’s.
Can’t you read? He nodded to the inscription on the cap - something about the army, you thought.
You frowned at his tone. No need to be rude.
Jack’s shoulders rose slightly at your reaction, realising that his reply had come out harder than he intended to. To be frank, he was destabilised by the sight of you wearing his army cap. The one he kept even after coming home with PTSD. When he couldn’t stomach seeing any reminder.
And after all, the cap could’ve been your father’s. He doubted you knew in what regiment your father served in.
He cleared his throat and continued to stare at you.
If you want it back, you will have to come get it. You don’t know what prompted you to say that. Hell, you cringed as you heard the words come out of your mouth.
Jack was clearly not expecting that either, seeing the way his eyes widened slightly. He recovered quickly, crossing his arms over his chest.
You’re playing a game I can’t be a part of. Was all he said before leaving you alone outside to face your embarrassment.
What the fuck just happened?
~~~
Jack slammed his door a bit stronger than he wanted to, his hands in his hair. What the fuck was that? He didn’t think you could be so… open about whatever this was.
He felt like a creep. You were fifteen years younger than him for fuck’s sake. And one of his closest friends’ daughter.
But that meant you also felt this weird energy between the two of you. This pull he only felt with his late wife.
Jack took a deep breath and did the only thing he could. Call Robby or Dana. Whoever answered first. He wasn’t sure, but if he remembered correctly, today was Robby’s day off.
Brother, what can I do for you? The other doctor asked him after answering the phone on the third ring. I thought you were on vacation.
I am. Or was. Fuck.
What the hell happened to you? You sound strained.
Do you remember Marc?
I’ve heard of him, yes. Jack could almost hear Robby roll his eyes at the stupid question. Why?
He has a daughter. A twenty-nine chef daughter who works in Pittsburgh.
…Okay…
Said daughter is with us.
A pause. Oh.
Yeah, "oh". The grey-haired man deadpanned.
I mean she’s twenty-nine. It’s not that young. Her frontal lobe has been fully developed for four years.
I can’t, man… It’s not… Marc… I can’t.
Robby chuckled on the other side of the line. Then get your head outta your ass and step back. She will understand why it’s not possible. But. He paused again. Don’t look at her with your puppy eyes. Reduce your interaction to the strict necessities.
I’m not doing anything! He exclaimed.
Believe me, brother, you do. You’re kinda magnetic. And unbothered. But don’t fuck this up. Out of respect for her dad, sure, but also and above all for her and you. He laughed even more. I’m never going to let that down.
Go fuck yourself, man. Jack hung up with a roll of his eyes; he still felt like shit.
~~~
You didn’t lock yourself up in your room, choosing to own it like a big girl. You flirted and got a cold shower, so what? You will survive. It’s not big deal. At all.
Except Jack has been avoiding you and every room you were in. Which meant that he was basically the one who locked himself up in his room. Your father started to suspect something was up, and you were practically sure that Kenny already knew what happened just from the way he was looking at you. It’s fine; everything was fine.
It has been two days since the pool incident, and he has yet to speak a word to you. Not wanting him to miss most of his vacation because of that stupid sentence, you stepped back. Letting the four men go to do activities while you either stayed at the house or went to the towns around the house to visit.
It worked just fine until your dad knocked on your door, a white shirt in his hands. Hi sweetheart. He greeted you with a warm smile. Get ready, we’re going out tonight.
Where?
At a nice restaurant Kenny wanted to try for ages. I don’t have the name, he just told me to dress accordingly. He rolled his eyes.
When are we leaving?
In about thirty to forty-five minutes.
You nodded and watched him leave the room and close the door behind him. Well, shit. That was going to be an awkward meal.
~~~
You were right. It was fucking awkward, and you were not even at the restaurant yet. When you came downstairs all dressed up, you only found your dad and Kenny standing in the living room.
Look at you! You look like an actress at the Festival de Cannes. He held out his hand to help you descend the last steps.
Why, thank you, my dear. You laughed softly at Kenny’s antics and grabbed his hand.
You look fantastic, honey. Marc smiled at you.
The three of you came out of the house, your arm now linked with Kenny’s. Your steps faltered slightly when you saw Jack, his back against the car. He was wearing green linen pants with a shirt. He was incredibly hot.
Jack held his breath for a few seconds when he perceived you after two days of no contact. You were magnificent. There were no other words to describe you.
Steve side-eyed him weirdly when he noticed how tense the doctor had become. He didn’t say anything, and that didn’t help Jack’s nerves.
He nodded to you and climbed in the drive seat. You walked to the other side of the car, fully intending to climb in the back seat when Marc called your name.
I think you should climb in the front, honey. The roads are kinda tricky, and I would hate it if you couldn’t enjoy the meal because you felt nauseous.
You didn’t say anything, just nodded to show your agreement before going to the other door. When you opened it, Jack’s eyes went comically wide when he realized that you were going to be seated next to him. He recovered quickly and diverted his attention before starting the car.
Things didn’t get better when he walked in last in the restaurant after parking the car and realized the only empty spot was across from yours. He hid it like a champ.
You almost laughed every time you noticed that he was doing everything he could to avoid any eye contact or conversation with you. The bastard was actually smooth.
The doctor refused to drink even when you assured him that you could drive back to the house. It’s not that he didn’t trust you. He didn’t trust himself around you sober, so with some liquid courage…
The memo didn’t get passed to the whole table since by the dessert your dad, Kenny, and Steve were laughing loudly at anything. Thankfully, the restaurant had emptied out a bit; you would have received more weird glances either way.
Three of you five being drunk meant the only one you could actually have a conversation with was Jack. You both knew it and ignored it. Silence was all for the rest of the meal.
When you were done, Jack got up to pay and left you for five minutes, which meant you had to get the three other idiots up on their feet.
Now come on, guys. Please don’t get run over. You told them when you exited the restaurant to wait for Jack.
They’re all here?
Yep. You popped the p and grabbed Kenny’s forearm to prevent him from walking right on the road. Not that way Kenny.
You safely buckled them in the car, with Jack taking care of your father and Steve, who was still as grumpy as he was sober. He was grumbling about aliens or some conspiracy theory he firmly believed in. You couldn't stop yourself from smiling at him, knowing drunk Steve was exactly the same person sober.
What's so funny? Jack asked you from the other side of the backseat where he was buckling your father.
It feels like a million ages ago that my dad was actually the one driving me home after a party.
You returned your attention to Kenny, who was whining over the fact that he really wanted to call Henry to tell him how much he loved him. It was heartwarming to see how much these two loved each other. How long they waited before acting on their feelings.
Pssst. Kenny whispered loudly in your ear. You want to know a secret? You nodded. Jackie has a crush on you. The man proceeded to burst out laughing as if he had just told the funniest joke ever.
You didn't look at Jack's face, noticing the way his hands faltered over the seat belt.
Sure. Please don't do anything stupid until we get home.
You closed the door and climbed in the passenger seat, waiting for the doctor to do the same. After he did, he turned on the car.
Ready? He asked you, looking directly at you for the first time since two days.
You nodded and he took off.
Did you like the meal? He asked you after a while of driving through the winding roads.
It was fantastic. The French are really the most talented cooks in the world. Like the association of the strawberry, the peac,h and the basil for dessert? To die for. You bit your lips at the memory. God, I'm getting so much inspiration right now. You were illuminated with happiness.
Did you always know you wanted to do that?
Pretty much since I'm a teenager. Cooking has always been a way for me to deal with my feelings. A healthy way, you know. You explained with your hands. Do you cook?
Yeah. I have to since I'm living alone. I'm not so bad. Not at your level, of course, but I manage on my own. Most of the people I work with are always ordering takeout. When they go home, they're usually too tired to cook anything.
I think I would be too, if I came out of a twelve-hour shift.
Yeah, well, you almost have the same schedule as us.
You snorted. Not at all. I mean, I start around five and finish at one am. It's nothing like a shift in the ED.
I will take your word on that. He parked in front of the house and waited for you to get out first.
You helped Kenny out of the backseat, walking him upstairs to his room. You left him to change before returning to the car to help Jack with the others.
You're fine with Steve? You asked him as your dad put an arm around your shoulders.
Yeah. He shrugged. I mean, what's the worst that can happen? He said with sarcasm, fully aware of the later dislike.
If he tries to bite you, just call me. You replied with a smirk, helping your dad inside.
What do you mean "bite me"?! He called out after you.
~~~
Once again, you put on your swimsuit, ready to go swim some laps in the pool. The moon was hiding behind clouds, and you were thankful for the lights that had been installed outside.
You stopped dead in your tracks when you noticed that you weren’t alone out there. Jack was sitting on the border of the pool, his legs in the water. You knew he had heard just by seeing the way his back tensed.
Shit, sorry. You apologized for disturbing what seemed to be a moment of meditation. I can come back later, if you want. You pointed to the door with your thumb.
No, it’s okay. It’s already late as it is. I don’t think I’ll sleep well knowing you’re swimming alone in the middle of the night.
You thought he was going to leave since he didn’t want to be in your vacinity and yet, he stayed where he was sat looking down at the water wrapped around his skin.
You tried to ignore him the best you could, not wanting to perturb him more than you already did. You descended in the pool, sighing as the cold water hit your skin. You swam a few laps, your mind focused on the fact that you really shouldn't glance at the doctor. He seemed to be deep in himself when you came out of the house, and staring at him would really be putting a nail in your coffin.
Your fight against yourself didn't last since after touching the wall of the pool with your palms, you risked a glance at the man. He was still looking down at the water, completely static.
That's when you noticed he had taken off his prosthesis, his right leg shorter than the other. You weren't sure if he was actually looking at his stump or if he was just lost in his thoughts.
Okay, I'm sorry to bother you again, but you're kinda freaking me out right now. You told him from the opposed side of the pool. Are you okay?
Jack immediately raised his head to look at you. You didn't miss the way his eyes racked your whole body before stopping on your face.
You're worrying about me, Angel? There he was, the cocky Jack of the airport.
I mean, you look like you're going to jump off the roof. I'm just making sure you're not actually going to do that.
His smile was a little bit sad, not reaching his eyes. Nah, I'm just... Thinking. He sighed.
... About jumping off a cliff? You tried again.
He laughed now, with his full body shaking, his legs creating little waves in the pool. He whipped a tear from his cheek. Fuck, I needed that.
You swam closer, stopping not so far from him, so close that you had to look up to see his face. I'm serious, though. Are you okay?
Yeah, I'm thinking about something a friend said.
Are you sure they're a friend? Because your face looked the opposite.
He snorted. He is a close friend. He is just... Brutally honest and kinda an asshole?
Sounds like someone I know. You replied pointedly, he smiled. About last time-
It's okay. Jack immediately interrupted you.
For the love of God let me finish. You hissed and deturned your attention. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable. I was out of line and completely read the situation wrong.
You didn't. It was so sincere you had to look back at him to make sure he was serious.
What do you mean? You walked a step closer.
You didn’t read the situation wrong. I’m the one who should apologise.
You laughed softly. You didn’t do anything wrong.
Just thinking about you the way I do is wrong. You held your breath; he shook his head and averted his eyes for a few seconds. If your father knew about that…
He wouldn’t do anything.
He scoffed. Yeah, sure. His friend is lusting after his daughter, and he will just what? Accept?
Lusting, eh? You smirked, approaching him even closer, your chest almost touching his knees.
You looked down and watched the small gape between the two of you. You raised your hand and put it on his right knee slowly, making sure he was okay with your touch. When he didn’t push you away, you smiled a little. Does it still hurt?
The prosthesis sometimes does. Notably after a long shift. His hand played with your fingers. Or after climbing a tree. He joked.
I think Kenny is still shaking. You laughed too and turned your head to hide a shiver.
You’re cold. He noted, stopping his movements and now holding your hand.
I’m alright.
Maybe you should go back inside.
Maybe I should. None of you moved.
A loud noise broke the bubble you had built around the two of you, pushing you to step back from the doctor before anyone could misinterpret anything. You swam to the stairs, climbing out of the pool, knowing very well that Jack’s eyes were still on you. You wrapped your towel around you and walked past him, whispering a good night as you made your way back inside.
Jack still felt the ghost of your touch even when he was lying alone in his bed.
~~~
When Jack made his way downstairs, way later than he habitually does, he was met by his three friends and none of your trace. Weird, since you were always ones of the first one to be up, insisting on cooking breakfast for the whole house.
Steve was outside, in the middle of the grass, making movements that could look like yoga if it was anyone else. He stared for a while longer until Marc came to stand besides him.
Is he okay?
Yeah, his daughter gifted him a lesson of yoga for Christmas. Since then, every morning he does a short session. Marc patted him on the back. Be happy he is dressed. It's not the case when he's home.
He has a daughter?
Four actually. All from different women. But that man would walk through fire for them.
Well, shit. Jack laughed, shaking his head.
Speaking about daughter- Jack stiffened- have you seen mine?
No. Why? She didn't come down yet? Your father shook his head. I think she might still be sleeping, she was in the pool until late last night.
Really? Were you with her?
Jack cleared his throat, refusing to look at your father. We crossed paths when I was going to sleep.
Should I go see if everything's alright?
It's only ten. You should wait until at least eleven.
Your father nodded, a worried expression on his face. The doctor smiled at him with reassurance even though his own guts were telling him that something was wrong.
~~~
Your head was killing you. You had woken up completely dehydrated early in the morning, and swallowed a bottle of water before going back to sleep. You didn't have the force to get up, your limbs were too sore to do anything but lie there in your bed. You were so fucking hot.
Someone knocked on your door, waiting for you to say anything. Come in. You whined, pushing the heels of your palms in your eyes.
Honey? Are you okay?
No. I have a terrible headache that won't go away.
Oh, sweetheart. Your father came closer, pushing hair from your burning forehead. You're burning. I'm gonna go get Jack.
You didn't have time to protest that your father was already downstairs, calling Jack to come check on you. He quickly climbed the stairs, too quickly, and pushed open your bedroom's door.
Hi. He told you as he came closer to your bed. Where do you hurt? He asked softly, standing right beside the side of the bed you were on.
Everywhere. Mostly my head. And my limbs. You swallowed. Fuck, I'm so thirsty.
I'm gonna go get some water for you. Your father said.
Please bring the first aid kit too. Jack told him. Did you stay outside the whole afternoon yesterday? You nodded and watched as your father handed him the first aid kit. Can I? He asked, showing you the forehead thermometer he was holding, and you nodded.
The coldness of his hands against your burning forehead was moan-worthy. You held it in and waited for him to be done.
You have a fever. You might have heatstroke. He told you, his eyes scanning your face.
What do we do in that case? Marc asked him.
We make sure she drinks enough and wait for her to cool down. Did you take anything for your headache?
At eight.
At twelve you can take another one. Do we have anything that could refresh her?
I think I saw a fan in my closet. I will be back.
Jack sat down beside you, the mattress dipping under his weight. I really want to do a bad joke right now, but I'm not going to. He told you with a small smile.
You don't need to, I almost said it too. You watched your father plug in the fan, sighing in relief as the cool hair hit your skin. So no boat activities for me, eh?
Nop. Bedrest until you feel better.
We're cancelling.
What? You frowned and sat up. No you don't. I will be fine, I just need to drink some water. You guys should go.
And leave you alone? Hell no. Your father replied, crossing his arms.
I will stay with her. Make sure she cools down enough.
You sure?
Yes. I'm the doctor here. Besides what would you do? Stand there and look at her with worry?
Marc ignored him. Are you going to be okay with Jack? I can stay.
Yeah, I'll be fine. Beside Jack and I have a Tic-Tac-Toe game to finish. You smiled. I'm serious. Go. You waved your hand, urging him to leave.
He agreed, nodding once before throwing a worried look at Jack.
I'll take care of her, don't worry.
Your father relucutantly agreed, stopping to kiss you on the forehead before leaving. You waited to hear the car drive away before opening your mouth.
I'm not sure being alone with you is the right way to make my fever go away. You laughed as Jack winced at your cringe joke.
Do you want to stay here, or would you rather be in the living room? It might be cooler there. I can close the shutters if you want.
You nodded, and Jack held out a hand for you to take to get up. You did and walked with him downstairs, his hand never leaving yours. Just in case you fell, of course.
He made sure you were comfortable on the couch, keeping cold water close to you and plugging in the fan he had gotten downstairs. You thought he was going to leave you alone and were surprised when he plopped down on the couch besides you. He grabbed the remote without hesitation, trying to find something to watch.
You've got to be kidding me. You groaned as you realized what he had put on. Lethal weapon? Really?
Shut up, it’s a classic. And I’m sure you’ve never seen it.
Excuse me?! You exclaimed, offended. Have you never met my dad or…?
Unfortunately I did. He deadpanned, raising his feet on the table. Now shut up and watch.
You fell asleep ten minutes in the movie.
~~~
You opened your eyes to a dark and empty living room, Jack’s spot empty. You wiped your eyes, taking in your surroundings.
Your headache had gone, thanks to the painkiller you had taken. You felt better even if your legs were still sore. You didn’t feel as hot as you did, meaning that your fever must have gone down.
But you were confused as to why the house was so silent. Sure, your father, Kenny, and Steve were gone for the day on a boat, but Jack was supposed to stay home to keep an eye on you. Thing he had taken really seriously.
You got up, wincing at the soreness of your whole body, and started a quest to find Jack. It only took you two minutes, and you stopped dead on your way when you saw him.
Fuck me. You whispered as you took the scene in front of you.
The grey-haired man was shirtless, standing in the grass looking edible. He must be doing some sort of yoga, considering he had his eyes closed and his breathing seemed to be following a certain pattern.
Since he hadn’t seen you yet, you took your time to admire him. You had seen a lot of pretty men in your life; you even dated some of them. But all of your exes looked like boys next to Dr. Jack Abbot. His grey curls, his toned chest, and the way he carried himself, like he knew he was handsome… All of that added up to create a beautiful man, both sarcastic and kind but also very, very caring for the people he loved.
You didn’t know him that much and never asked about his past as a veteran or as a husband. But one look at him was enough to understand that about him. You knew he was in therapy, your dad had told you that much. It must have been working since he wasn’t wearing his ring anymore.
He was a deeply scarred man, both physically and emotionally, but he was also a good friend, a good doctor, and a good man.
Are you going to stand there and catch another heatstroke? He called out to you, getting your attention.
Busted. You shook your head, trying to chase the thoughts away, and walked to him. What are you doing?
Yoga.
You, Doctor Jack Abbot, are doing yoga?
What’s so surprising?
I don’t know… everything?
Steve does too.
You snorted. Yeah sure.
Ask your father, he will confirm.
Seriously? He nodded. Well shit.
That’s what I said. He replied, keeping going with his breathing exercises.
You kept watching him, closer now and completely entranced by the way he was moving. The bubble was once again popped by your phone ringing now. You grabbed it in your hand, fully intending on turning it off.
It’s my dad. You swiped right. Hi Dad. Yeah, everything’s okay, I’m feeling better. What? I can’t clearly hear you. Yes, he is with me. Wait, I’m putting you on speaker.
Yeah thanks, honey. So as I was saying, we might not be able to come home tonight. Apparently a part of a cliff had fallen down on the road to the house. The cops said the road won’t reopen until tomorrow.
Shit, aren’t there any other accesses?
Well, I asked a guy, he said that there wasn’t. We’re stuck… Actually you guys are stuck. We’re gonna find a hotel for the night and try to come home early tomorrow.
Okay. Be careful, guys.
Dad, send me a text when you’re at the hotel and when you leave, please.
Will do. I gotta go, sweetheart, I will see you tomorrow. I love you.
Love you too. You replied as he hung up. Well I guess we’re stuck together until tomorrow. You said, looking at Jack with a smirk.
Fantastic. Fuck. Jack thought.
I will leave you to your… yoga. You told him as you walked back to the house. I will start something for dinner.
Like hell you are, you’re still in bed rest.
I’m feeling better! And you closed your door, leaving a grinning Jack standing in the grass.
~~~
Fuck me that’s good. How can pasta be so good?!
The proudness seeping in you was not a new feeling, that much, though? That was new.
You gotta give me the address of your restaurant, I need to try it out.
I will send it to you. Then you remembered that you didn’t have his number. Actually, I don’t have your number, so let me write it on something. You looked around for a piece of paper and a pen-
Here. He gave you his phone, which was unlocked on a blank contact sheet.
You froze for a moment, not expecting him to just… give you his phone like that. You recovered quickly, grabbing the phone and entering your number. You have it back to him, and he sent you a text so you would have his.
Aren’t you scared that I’m going to harass you?
He starred at you. Why would you do that? And even if you did, I wouldn’t mind. It would occupy me.
Your heart did a weird thing. Like you felt something different in your ribcage. Weird. You averted your attention to your plate, not wanting to overanalyse it. It was nothing.
When you were done, you got up to start the dishes when Jack grabbed you by your wrist gently and shoved you back on your seat.
You cook, I clean. He simply said, grabbing the plates and going to the sink.
Can I at least dry?
Nop. Keep your ass on this seat. I won’t ask again. He warned you, and it made you shiver. Just look pretty or something. He mumbled, focused on the task at hand.
He said it so offhandedly that it almost didn’t register. But it did.
~~~
The entire scene was too fucking domestic. So much so that your brain was actually letting you down. You could almost feel it leak out of your ear. Traitor.
Jack had been nice all night, doing the dishes and cleaning the kitchen while talking with you from where you were sitting. You didn’t have any distractions, forced to actually watch him do all those chores as if you were living together.
When he was done, you walked together to the living room, still talking about your recipe of pasta, to watch something. He plopped down next to you, even closer than before. So close your shoulders touched every time one of you opened your mouths.
You liked seeing him that way. Relaxed, easy-going, domestic. He wasn’t the guarded doctor anymore. Nor your dad’s really close friend. He was just Jack.
You grabbed the remote before he could, arguing that since he already chose a movie before, it was your turn. He didn’t put up much fight, chuckling at your request.
That was another thing you discovered: Jack’s laugh. It was beautiful. It rearranged your atoms a different way every time you heard it. Which was a lot since he was freely expressing his emotions around you now.
Just to hear it more, you put some stupid reality show on, watching his incredulous face at the plot.
Wait, wait. So they’re all stuck in a house because they… want to find love or something? He asked you, still struggling to grasp the whole concept.
Yeah. I mean most of them do it for the money.
What the fuck are people watching nowadays?! He turned to you with horror.
It’s not even the worst you can find. You snorted at his face.
I am horrified. None of them actually find love, am I right?
Yep. I mean I don’t really know since I’ve never watched it.
Then why do they call it "love" island? They’re not even on an island! Is that what young people think love is?
Hum… You really thought about this one. I don’t really now. I mean, I think our vision of love might be different than our parent’s but… We still believe in soulmates so… I mean some do.
You don’t? His full attention was on you now.
You cleared your throat. I don’t think we only have one soulmate out there. Because what are the chances we do actually meet them? None. I like the idea of having certain persons with whom I feel like I belong. Not necessarily romantically, but you know… You explained with your hands.
That’s a really great point of view. It actually makes sense.
Thanks, I guess? You laughed softly. What about you?
I don’t know if your dad told you but I was married.
I knew. You were wearing a ring when we first met, but you never brought up any partner, so I just… understood.
She died and I felt like what was left of me died with her. He took a deep breath. You know, when you saw and did the things that I did you- your brain switches. The world, people- you see everything differently. That’s why a lot of us descend into hell when we come back. But she- He swallowed. She was my lighthouse in the middle of the storm. I felt invincible when I was with her. And then… then she passed and- I couldn’t even describe how everything collapsed. I collapsed. He looked in your eyes now. One time, right after my shift, Robby- the day attending and a close friend- found me on the roof. You froze. I was so close to- He cleared his throat to hide his voice breaking. He was there for me. After that I started therapy, and I think I can say I’m doing better, or at least I’m on the right path and-
He was cut short by you when you threw your arms around him and hugged him tight. He didn’t move for a minute until his brain reconnected and he put his arms around you.
I’m okay now. He whispered in your hair.
Jack… You’re so brave… You told him, your voice muffled in his T-shirt.
We all are. You raised your head to look at him, and one of his hands fell on your cheek. You are too.
You don’t know if it was the way he said it. Or that it was late at night. Or that you had a really nice evening with him, acting as if you were more than your father’s friend and his daughter. Like it was possible. You were so close, so close. His eyes dropped to your lips at the same time as yours. Suddenly there were no barriers anymore.
You don’t know who closed the gap or who did what, but it felt good. It felt right. You felt as if you belonged there on the couch, in Jack’s arms, on Jack’s lap, with Jack in your room.
It went from zero to a hundred in so little time. He was the combustible you were the flame.
That night, you fell asleep with your head on Jack’s naked chest, his arms wrapped around you and his lips on your head.
~~~
You woke up with a hard wall behind you and a weight over your stomach. You frowned, keeping your eyes closed, and tried to fall back asleep. But when said hard wall behind started moving, you tensed, opening wide your eyes. Shit.
The events of the previous night came back in your fogged brain, and your cheeks heated at the memories. Well, shit.
You turned around in his grip to face him and met his already opened eye.
Hi. You whispered.
Hi. Jack pushed a strand of hair behind your ear.
It’s only when you hear the sound of a door closing outside that you both shoot up, sitting wide-eyed like deer caught in car lights.
Shit they’re already back! Jack shouted in a whisper, getting up and almost falling since you had helped him take off his prosthesis.
Are you okay? You asked him, sitting on your knees on the bed.
Yeah- He looked you up and down, eyes becoming darker. He shook his head, looking around to find his clothes. Have you seen my shirt?
Uh… You looked down at what you were wearing. I did.
He stared at it longer than he should have, the sight of your form in his clothes made his brain fog up. You know what? Keep it. He told you, starting to put back his prosthesis on.
You sure?
Oh yeah. He nodded with vigour. It fits you way better than it fits me.
For a few seconds you stayed like that, staring at each other with stupid smiles on your faces. It was only when you heard noise at the bottom of the stairs that you both went back to running. Jack ran to the door, putting his hand on the doorknob before turning away and coming to kiss you on the forehead.
I will see you around. He whispered against your head before going back to his room.
You fall back on your bed, a stupid smile on your lips.
~~~
When you finally decided to go downstairs after a well-needed shower, you did so slowly, not sure if the three other men had gone back to sleep.
In the kitchen, everyone was already seated around the table, breakfast laid out on the wood. You looked at Jack, who was already smirking at you.
Here she is! Your father exclaimed, jumping on his feet to hug you.
Hi, Dad. How are you guys? And where does that come from? You asked them as you nodded to the food on the table.
Well, since you’ve been cooking for most of the week and you’re still on vacation, we thought that maybe we could bring something so you wouldn’t have to cook anything.
Thank you! But y’all should know by now that I love cooking, and it’s really not a problem.
We know. Steve told you, patting you on the arm. For what it's worth, I prefer your oatmeal.
Thank you.
The rest of the day passed slowly, made of laughter, discussion about the future, and jokes about old stories.
~~~
The sun was setting over the mountains, a light breeze falling on the valley. You were sitting outside with the four other men, laughing at a story your dad was telling his friend.
I will always remember the face he made when I opened the door instead of you. The poor boy almost passed out right there, on the porch. He laughed, whipping tears from his eyes.
It was prom! You exclaimed. I told you to not do that and to wait for me to come down, but you didn't listen to me. It's a miracle he didn't leave.
What was his name again?
Parker. He was a football player in the high school team. The other men winced. No, he was actually kinda sweet for a seventeen-year-old boy.
Sweet?! He broke up with you right before your camping trip. Marc reminded you.
Actually, he didn't. He just... Moved on with another person. Without telling me. You recalled, laughing softly at the memory. I terrified him when I found him kissing some other girl in the tent.
I knew he was bad news. Like every other boy you brought back.
You snorted. Jeez, dad, I'm sorry for having such bad taste.
The only exception was Jacob. I liked that kid, he was serious.
Now you were fully laughing. Jacob?! He might have been the worse of them all.
What do you mean? Kenny asked since he had met Jacob when you brought him home once.
He was... You searched for the right words, insults only coming to your mind. Selfish. Deeply self-centered. You remember the award I won when I participated in this competition last year? Marc nodded. I told you he couldn't come because he had a family emergency. In fact he just... Didn't want to come. He said he was too tired from work, which he did from home, by the way. Our whole relationship was like that. I made the efforts, he returned nothing.
That asshole!
You say it, Marc. Kenny nodded his agreement. I knew something was up when you brought him home and he kept turning the attention on himself.
You need someone better. Your father told you seriously.
Yeah. Someone like... Kenny looked around, you could see the gear turning in his head, and you were already prepping yourself for what was about to come when his gaze stopped on Jack. Like Jack! That made him raise his head to the sound of his name.
What? Your father burst out laughing. He's too old! No, she needs someone her age. Maybe with Jack's qualities, though.
Your dad didn't notice the way your expression fell, nor how Jack tensed. He was completely unaware of the way you looked at each other, dark shadows on your faces.
No offense, man.
None taken. You're right, she deserves better. He said it while looking at you, his eyes never leaving yours.
I guess you're right. You sighed, letting your head fall back and closing your eyes.
~~~
It was the last night before you had to fly back home, and you found yourself at the same spot. Outside by the pool, under the moon. Everyone had gone to sleep, knowing they had to wake up early to bring you to the airport.
Your mind kept drifting to what your dad said, to Jack's answer... You did not talk at all after that, too busy to pack your stuff or to organise the next time you will come to see your father. The tension was palpable between the two of you. Dark clouds announcing a storm on the horizon.
You heard the door open but kept your eyes in front of you, fully aware of who could be up at this hour. You followed the noise of his steps on the gravel, of his clothes, when he came to sit besides you.
He was silent for a few minutes, surely trying to find the right to begin the painful conversation you needed to have.
He is right.
I know. You shighed, looking down at your thighs.
I would be a fool to keep you to myself when you could do... Be so many more things. You're only twenty-nine. Not even at the half of your life, and I don't want to be the selfish bastard who keeps you from growing into the person you want to be. He paused, waiting for you to look at him. I don't regret anything that happened.
Me neither. You looked at him. I really like you, Jack.
I really like you too, angel.
It sucks to be us.
It does. He nodded, pained.
I should go to bed. I'm leaving early tomorrow. You got up slowly, not really wanting to go.
Come here. He waved you to come to him, hugging you tight when you were at arm's reach. You're going to be the best chef Pittsburgh has ever seen. He whispered in your head and planted a kiss there.
I really hope so. You looked up at his face.
I know so. He affirmed, holding you by your shoulders.
He watched you leave, hoping you wouldn't turn around and see his face. The next morning, you shared a quick hug, and he stared at the car until he was sure he couldn't see it anymore, Kenny's hand patting him on the back.
~~~
Two months later.
You were standing besides Emily, your assistant chef, who was lying in a bed in the Emergency Departement, waiting to be seen. She had been burned on the forearm by boiling oil as she was cooking one plate for a client. The burn was too important for her to finish the service, and you insisted on accompanying her to the ED, knowing you could be replaced for the rest of your shift. There was only one hour left, and few clients were going to order anyway.
I'm sure it's not that bad. She assured you, still holding her arm. It doesn't even hurt that much. You should go home.
You're a bad liar, Em. I'm not leaving you alone.
Tom's going to be here any minute now.
Em. You warned her, begging her to shut up.
~~~
Jack was just coming out of the trauma room after saving once again the life of a patient. That one had been hard, the man kept coding. The relief he felt was short-lived when he saw the state of the ED. This shift wasn't a slow one at all, people kept coming in and very few left.
The doctor disinfected his hands with hand sanitizer, walking to the next room where another patient was waiting for care. The curtains were closed, and when he opened them, he froze as he came face-to-face with you.
He called out your name, quickly approaching and taking your arm in his to scan for any injuries. You didn't even have time to say anything, Jack going full doctor mode on you.
Jack. You called him softly. I'm fine. It's not for me. You told him as you pointed at Emily, who was enjoying way too much the show.
Sorry. He apologized, stepping back. What brings you here?
I mildly burnt myself at work.
She received boiling hot oil on the forearm. You corrected, watching Jack take her arm in his hand to inspect the injury.
You were right to bring her here. He said as another doctor entered the room with Tom, Emily's boyfriend. Dr. Ellis, could you please take care of her? He asked the woman who just came in.
Sure. She agreed, turning away to gather the stuff she needed.
Jack turned to you when Tom and Emily started talking. How long have you been waiting?
You looked down at your watch. Something like five hours, maybe a little more? We arrived at almost two in the morning. It was close to seven now.
You were working until two? He asked as he typed something on the computer in the room.
Yeah, it's one of the restaurant's "special night". We stay open longer than usual since there is a festival not so far from it.
You should've called me, you wouldn't have waited.
I wasn't sure I could. And I didn't know where you worked. You whispered as you watched the other doctor start to take care of Emily.
How did you guys come here? Tom asked, knowing you hated driving in Pittsburgh.
We took an Uber. Emily answered.
Don't worry about me, guys. I will take another one to go home. You reassured them.
No, we can-
I can drive you home, if you want. Jack intervened. I'm done in about twenty minutes.
You opened your mouth, but no sound came out, as always, that man managed to steal your thoughts.
That would be great! Emily answered for you. She has been up for almost twenty-four hours now. I don't want her to wait around for me to be done here.
He nodded and smiled at your friend before turning back to you. You're okay with that? You nodded. I will come get you when I'm done then.
~~~
Jack did everything he could to actually respect the twenty minutes he told you he needed to finish up. Of course, the ED wasn’t a place where you could always finish on time, and two traumas arriving at the same time didn’t make it easy.
You okay, brother? Robby asked as he arrived to start his shift.
Mmh. He nodded, finishing some chart as quickly as he could.
He has a special someone in North 15. Lena replied instead with a big smirk on her face.
Robby turned his attention to him. Who?
Walk with me? His friend nodded and joined him. Marc’s daughter.
No way! Robby shouted a little bit louder than he intended to gathering some attention from nurses.
Yes way. She brought one of her friends with second-degree burns on her forearm. Her friend’s boyfriend’s here, so I’m taking her home.
To your home or her home?
Hers. His steps faltered just a bit. I think.
You know what you have to do. He clapped him on the shoulder. You better not come back miserable tonight.
I’m off tonight.
Another reason. The brunette smiled at his friend. Don’t fuck this up. Robby warned him, stopping in front of the room you were waiting in.
Dr. Eillis came out at the same time, whistling lowly at Jack. She’s hot. If you’re not interested, I am. She told the attendings receiving a dark look from Abbot and an amused one from Robby.
Abbot looked seriously at Robby, knowing damn well what his friend had in mind. No.
I want to see her. He told him as he pushed the door opened. Good morning, I’m Dr Robinavitch, everyone calls me Dr. Robby, I’m the day shift attending. He presented himself when Jack didn’t.
Hi. You waved at him.
How are you feeling, Emily? He asked, coming to stand next to the bed.
It still hurts a bit, but Dr. Eillis did a great job.
Great, we’re not going to keep you much longer, we just need to update your charts. It shouldn’t be long. Dr. Abbot and Eillis are done for the night, but don’t worry, you’re in good hands.
Abbot rolled his eyes but secretly thanked his friend for saying that. He approached you. You’re okay to go? You nodded. Follow me. He told you, brushing his hand on your lower back.
You followed him through the ED, receiving a few smiles on the way to the lockers. You brushed it off, putting on the fact that nurses here must be really kind.
You watched Jack taking his stuff from his lockers, not even changing from his scrubs. He smiled softly at you as he guided you back in the ED, his hand still on your back.
Have a great day. Robby threw at you both when you walked past him, and then he was flipped off by Jack.
In the car you realized that it might have been a mistake. The silence was a proof of that. You didn’t know what to say to him.
I need your address. The gray-haired man told you, driving out of the parking lot.
Oh yeah, sorry. You gave him your address and waited for him to enter on his phone. He never did.
He cleared his throat. God, that was painful. You had a very low tolerance for awkward situations, and right now you just wanted to jump out of the moving car.
So… How have you been? He asked offhandedly, checking his rearview mirrors.
Great actually. Your voice was so high, you could’ve popped a balloon. They let me add some of my own creation to the menu. People love it.
Yeah? That’s fantastic. Jack replied happily. I’m proud of you.
Thanks. What about you? Still working night shifts at the ED?
I think I will never be able to quit. He shook his head with a small smile.
Was that the friend you told me about?
Robby? Yeah. That man can be an asshole, but deep down, he is a kind man. He’s just putting a hard facade to scare people away.
He seemed nice.
To you? Yeah, I’m not surprised about that. Jack stopped the car as the light turned red.
What do you mean? You fully turned in his direction.
He’s heard about you. Jack confessed, looking shyly at you.
You’ve talked about me to your friends? You were surprised now.
Just him. When I came home two months ago I was… Not how I should’ve been after two weeks of vacation. He knew something was up and made me spit it out. He paused. I’m sorry if it makes you feel uncomfortable.
No, no, it’s alright. I just didn’t think you were going to think that much about me after this trip.
You’ve made it really hard not to. He almost whispered, parking in front of your apartment complex.
You didn’t know what to say, so you kept your mouth shut. You looked around you for your bag, eyes widening when you realized you didn’t have it with you.
Fuck me. You said with closed eyes and banging your head against the headrest.
What’s wrong?
I don’t have my bag.
You’ve left it at the ED?
No, at work. And I can’t get it until tomorrow since I don’t have the keys and the restaurant is closed. Jack pulled back on the road. What are you doing?
Bringing you home. It’s already late… or early… I’m not leaving you on the curb when you haven’t slept in twenty-four hours. I have a spare bedroom. Don’t worry. He added when he saw you biting your lips anxiously.
Oh no, I wasn’t- Thank you.
Don’t mention it.
In truth, Jack was the happiest man. He was bringing you home, to his home. Which meant you were going to stay around longer. He was so grateful for your forgotten bag and your friend Emily.
~~~
He walked you to his apartment, which was situated in a nice part of the city. He unlocked the door, walking in first, and dropped his bag in the doorway.
Welcome ho- To my place. He corrected himself quickly. Do you want to eat something? Shower?
I already ate at the restaurant.
It must have been at least twelve hours ago.
I’m not hungry. I won’t say no to a shower, though.
Sure, come on. He told you, already walking to his room to get you a change of clothes.
His room was large, mostly coloured in shades of blue. There was a picture of him and Robby on his nightstand and another one with a beautiful woman smiling at him. His bed could fit at least three people and was perfectly made, not a wrinkle on the sheets. Military perfection, you guessed.
You watched him as he walked to his closet, opened the doors and searched through his clothes for something to give you. Jack doubted he had your size in anything, so he opted to give a simple black shirt with a pair of boxers.
Do you want sweets too? He asked you, eyes kept on the pile of clothes.
It’s okay. It’s still hot. If that’s okay with you. You quickly added, not wanting to make him uncomfortable when he had already offered you to stay at his place.
No complaints on my side. He still wouldn’t look your way, and the anxious feeling in you wouldn’t die down.
You followed as he walked to another room, your clothes still in his hands. Entering the bathroom, he put them on the counter neatly.
Are you sure it’s okay that I’m staying here? You blurted out, not able to stop your thoughts.
His whole body stopped working, and the doctor raised his eyes to look at your face in the mirror.
Of course. Believe me, I truly have nothing against it.
You’re sure? Because you seem so… tensed.
That’s because I’m trying to prevent myself from saying something that might make you uncomfortable.
Oh. You replied dumbfounded. Maybe you should. You said lowly, so lowly that he almost missed it.
It’s better if I don’t for now. Jack answered, turning around and pinning you with a look as he walked past you. You’re tired. His hand brushed your arm as he left the room, closing the door behind him.
In the shower, your mind kept drifting to the way he looked at you, the way his voice sounded. And you never wished that hard for him to join you under the water.
~~~
You walked into the living room where Jack was sitting on his couch, his prosthetic leg resting against the coffee table. You joined him, keeping a safe distance between you.
He was wrong. He blurted out, keeping his face towards the opposite wall. He was so fucking wrong.
You didn’t need to ask, already knowing he was talking about your father.
At the same time he wasn’t. I’m fucking old. And you have your whole life in front of you. But fuck not being in it might actually kill me.
It was the first time he so openly addressed the fact that he wanted you. Not just for one night but for way longer. Your lack of answers didn’t ease his mind, he was now panicking he had said too much.
Fuck, I’m sorry- It sounds so fucking creepy. Just forget-
He was interrupted by your lips on his, arms locked around his neck and a new weight on his lap. He froze just for an instant before returning the kiss with a newfound strength.
He broke the kiss, holding your face with his hands on each side of your neck. Are you sure? Because I’m not sure I will deal well with you slipping through my fingers again.
I won’t. You shook your head rapidly. I’m going to stay right here. You gave him a peck. With you.
You shrieked when he got up with you in his arms, after putting back on his prostethic, carrying you in his bedroom. He deposited you softly in the middle of his bed, stepping back to admire the sight. You did the same, your eyes raking his whole body.
Come here. You held your hand for him to take, which he did, and you pulled him into a sitting position. You descend on your knees at the foot of the bed, pulling the right side of his pants up. Teach me how it works. You ask, nodding to his prosthesis.
At this moment, when those words left your mouth, he knew it. He wouldn’t survive you. Something was constantly pulling him towards you, a magnetic field only you could see.
The morning ended with Jack teaching you how his leg worked, how to take it off and how to put it back on. But it was so much more than that. It was a commitment you were making to one another.
You fell asleep in each other’s arms, smiles on your faces, finally feeling like you belonged.
EHEHEHE it's my longest one!! Please feel free to tell me if it was good so that MAYBE I will write a sequel or something.
Cheers !

Anyway that man has a grip on me so here is a little something about him. Please mind that the topic of this oneshot is a difficult one and might be triggering for some person.

You hear the keys turn into the lock of your front door. With your couch being placed at the center of your apartment, you could hear anything. Frowning, you raised your head from the pillow you had retrieved from your bedroom to take a look at the clock on the wall. It was closer to sunrise than sunset. At least eight hours have passed since Jack had left in a hurry.
One look at him had you on your feet, running to him. You’ve seen the news, you followed the reporters all evening and a good part of the night to be reassured. Little to say it wasn’t the case.
A mass shooting. Even if you weren’t a doctor, you knew how bad it must have been in the ER. Jack raised his head to look at you, a defeated expression on his face. You stopped in front of him and waited for him to say or do something.
With a deep sigh he let his head fall on your shoulder, his arms coming to wrap around your back and a hand on the back of your head. You hugged him back tighter, feeling the tremor in his back.
I’m here. You whispered against his shirt, caressing his back.
Those two simple words make the dam break, a sob coming from the deepest part of his chest, shaking his whole body. His legs almost gave out, and you almost lost your balance.
Okay. Let’s get you in the shower. You told him, pushing him slightly away in order to assess in what state he had come home.
You couldn’t see any trace of blood on his clothes. He must’ve changed before coming home. But when you walked him towards the bathroom and he came into the light, crimson stains were left on the skin on his neck, his hands were so red and dry because of all the sanitiser he has been using, and the dark circles under his eyes painted him as someone who was close to collapsing.
You helped him out of his scrubs, pushing him to sit on a stool you had dragged from the kitchen. You knew his prosthesis must have left his leg in pain since you knew he didn’t sit down for several hours.
Jack watched you take it off, your soft hands getting to work to detach it from him. You scanned his face the whole time, searching for any sign of pain or discomfort.
When all of his clothes were off, you turned on the water, wanting it to be at least a little warm before helping him in the shower. Testing the temperature and finding it okay, you helped him inside, getting your own clothes wet in the process.
You knew he couldn’t stay up. He was already too tired to keep his head up. So you helped him to sit on the tiled floor, joining him down there. You let the water glide on his skin, starting with the top of his shoulders before letting it fall on his back. After rinsing off most of the crimson you could see, you took your body wash and started applying it on his skin, massaging the knots you could feel.
Relaxing wouldn’t be the right word for his reaction. How could he relax after everything he had seen? But he was less strained, the look of pain in his eyes less visible.
Could you take a deep breath for me, honey? You asked him, still washing the day off of his skin.
He didn’t answer, but his shoulders rose as he inhaled and fell down as he pushed the air out.
Good. Do it again, my love. I’m right here. You assured him, getting up to turn off the stream of water.
Jack had fallen back into himself. You could see it in his glassy eyes and his stoic expression. Now wasn’t the time to speak. The doctor wouldn’t either way. You just needed him to feel your presence, your touch, in order to make him come back to you.
Helping him out of the shower and drying him with the fluffiest towel you could find in the bathroom, you made sure he wasn’t cold. You kissed the palm of his hand before exiting the room to get some clothes and came back to find him in the exact same position as you left him.
When he was dressed, he rose on his foot, hugging you tight against his chest. Jack’s breathing was better, his heartbeat more even. The storm hadn’t passed but was starting to calm down.
You walked him to your shared bed, helping him inside and putting the cover on him before going to get a glass of water. After turning all of the lights off, you climbed beside him, and he immediately turned to lay his head on your chest, his arm coming to wrap around your stomach. You put one of your hands in his hair, the other on his back.
Jack took another deep breath, closing his eyes. He could still hear and see the screams, the chaos, the blood and death. Images he would never forget. It wasn’t the Middle East, but it was as close as it could get. It shook him to the core.
It was like war. He said quietly, his voice dry since he didn’t speak for a long time. You tightened your grip on him. We ran out of blood quick… We had to give ours. It was…chaos… We lost six persons.
And how many did you save?
106.
You nodded, waiting for him to continue.
Jake lost his girlfriend. Robby couldn’t save her and the boy… Well he blames it on him. I didn’t see him freak out, and yet I know he did. He shook his head. Fuck, we thought the shooter was headed our way. I- He stopped himself, breathed in, and continued- I did things I never thought I would do. Things you’re not supposed to do.
Were they the only things you could do in order to save these people?
Yes.
Then I would say that you did a good job.
I would’ve never admitted that to any of them, but fuck- I was fucking terrified.
And all these kids… First day and mass shooting… God. He groaned. Dana got kicked in the face by a patient. Apparently someone brought rats in I- He shook his head, trying to chase the memories away. Sometimes this job is so fucking messy.
I know. You kissed the top of his head. I’m so proud of you. You all did your best tonight. I know that, most of people out there know that.
People are getting more and more violent. They are desperate because they’re waiting for hours before getting seen. They’re mad because sometimes they don’t have access to the care they need because their insurance doesn’t want to cover it. Of course they fucking lose their shit. I can’t blame them.
He fists his hand in your shirt. You grabbed it, intertwining your fingers with his.
What you- and your team- have been through tonight, it’s fucking traumatising. There is no other word to describe it. You are marked for life with those memories. But you did best. You did what you could do with what you had. And the only thing we can hope is for this tragedy to open some motherfucking eyes about the state of our medical system.
You waited until he looked at you. Jack, I might not be a doctor, or a nurse or any of these really important people that work with you, but I know you’re fucking good at what you do. Such as Robby and any other doctors and medical professionals that were there tonight. All these victims, you gave them their best chance to survive. You are not responsible for this tragedy. You might have their blood on your hands, but you aren’t the one who hit them. You tried to save them- hell you did for most of them.
You’re one of the most empathetic doctor in this city. And I am so sorry for everything you’ve seen tonight. Nobody deserves what happened.
He tightened his embrace. I’m here. I’m not going anywhere. I love you. You repeated again and again.
That night, neither Jack nor you fell asleep. You refused to close an eye, deciding to stay up until either exhaustion got the best of him or the sun rose. You stayed entangled in each other, the silence of the night weighing on both your shoulders.
The doctor was grateful to have you. He knew that you were right. But the shock and the fatigue kept his guilt alive in his mind. So he did what he always does when the ocean seems to drown him: he holds on to you, his lifeline, and lets you carry him to calmer waters.
Okay so I just watched the first season of The Pitt. I discovered something about me I didn’t know…
Safe to say I’ll watch season 2 🫦
Might even write something here… iykyk

07/15, The Strip, Fremont street
You woke up early again because you didn't close the curtains before going to sleep. After stretching, you grab your phone on the nightstand and frown at the notification from your boss. Or you ex-boss. He wanted to know when you were going to give back your keys.
Yeah, that is another secret you kept from your friends. Even Natasha. Truth to be told, they thanked you for your work and showed you the door. "Budget cut", they said. It's weird because your all-female team was the only one affected by those cuts. You tried to let it slide because you didn't want to ruin the trip. But now that you're thinking back about it, you considered suing them for the way they treated your team.
Anyway, that happened the day before the departure, and you kept it for yourself, not wanting to worry Nat about that. She noticed that something was off when you came home that night, you brushed her worries off, simply saying that you were tired. She let it go but still stared at you as if you were going to break down. Maybe you were.
You shook your head. You were on vacation, these problems will have to wait for when you get back. You couldn't do anything about them anyway. And you were surely not going to ruin your well-deserved vacation because of some morons who don't realize they are in deep shit now that they fired the only working team of the whole company.
Deciding that staying in bed wasn't that great for your mental health, you got up and walked downstairs. The whole house was silent only for the slow buzz of the bridge in the open kitchen. Even Steve wasn't up yet.
A glass of water in the hand, you walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows and looked at the pool. Maybe you could go swim a little before the others got up. You still had three hours before you had to leave, after all. That's what you did, going back to your room to change in your swimsuit before going outside and getting in the water, enjoying the calm and silence while no one was up.
Little did you know that Bucky was already up, and his room had a perfect view of the pool. He watched you swim from one end of the pool to the other, regrets in his eyes.
In your third year of college, you and Bucky decided to take a membership at the pool not so far from campus. You tried to convince Natasha to come with you, but she shot you a glance as if you were fucking crazy. Steve had agreed to sometimes join you but confessed that swimming wasn't necessarily what he preferred. It was just you and the brunette.
Swimming was a way for you to momentarily forget about your exams, about the papers you needed to write, or about the grades you were about to have. Diving in the cold water, feeling your breath shorten and concentrating only on going forward was a great solution for your anxiety. And Bucky was always here to make you laugh.
You didn't talk much, going from one end of the pool to the other and taking a break after a certain time. He always swam more than you, being an athlete and all that. Most of the time after you were done, you would go sit on one of the benches near the place he was swimming and watch him pass in front of you.
If you were completely honest, it was mesmerizing. The way his biceps would contract, how his back looked after every session you did, and how his blue eyes were almost matching the color of the chlorinated water.
You were so lost in your thoughts that you didn't realize Bucky had stopped swimming in front of you. He splashed you, and you shrieked, getting weird glances from the few students that were swimming past him.
You like what you see? He smirked at you from the pool.
Mmmh. Have seen better. You replied with sarcasm until he splashed you again.
You watched as he pushed on his arms to get out of the pool, water sliding off his shoulders and down his- Woah. You cleared your throat, looking away. Bucky smirked even harder.
He took off his swim cap as he walked to you, shaking his head slightly. The brunette sat down next to you, relaxing against the backrest and spreading a little his legs.
Don't manspread next to me, please. You told him, pushing on his knee that was resting against yours.
Oh come on, I'm not manspreading. I'm just getting comfortable.
Don't. We have to go. You said, still refusing to look at him.
He turned his head toward you. Why? You got a date or something? Your lack of answer was all he needed. With who?!
That's none of your business. You replied as you got up to go take a shower. Bucky followed you running.
Come on, angel. Since when did you stop telling me everything?
You rolled your eyes, continuing to walk. He grabbed your wrist and turned you softly around, calling your name.
Who are you going out with? He asked again. For safety reasons, I need to know.
With Frank. You crossed your arms over your chest as you watched his confused expression.
Castle?
Yes.
Oh hell no! He exclaimed, spooking the woman walking past you.
You resumed your walking and he followed.
Come on, angel. You can't go out with him! It's a miracle he didn't drop out yet.
So what, James? Not everyone likes college. And I don't care, I'm not looking for my future husband.
Then why are you going out with him?
Have you seen him?! That man is sex on legs, and that's exactly what I'm looking for.
Sex on- Oh my- I don't want to hear about that!
You asked. You told him.
You know there are others ways that exist now, you don't need to get with the first man you find to get some steam off.
I'm going to smack you Bucky. You made your way to the women locker rooms.
And if you really need a man, you can ask me! He called out with a shit eating grin as you shook your head, blush creeping on your cheeks.
You took the time to enjoy the pool and the first ray of sunshine for a while before you made your way back upstairs to shower and change. When you return to the living room, Bucky, Steve and Natasha are already up, bickering about something, like they always do.
You smiled at the scene, coming to sit next to Natasha, who took your hand in hers. What are you guys fighting about now?
Whether sleeping with someone from the office is wrong or not. She told you. They both think it is while I...
You already done it. I know, Nat.
You can have big trouble with HR, you know. Bucky warned her. Things like that never end well. Your eyes met before you turned your attention back to the woman sitting beside you.
She waved with her hand. Sharon and I agreed to keep things discreet for now.
So it's not just a one-night stand! Steve exclaimed, surprised considering Natasha wasn't looking to settle down.
Well... We're just getting to know each other, don't start planning the wedding just yet. You smiled at this, happy your friend finally found someone good enough for her.
Should we wake Sam up? You asked them, not sure if the man was already up.
Yeah we-
I will take care of it. Bucky said abruptly, standing up as his chair made a scratching sound on the floor. I missed scaring him up.
The three of you watched him fill a glass with water before climbing the stairs quickly. A few seconds later you heard a piercing scream coming from upstairs, the sign that Sam was up. You all laughed quietly until you decided it was time to get your suitcases back in the car.
Steve and Bucky took all of the suitcases down, playing Tetris to fit them in the trunk as you and Nat cleaned the kitchen while Sam was cleaning things upstairs. When all of you were done, you exited the house, letting Bucky be the last one to close the door.
The blonde and the redhead were in a deep conversation about a book they both read and on which they disagreed.
It was marvelous! Steve cried out.
It was boring. Three hundred pages of nothing. It's a miracle I could finish it. She replied, climbing in the backseat.
Do you mind if I take your spot until Bucky and I switch? He asked you, and you assured him that it was okay before realizing that Sam was already sitting in third place. Which meant you had to sit next to Bucky in the passenger seat.
He was already installed, adjusting the rearview mirrors and setting up the itinerary on his phone. You climbed besides him, putting your water bottle in its spot and making sure you had everything in your bag. He watched you from the corner of his eye, smiling at how you were still as mindful of everything as you were.
Comfortable? He asked you as Steve and Natasha were still debating over their book. You just nodded, and he took off.
~~~
You have been on Route 66 for two hours now. You could tell that Bucky was starting to get tired, and you suspected he hadn't slept that much the night prior. You looked back in front of you and noticed a sign indicating a gas station not so far down the road.
Hey, can we stop there? You asked him and could see he was relieved to finally be able to give the wheel to Steve.
As the car came to a stop, you looked to the back seat to realize that Sam was sleeping soundly, his head against the window and his yellow Labubu in his hands.
Should we wake him up? You asked Natasha, who just shrugged and waited for Steve to get out of the car so she could too.
Let him sleep. I will leave the AC so we don't find him like a roasted chicken. Bucky told you, taking his phone and stepping away from the car to make a call. Hey, Bec, you called.
Rebecca. She was Bucky's sister, a few years his cadette. You loved her, even if she could be a snob. She had finished her studies in fashion and was starting a job at a big company. You tried to follow what she was doing the best you could since you didn't have Bucky to update you anymore.
In all the things he has done and known, Bucky was the proudest of his sister. He loved telling you everything she did in Los Angeles, then in New York for a few months. You were the first one, after Steve, of course, to meet her. She was a spitfire, never shutting up about the "fashion massacre", as she liked to call it, that Bucky was committing every day.
She reminded you of Natasha. Actually, they really hit off when they met, already talking about the last fashion trend and how they couldn't understand how Bucky could date that many women when he wasn't making any efforts.
You suspected that she knew about Bucky and you. Rebecca never spoke about it or asked you questions, but sometimes, you could feel her eyes linger a bit longer when you were talking with her brother.
You missed her. You shook your head at the memory and made your way inside of the gas station to buy something to eat. Natasha already had her arms full, ordering Steve to take more of the candies she liked.
You sure you're going to have enough? You asked her with sarcasm, to which she rolled her eyes and barked at Steve to listen to her.
You took some twizzlers and walked to the fridge. You were trying to decide what to take when you felt someone stopping beside you.
They have slushies, you know. Bucky told you conspiratorially, smiling warmly at you. One of those rare smiles again.
Do they, now? Your lips raised slightly.
It would be a shame to miss this opportunity.
Oh my God- Bucky slow down! You laughed as you tried to follow Bucky through the crowd of students who had just got off the bus. He was holding your hand, pulling you inside the gas station.
You weren't so far from New York, returning from a student trip you took with some of the athletes of your college. You had the chance to be able to leave with them since you were in charge of taking pictures for the student organization you were a part of. Bucky was the only one of your friends to be an athlete, so it was just the two of you.
The bus had stopped at a gas station for the last stop before finally arriving in the city. Apparently, the sandwiches you shared with the brunette weren't enough since he was already walking down the aisle and taking chips and candies from the shelves.
You weren't looking in front of you and didn't realize that Bucky had stopped, making you crash into his back. Ouch. Buck...? Are you okay? You asked him, worry creeping in you at the weird face he was making.
Angel...
What?
Is this a dream?
What- Did you take Julian's edibles by any chance?
What? He turned his head to look at you. No! You know I don't get high when you're around. I want to be on my best behavior.
Then why are you acting like a child who had too much sugar?
Because they have slushies! God it's been so long since I had one. He grabbed two cups. What taste should we get?
You're paying?
Of course, I'm paying, Angel. I'm not a caveman. He looked offended by your question.
That night, you arrived in New York with a stomach full of slushies and a sleeping Bucky on your shoulder.
Do you want one? He asked you, already walking to the machine.
Only if you get one. You smiled at him as he took two cups and filled them with the savors you used to take.
After paying for your "groceries" you returned to the car and sat in the back seat with Natasha, leaving your seat for Bucky since Steve was the one driving. She noticed the slushy you were holding and smiled at you, relieved to see that your relationship with the brunette was starting to get better.
The rest of the drive passed slowly as you contemplated the landscapes passing by your window. Natasha had her head on your shoulder and was sleeping, AirPods on with your shared playlist.
You woke her up gently when you arrived in the city, knowing she wanted to see the buildings by day. You were all kind of mesmerized by the city and how it was built, hence the silence in the car.
Finally, Steve parked in the hotel's parking lot. Since you were staying for one night only, you all agreed on staying at one of the most iconic hotels in the city: Caesars Palace. Sam and Natasha were in charge of getting the keys for your rooms.
Since you knew your friends, you were aware of the fact that them in Vegas would mean them meeting people and maybe taking them in their rooms. That's why you all decided to book one room each, just so you wouldn't prevent anyone from having real fun.
After all, it was for one night only.
~~~
After taking some time to change clothes, you all met again in the lobby. For once, Sam was the first one there, too eager to go see the city. You waited for Natasha before going to meet the others downstairs.
So I see that things are getting better, uh? She told you with a knowing look.
We're both making an effort to make this trip as great as it deserves to be. Nothing more.
You sure about that?
Yes. You looked her in the eyes. After this trip, things will go back as they were. No contact.
If that's what you want. She put her arm around your shoulder. Now, I got us invites to one of the best parties of the city.
How?
I've got a friend here. She and her twin brother are kinda the hot stuff here. They own several clubs and bars.
Do I know her?
I might have talked about her... She thought. I'm not sure, though.
Well I can't wait. You told her as the elevator's door opened on the Loby.
The three men were already waiting for you. You approached them, and Sam took Nat's place, with his own arm around your shoulder.
So what do you have in store for us, my little ball of sunshine?
You raised a brow at the nickname. All that? He shrugged. The Bellagio Fountains as we look for something to eat? Like we could go up the Strip to the fountains and then find something to eat before going in the Freemont street. After that we come back here, get changed, and go to Nat's friends' party.
Sounds like a plan to me. Sam told you, kissing your forehead and walking with you in front of the rest.
You ended up eating a smashed burger in a little place that wasn't as crowded as the other places up the strip. Afterwards, you all continued walking in The Strip to the Bellagio Fountains.
Sam was glued to your side all afternoon. Which wasn't that odd but still was a little bit strange. So as the others were walking around the fountains, you stayed behind with him, looking at him.
What?
What is going on? You asked him, linking your arm with his.
Nothing. He replied, looking everywhere but at you.
I know you, Sam. And considering you've been following me around all afternoon, there is obviously something you want to say but don't know how.
I caught Bucky on the phone this morning with this mystery Pepper and he was talking about "taking things to another level". Sam said, not taking any break between the words, which made it harder for you to understand everything.
Whoa, slow down. What?
Yeah, I went to his room to ask his advice for something, and he was on the phone. With her. They seemed to get along really well. Like too well.
You took a deep breathe. Okay, so what? You asked him.
I just thought you deserved to know... You know, considering everything that... Happened.
You started walking again. Nothing happened.
Yeah, sure. He rolled his eyes, following you. You know, you weren't the most discreet. We all kinda knew what was happening. He looked at Steve. Well, maybe not all of us... We just never said anything.
Nothing happened then, and nothing will happen now. Bucky and I are just... acquaintances. He whistled at that, you laughed. What?
He went from being your best friend to an acquaintance in a few years. He must have really fucked up, uh?
It's James Buchanan Barnes we're talking about. Of course he did. You smiled up at him. Come on, let’s get closer, I want to take pictures of you as it goes on. You nodded to the fountain.
He got closer to the fountain, standing up straight and looking at you with a frown. It made you laugh as you took pictures.
Sam, come on! Yes, just like that! You encouraged him as he cocked his hips to the side. You felt someone tap on your shoulder.
Excuse me? Asked a little old woman with a strong accent. German maybe. Do you want us to take pictures of the two of you together? She looked at Sam. I think he might need your help to pose well.
Yeah, you’re right. You gave her your phone. Thank you! You told her as you walked to Sam.
He put his hands on your waist, pulling you to him strongly. You laughed even harder as he made you turn on yourself.
The German couple took several pictures, encouraging you to make other poses. When you were done, you both walked back to them, and the woman handed you back your phone.
You make a beautiful couple. She complimented you.
Oh no, ma’am. We’re not together. Sam told her. We’re just friends.
Oh really? She seemed disappointed.
Well, actually… Sam told her. Be careful, don’t let him catch you, but the brunette standing near the car over there might kill me if I ever tried anything. Sam joked, watching Bucky, who was already staring at you with a frown.
They both turned round, very not discreetly, to look at him. Oh yes. You cannot mistake this look. She said, looking fondly at her husband. My Hans looked a little like him. The same stare.
You laughed awkwardly, looking at Sam to make him understand you were going to annihilate him. No, no. That man always is staring at people that way. It’s his thing.
I wouldn’t be so sure... Anyways, we have to find our guide. Have a great trip, my dears. She smiled brightly at the two of you before walking away.
Come on, we should go join the others before they scurry away.
You walked past Bucky, trying to ignore the way he was looking at Sam. As if he was going to jump him at any moment. Sam, on the other hand, looked at the brunette with a smirk. Knowing damn well he was pissing him off.
~~~
I'm really not feeling it. You told Natasha fearfully as a man was securing a harness around your thighs.
Babe, we're in Vegas for one night only! You have to do crazy shit once in a while!
You were currently waiting to go on the zip line, which went down Fremont Street. You never really like heights, even less when you were going to go floating down from 77 feet in the air. Natasha convinced you to try it with her, saying she really wanted to do it with you. You couldn’t resist her.
If I die, I will kill you, Natasha Romanov.
I love you too! She screamed as she jumped in the air, down the zip line.
I hate her. You screamed from the top of your lungs as you lunged forward, your feet in the void.
Everyone in the street looked up as you went flying over them, your scream making them smile or laugh. Steve was filming from under, laughing even harder as you started screaming at Natasha.
I hate you!
You screamed a little bit less as you looked to the roof, the screen changing of colors. The lights were beautiful, it made you feel as if you were in one of those 00s movies.
But then you saw that the zip line was almost done and started screaming again.
Natasha was already there and was waiting for you with her hands on her hips and a big smile on her lips. When your feet touched down you felt as if you were going to pass out.
Natasha caught you with her hands on your waist. See? You loved it!
I feel… I feel like I’m going to throw up. You told her, trying to make her feel bad for putting you through that.
Cut the crap. She laughed as she started taking her harness off.
After being released from your harnesses you joined, Steve in the street. He let you lay your weight on him, your hand in the middle of his back, his hand holding you up.
Are you okay, love? He looked down at you with a small smile on his lips.
I felt my soul leave my body. You replied, your feet not really doing a great job at supporting you.
Whoa. Careful, there. He caught you. I don’t think you want your pretty face to touch this ground.
He looked up as Bucky and Sam went flying over you. Sam was screaming too even after he made fun of you for being scared. He looked back at you and noticed that you were really pale.
Nat? She looked at him. Can you stay here until Sam and Buck arrive? I’m gonna find something for her to eat. He nodded at your form.
Oh shit, yeah. She nodded as she realized you weren’t that good. Do you want me to come with you or are you okay with Steve?
No, it’s alright. I’ve got my super soldier with me. You joked, still shaky.
The redhead watched you and the blonde leave, smiling softly at how caring Steve was with you.
Steve sat you down on a bench where a woman and her daughter were already sitting. He smiled at them and returned his attention to you.
Are you going to be okay to wait here until I get back with something sugary for you?
You nodded. I’m fine, Steve. Really. Go. You smiled at him and looked at him walking away, laughing softly as he turned around every few steps.
You found yourself a real gentleman. The woman who was sitting next to you said.
He is a really great man. You agreed, turning to her. Is this your daughter?
Yes. Her name is Laura. Say hi, baby.
Hello. The little girl told you.
You’re here on vacation? You asked her.
Sort of. We’re currently waiting for her brother to come back from the zip line. You made a face. Bad experience? She asked you.
You have no idea. I’m just not doing great with height and speed and basically the whole concept of a zip line.
She laughed. You tell me. I used Laura as an excuse so that he didn’t bring me with him up there.
I understand. Steve came back with a bag of candy. Oh my- you didn’t have to buy a kilo of candies!
I panicked. He kneeled in front of you. Here, eat some and drink afterwards. Steve handed you the bag.
Only if you take some too. Then you turned towards the mother and her daughter. Would you like some?
Yes please! Laura exclaimed, already coming to get some in her hand.
What do we say? Her mother asked her.
Thank you!
Yes thank you. It’s very kind of you. She saw her son. Oh, come on Laura, Bryan is here. She got up and took her hand. Have a great trip you two. The woman smiled at you knowingly before leaving her spot for Steve.
How are you feeling?
Better now. Thank you, Steve. You saw the others coming towards you.
Sam let himself fall besides you, immediately putting his hand in your bag. I saw the light. He said to no one in particular, looking straight ahead.
And you were calling her a chicken. Bucky mocked him before realizing how close you and Steve were sitting. A dark shadow fell upon his face.
Well, it’s time to go back to the hotel. We need to get ready for the party. She looked at you. Can you walk?
Yes, Steve took care of me. But I will never trust you ever again.
You all walked back to the hotel, Steve staying next to you in case you needed him. You shared the candies with everyone.
~~~
You were sitting on a chair in front of the windows of your room, Las Vegas' skyline in front of your eyes. Natasha was standing behind you, her hands in your hair, trying to find a great hairstyle for you. Soft music was playing on the speaker she took with her, and she made sure that the lights weren't too strong.
So... You started, eyes still on the window. Tell me more about this mysterious friend we're going to meet tonight.
She laughed softly. Well... Her name is Wanda, I met her when I did my internship in Boston. We were the only two women of the whole group, so obviously we gravitated towards each other. She brushed your hair.
And...?
And we started getting closer. Nothing serious though. When the internship ended, we decided to stay in contact. As friends.
Does Sharon know that you're going to see her?
Actually, Sharon met her.
And I didn't?! You exclaimed, turning around abruptly to face her.
You would've if you weren't always with a certain someone. She shut you up with that, and you returned to your previous position.
Well, I can't wait to meet her. What about her brother?
Truthfully, I've never met him. I just know his name is Pietro and that they are working together. But. She walked to the desk and took her phone before handing it out to you. I stalked him.
Damn! He's hot. You said, swiping through his social media.
Is he not?
It's totally Sam's type.
She rolled her eyes. Everyone is Sam's type. The redhead put her hands on your shoulders. Okay, I'm done. And right on time.
Thank you, my love. You told her with a grin after you checked yourself in the mirror.
Let's take pictures for my story.
You proceeded to take hundreds of mirror pictures before deciding it was time to join the others. When you open the door, you find the three men in front of the door. Bucky had his back against the wall opposite to the door, you felt his eyes taking you in. He didn't take them off, even as Natasha spoke.
How long have you been standing there?
45 minutes.
That's not true. Maybe five minutes max. Steve told her.
But I will forget you because you look absolutely breathtaking. Sam told you, coming closer to hug you.
Okay, let's go.
~~~
The party was in full swing. When you arrived, there was a queue of people waiting to get in. However, Wanda must have put you on the VIP list because Natasha walked past the line and stopped in front of the bouncer. When she told him her name, he called a woman who came to welcome you.
Follow me, please? She gestured to the room, and the whole group followed her. She took you upstairs, an area reserved for the VIP where couches were installed. You noticed the access to a terrace, which offered a wonderful view of Las Vegas.
You were so focused on the view that you didn't see a redhead and a blonde walking towards you.
Natasha, my love! The redhead exclaimed with a small accent. It's been so long. You watched her as she shared an embrace with your best friend. How are you? She turned her attention to the rest of you. You must be the famous woman I hear so much about. She hugged you.
Hi. It's nice to meet you. Thank you for inviting us.
Of course!
We weren't going to let you go to one of those awful clubs downtown. The blonde man beside her told you with a smirk. You are absolutely divine. He grabbed your hand and kissed the back of it. May I get you something to drink?
Surprise me. You smirked back at him, unaware of the daggers Bucky was sending to the man.
If Pietro bothers you, just tell him off. Wanda told you with a grin. Now, follow me to our reserved place.
She brought you to another area, which offered a perfect view both on the dance floor downstairs and on the city. You all sit down around the table, and you find yourself sitting between Natasha and an empty spot. Pietro came back a few minutes later, followed by a waiter who was carrying a tray full of drinks. However, Pietro was carrying himself a glass with a red liquid in it.
Here you go, my dear. It's my own creation. It's nonalcoholic since Wanda told me you were driving tomorrow.
Thank you. You sipped on it, the fruity taste of the drink on your tongue was moan-worthy. That is like really good. I need the recipe.
For that you will have to come back. He flirted, putting his arm on the backrest.
After drinking your first drink, Sam took you, Natasha and Wanda downstairs on the dance floor. Steve and Bucky stayed upstairs while Pietro had to take care of something. You were having so much fun. You and Wanda really hit it off, laughing and dancing together as if you knew each other for way longer. Sam was dancing with his Labubu in his hands as Natasha recorded him and laughed every time he would do new moves. Pietro joined you, dancing close with you, your back against his chest and his hands on your hips.
Is there any explanation as to why your friend is staring at me like I killed his mother? The blonde said in your ear.
You looked up to find Bucky with his hands on the railing, staring at you both. Ignore him. That's what I do.
You all continued dancing until you decided to get another drink and made your way back upstairs. Bucky had sat back, he had his legs spread, one arm resting on the backrest. He looked at you, didn't even bother to acknowledge Sam who sat beside you and continued staring at you darkly. You didn't look away, starting a sort of staring contest with the brunette. Pietro's arm around you is the only thing that seemed to break his trance, choosing to concentrate on the blonde man besides you.
He sat up, and you knew you were in for something even before he could open his mouth. Bucky was like that. He stared, analyzed, and calculated everything, every single one of his moves, just like if he were playing chess even before his opponent knew he was playing. This side was responsible for your downfall. Bucky has grown into a man who considered the people around him as pawns before humans. Or at least that's what it felt like.
So Pietro. He started, staring directly in the blonde's eyes. What do you do exactly?
That. The other man replied, raising his arms in the air to show the building. I own several establishments. Bars, clubs, restaurants... You name it.
So what...? You're stuck in your teenage years? Your friends stopped talking and looked at the scene. Partying all night, sleeping with whoever you want without facing any consequences...
Pietro laughed softly at that. And what do you do, Mr. Barnes? Because from what I've heard you don't really have the reputation of a gentleman. Even less with women. What did that magazine cal you again? He pretended to think. Oh yeah! A genius businessman but a fuckboy at heart, unable to maintain any relationship except with his phone. Must have cut deep.
The brunette just shrugged, and Pietro chuchled.
Actually, maybe you liked it. A man like you mustn't be looking to settle. No... No one is good enough for you.
It was the glance Bucky shot you that made it. You excused yourself, giving some excuse about needing to go to the restroom when you did not even walk in the right direction. Natasha started to get up, but a gesture of your hand made her sit back down.
What the fuck, Barnes? Steve asked sternly his best friend.
But he wasn't listening, his eyes following you in the club.
~~~
You slipped outside on the terrace, the soft breeze caressing your bare back, cooling you down a bit. You heard the door opening behind you but didn’t bother to look back, too concentrated on your breathing.
You can’t be seriously thinking about sleeping with him. Bucky told you, coming to a stop a few steps from you.
You froze, your grip on the railing tightening to the point your knuckles turned white. You saw red.
Excuse me?! You only turned your head in his direction.
You heard me. He told you as he stared hard.
You turned completely around, your back against the railing and your arms crossed. And who do you think you are, James?
James. You only used his government name when you were truly angry. And angry you were. How dare he act like that?
It’s dangerous. It’s reckless.
I’m perfectly able to take care of myself. Just like I can choose whoever I want to take care of me.
Come on! He scoffed, rolling his eyes. That man doesn’t even deserve to talk to you.
And you do? You raised one of your eyebrows.
He stepped back slightly, as if you had slapped him.
You lost the privilege of having a say in who I decide to sleep with a long time ago.
You walked past him, planning on returning to the party.
So what? You’re going to let Steve fuck you?
You stopped dead in your tracks. How dare you. You walked back to him and hit him on the chest with your finger. I have been patient with you, too patient. I did not say anything about your fucking attitude, did not say anything about what happened between us, just like you wanted. But I draw the line at you coming after your best friend.
He scoffed again, his shoulder slightly raising. Yeah sure… my best friend. He came closer. My best friend wouldn’t go after the woman I- he stopped himself from going further.
The woman you what, James? The woman you toyed with for years? The woman you left overnight after deciding you weren’t interested in her anymore? You hold his gaze. I think we shouldn’t speak to each other for a while. After all, it never bothered you. You told him and left, blinking the tears away.
Bucky watched your back as you walked away, feeling as if you had just ripped off his heart and left with it. He was being an asshole, he knew it. But that’s the only way he found to stay in your vicinity. Even if you hated him for that.
As you walked back in the room, you found Natasha, who was talking with Wanda and her brother.
Are you okay? She asked you with worry, noticing how pale you looked.
I’m going to go back to my room. You told her before nodding to the two siblings.
Bucky Barnes had ruined once again another night.
~~~
You didn’t sleep that much that night, with what Bucky said still in your mind. You thought you were past that. Thought he was too occupied to see other women to care about who you were seeing.
When the sun rose over the skyline, you decided to get up to prepare your stuff for the long trip ahead. You were supposed to be driving for most of it.
After zipping up your suitcase, you took out your phone and realized there were still two hours left before the departure. The others were still sleeping, the hangover they were going to wake up with was not going to be funny.
So you did what you did best, left your room to get some breakfast for them to power through the morning.
Las Vegas early in the morning was not at all the same as yesterday. The people walking in the street were wearing suits and ties, going to work with their cups of coffee in their hands and barking orders at their phones.
You entered a café, walking towards the woman standing behind the counter.
Good morning, what can I get you?
Hi. You tell her your order. And… what is the most bitter coffee you have? Like the worst you ever tasted? You asked her and smile at her smirk.
Honestly nothing on this menu tastes bad. However, I can do my personal recipe reserved for special people. She winked at you.
Then I will take it. You told her with a smile and stepped on the side to wait for your order.
And here it is. The barista told you as she gave you the bag. I hope the special person will like it.
Thank you again. You smiled at her and left the building.
You went back to the hotel, starting with Natasha’s room. You knocked and waited for her to open the door. Since she didn’t, you used the card each of your friends gave you for this specific reason.
Rise and shine, sunshine. You said as you walked to the window and opened the curtains.
Natasha groaned, putting one of the pillows over her face. Get out!
I got you this. You placed the coffee on her bedside table. We’re leaving in about an hour. Try to be a little bit awake, yeah? If you need anything, call me.
She raised her thumb up in your direction, and you left her to get ready. Your next stop was Sam’s room. You didn’t even bother to knock and directly used the card.
Good morning, my love. You said with affection and sat down next to him on the bed.
The curtains were already opened, the room was not as messy as you imagined, and Sam was lying alone, shirtless.
I’m disappointed. You pouted. I thought you were going to find the rare gem.
He lightly raised his head from his pillow, smirking at you. She already left.
You grinned. Well done, my boy. Now come on, big guy, time to get going. We’re leaving in an hour, please don’t fall back asleep. I brought you a coffee. You gave it to him. I’ll see you soon.
Your next step was Steve’s room. You knocked softly and waited for him to open the door. He did it in under a minute and smiled brightly when he realized it was you.
You’re already up. And dressed! You exclaimed, opening your arms.
Yeah, I didn’t stay that long last night. He let you come in. By the way, where were you?
Oh, I wasn’t feeling that great. I went to bed early. But I’m all better now! You reassured him as you walked to the desk on which his journal was lying. How is it working? You nodded to the page.
Great! This trip was a great idea.
I’m glad. We’re leaving in about an hour.
Okay, I will be there. Do you need any help?
No I’m- You looked down at the last cup of coffee. Actually, could you bring that to Barnes? I don’t really want to go in his room and find him lying with his conquest of the evening.
I will.
Thank you! And you left, going back to your room.
~~~
When you arrived at the car, Steve and Bucky were already there, leaning against it. The brunette was wearing sunglasses and didn’t bother to look your way. You shrugged it off, tired of trying to decipher him.
Sam and Natasha arrived maybe five minutes after, caps and sunglasses on since the sun was burning their brains. They climbed in the backseats without talking to anyone.
Then Bucky looked at Steve and sighed, joining the two in the backseat.
Are you okay to drive? The blonde asked you.
Yep. You’re okay to be my copilot?
Sure am.
You both climbed in your respective seats, and you turned the car on. Are all of your seatbelts on? You asked your friends.
Yes mom. Came from both Sam and the redhead.
You smiled and took off.
Me every time I read a x reader writing in which the reader is small, talks back and isn’t scared of the villain knowing damn well if it was me I would’ve fled that man like the wind
Or
Me ever time I write something where the reader is strong, independent and knows how to fight when all I can do is obsessing over men who don’t exist

Stolen glances and shared memories.
Masterlist - previous part - next part
A/N: Here is the first chapter! I know it took me one week to finish it lol. There shouldn’t be any mistakes but if you find one, please let me know :) Xx
Summary: Between stolen glances and the traces of the past still visible on your faces, your relationship with Bucky is still offbeat. As the first step of your road trip flows by and the group discovers local treasures, you can't help but feel like everything has to be perfect. It has to be, it's the start. Thankfully, you can count on the others to make you laugh and forget about the sword of Damocles hanging over your head.

Nat come on, we’re going to be late!
I’m coming, I’m coming. The redhead told you, pulling her suitcases from her bedroom. Don’t get your panties in a twist.
You rolled your eyes. The Uber is waiting for us and I don’t want it to leave without us.
Remind me why we took the earliest plane to LA we could find. She whined, putting her sunglasses on before even exiting the apartment.
Because it was the cheapest. And we will arrive before the guys. Which means we are free to choose whatever we want them to wear for the whole trip.
Why didn’t you start with that! You smiled at her reaction, watching her walk past you.
It was a dumb little tradition the four of you, then Sam, had started in college. Every time you would go on a trip, each of you would buy something a member of the group had to keep the whole vacation. Most of the time it was cringe T-shirts, dumb caps or weird sunglasses. Natasha always managed to find the weirdest thing one of the airport shops could offer. You, on the other hand, were always struggling to find something that wasn’t too expensive, too stupid, or too fragile.
The trip to the airport wasn’t necessarily a long one, especially this early in the morning. The driver was a nice old man who helped you put your stuff in the trunk and get it out. You thanked him and tipped him well, then made your way inside.
~~~
Dude, if I'm being completely honest with you, I didn't believe this trip was going to happen. Natasha confessed, as she put her passport back in her purse.
I know.
Like Bucky, let's be honest, is a dipshit now. And Sam is a diva.
Thank God for Steve. That man is a sweetheart. You agreed with her, looking to the storefronts. Look. That is perfect for Sam. You pointed to a horrible-looking yellow Labubu.
Oh I'm so buying it. He will have to keep it with him every day of this trip. And it's a keychain! You wanna look around? She asked you as you both made your way to pay for the gift.
Nah. I need something for Steve but I didn't see anything great. You stopped in your tracks. That would be really good for Bucky. You nodded toward a T-shirt on which was written "Nobody knows I'm a lesbian".
God College Bucky would have absolutely always worn it. I miss college Bucky. She complained, taking the shirt in her hands. Should we get it?
I don't know. Does he deserve a $25 T-shirt?
No but I would kill to see moron Bucky wear it.
Split? You eyed her from the side.
Deal.
You went to pay and left the shop, the two of you with proud smiles on your faces. Natasha grabbed your arm.
Now come on. Let's find something for our favorite.
~~~
He is not going to come, Steve. Sam whined to his friend, begging for Steve to stop calling the brunette.
He is. He paid for it.
As if he would care. The man is filthy rich.
I know him, Sam. He wouldn't do that.
Wouldn't he? Sam raised his hands after seeing the glare Steve shot him. Listen, I love the man but let's be honest, he has many more reasons to stay than to come.
The people sat around the two men started walking towards the gates as the boarding began.
Come on, Steve. We're not missing the plane because of this asshole.
He might make it on time.
Sure. The man pushed his friend towards the flight attendant. Remember, you have a book to write.
I know. Steve said, resigned, as he handed his passport to the flight attendant.
The two men sat down at their assigned seats, Sam against the porthole.
I can't believe him. The blond uttered, saking his head. Not answering on the group chat? Fine. But not coming on a trip because he doesn't want to miss work? That's a new low.
We both know that is not the problem, Steve.
What's the problem? Bucky said, sitting down smoothly next to Steve.
You're here. Sam said, looking up and down the brunette.
Told you. Steve whispered.
Wouldn't miss it. Bucky replied, clearly not so happy to be there. Did we really have to travel in economy? I have no room for my legs. He complained as Sam grabbed the safety notice and hit the back of his head. I'm joking. Now both of you shut up, I need to sleep.
~~~
They should be here any minute now. You told Natasha, your nerves getting the best of you.
Girl, if you do not relax, I'm gonna go ask this teenager, who clearly has weed somewhere on him, to give you some. She nodded to a boy who was weirdly looking around. It's going to be fine. She said as the three men appeared through the arrivals gates.
Sam immediately saw you and ran towards you, hugging you tightly. Girl, I missed you so much.
I missed you too. Did you grow up or something?
Nah, you've just shrunk.
How dare you. You hit him on the shoulder and turned to face Steve who immediately engulfed you in a hug. Hi, Steve.
Hi, love. How was your trip?
That's what you love the most about the blond man. He was always worried about your safety and your happiness. In contrast to others.
It was a short one. Must have been long for you guys.
Not for them. He nodded to the other two men. They slept through the whole thing.
That's not true! I was just resting my eyes. Bucky was really sleeping tho.
As if summoned, Bucky appeared in front of you, at a safe distance.
Bucky. You greeted him tightly as he offered you a nod in return.
Now that the awkwardness is done, let's get going. We don't have a lot of time and I won't sacrifice any places on my list for you guys.
Dude, you're living two hours away from Los Angeles. Stop stressing everyone. Sam reminded her, putting his arm around her shoulders. Show me your list.
The five of you made your way out of the airport to get the rental, Sam and Nat leading, you and Steve walking side by side and Bucky behind, already on the phone.
~~~
Bucky took the wheel as soon as you got the keys. Said he didn't trust Natasha to drive safely in Los Angeles traffic which led to an argument on who is the best driver of the group. The brunette drove you to the Airbnb he rented for the two nights you were going to stay in the city.
Wait, is that our house? Natasha asked excitedly, her forehead pressed against the window.
What do you think? The man smugly asked as he turned off the engine.
Dude it's beautiful! Sam exclaimed, already getting out of the car.
The house was a modern one. Located in West Hollywood, not so far from Paramount Pictures studio tour, the house didn't seem that big but according to Bucky's smug, look you expected the inside to be a maze.
You all walked to the door, waiting for Bucky to enter the code. As soon as the door opened, Sam and Natasha went running inside.
First arrived take the room! Sam screamed, pushing the redhead out of his way.
Steve, who was standing besides you, shook his head at their antics. Great choice, Buck.
I know. His phone started to ring. Pardon me, I have to take that.
You watched him walk to the floor-to-ceilling window, open it and make his way outside. Do you think he is going to have his phone against his ear the whole trip?
Be nice to him. He is a CEO. Steve mocked him and smirked down at you when you laughed softly. Come on. Let's find a room before Sam and Natasha take all of them.
As you made your way upstairs, you could hear your two friends screaming every time they discovered a new part of the house.
Girl there is a pool! Natasha told your, only her head sticking out of the doorframe. And I got the Master's bedroom.
Ouch. How is Sam dealing with that?
Good he took the one with a modern painting that I think, he fully counts on buying when he is back in New York.
Oh god, I have to go see it. He has really bad taste in art, I can't take having another empty spray can in our living room. The blond shot you a pained look and went to find his roommate.
Come on. Natasha grabbed your arm and walked you to the end of the hallway. Let's find you a room. I thought you might enjoy this one. She told you, opening a door.
Is that a balcony? You said, walking in.
It is. You don't have the best view tho. She noted, referring to the view on the street.
I don't care, it's not a busy road.
So which bedroom is still free? Bucky asked as he arrived at the top of the stairs.
I don't know, ask Steve. The redhead called out, rolling her eyes at him. I guess asshole Bucky is on the trip, too.
I mean it would have been surprising if he left him in New York. You told her, opening your suitcase. So what's the first thing on your list?
I have Santa Monica-
Let's do that tomorrow afternoon so we can go to the pier at night.
That's what I was thinking. The Griffith Observatory, the Walk of Fame, the Hollywood sign and that's all for what I really want to do.
Ok so we can do the observatory later today so that we get the sunset. From what I have seen, we're not that far from the Walk of Fame, we can start with that and find something to eat while we're at it. Tonight we do Hollywood sign and Griffith?
Sounds like a plan to me. She smirked, taking you in her arms. I'm so happy to do that with you.
Me too. You hugged her back. Now come on, we have to tell the others.
~~~
You met up with the others in the living room, waiting for them to settle before exchanging the gifts you bought at the airport.
Ok, so Nat and I found a gift for each of you. Please Sam shut up and let us do it first. You interrupted the man before he could speak. Do you wanna start? You asked the redhead.
Yep. She grabbed Sam's gift and threw it at him.
Oh my- What is this thing?! Is this going to haunt me at night? Sam screamed, looking terrified at the sight of the Labubu.
It's a keychain, you can put it in the belt loop of your jeans. Natasha said with a proud smile. I want you to have it the whole trip.
Really? Can't we negotiate? Let's say I never wear it.
Nop. I don't wanna hear it. She refused to listen to him, already taking Bucky's gift out of the bag. And for you, dipshit. It's from both of us, we couldn't resist since it fits you so well. She threw him the T-Shirt.
Bucky read the text and rolled his eyes. You must feel really intelligent with that one.
Oh shut up you love it. We all know you're going to wear it at your next big meeting.
You shook your head before grabbing Steve's gift. Since you're clearly our favorite here, I didn't choose anything too ridiculous. You handed him the well-wrapped gift.
He unwrapped it and laughed at the sight of the weird pen you offered him.
Since Sam here told us you were writing your next book by hand, I thought you might as well do it with a great pen.
I don't even know what it's supposed to look like. Why does it have red silicone... hair?
Yeah I don't know either. It's just really cool for you.
Thank you.
Now it's our turn. Sam said, getting up and giving Natasha a cap on which was written "big dick energy". I thought it fit you well.
Dude, I love it! I'm so gonna wear it all the time. She immediately put it on her head. What do you think?
It really suits you. Bucky agreed.
Steve was the next one. He gifted you a neon pink Barbie phone case. Since you loved the movie.
I love it. Thank you, Stevie.
Then all of you turned your attention towards the brunette.
I don't have anything because I arrived late at the airport. I had a meeting.
Yeah sure, a "meeting". Sam added, clearly knowing more than Steve. What was her name this time?
Sensing the change in your posture Natasha quickly changed the topic. Who cares? Let's hit the road.
~~~
Are you going to drive the whole trip? Sam asked Bucky from the passenger seat.
I don't trust anyone to drive this big guy in Los Angeles. Bucky said, eyes concentrated on the road.
Steve is an excellent driver. Sam retorted.
Not when he is tired. And from what he told me, he didn't get a lot of sleep because a certain someone needed help to pack his stuff. The brunette side-eyed the other man.
You didn't really listen to their bickering until you heard your name from Bucky's mouth.
... Is the only one I would trust with the wheel right now. She is a responsible adult compared to all of you. Your eyes met in the rearview mirror.
What?! The last time she drove we almost ended up in the curb.
That's because a certain someone I won't name was so drunk and almost puked on me. You defended yourself, staring at Sam.
I wasn't that drunk.
I never said it was you. You murmured, returning your eyes to the window.
That is to say, you're not driving until we're out of the city. Now shut up we're almost there.
You were so entranced by what was happening in the street that you didn't notice Bucky's eyes back on you through the rearview.
~~~
The Walk of Fame was quite crowded for a Monday afternoon. You took a few pictures of the stars of the celebrities you particularly liked but mostly watched Natasha telling gossip about every person you could find on this street.
Are you guys ready to go find something to eat? Sam asked, taking the lead of the group.
God yes, I'm starving. The redhead added.
Wait, Steve didn't you want to find Marvin Gaye's star?
It's no big deal. We're all hungry. Steve assured you, not wanting to cause trouble.
No you know what? I want to see his star. Guys, why don't you go find something to eat while we search for it?
I like this idea. Buck, who are you going with? Sam turned to the brunette.
I'm curious about this star too. You guys go ahead we will meet you there.
Sam and Natasha waved at you and left to find something to eat while you checked on your phone where this star might be.
Here it is! You exclaimed, showing the spot with your finger. Go ahead Steve, I'm going to take a picture of you. You laughed at the look on his face. He is so happy. You told no one in particular but Bucky reacted anyway.
He is.
How has he been doing lately? You asked him, remembering the hard times Steve has gone through lately.
Better. His mother's death motivated him to finish his book.
Yeah I read it. It was both beautiful and deeply sad.
It was a way for him to pay her a last tribute. I think it also helped him grieve.
What about you? I know you've been close to her too.
Obviously it hurts but it got us closer too.
I'm glad you had each other. You told him as Steve made his way back to you.
What are you guys talking about?
About how hungry we are. The brunette told him quickly. His ability to lie this quickly made a gnawing feeling settle in your stomach. Did you see everything you wanted to see?
Yep. I'm all good.
Then let's go. Sam texted me they are at in-and-out.
~~~
You all ate together, laughing at Steve who was trying to eat his hamburger without putting ketchup everywhere and inevitably failing. In this moment, it felt as if you were back in college. The four of you, and Sam, meeting after a day of lectures to eat together, complain about upcoming exams and sharing gossip about people you know. You almost forgot all the things that happened since then. When you and Natasha moved to San Francisco, when Steve published his first and successful book after the death of his mother or when Bucky and you-
You were interrupted by the ringing of Bucky's phone. You watched as he took it in his hand, frowned and then excused himself to answer it.
I bet it's her. Sam said with a mouth full of fries.
Gross! Keep your mouth closed! Natasha protested.
No it's not. I'm sure it's work.
We're supposed to be on vacation. He isn't supposed to answer the phone. I'm telling you it's her.
He will really be on vacation tomorrow morning. He still has this call early tomorrow.
Your and Natasha's heads were moving at the rhythm of their exchange, as if you were watching a match.
Excuse us but who are you talking about? Natasha, as the nosy person she is, asked them.
Sam don't-
A few weeks ago, Steve and I went to see him at his office. We were supposed to go to a match after that. But when we came into his office-
-Without knocking. The blond added.
We interrupted what seemed like a private meeting between a pretty blond and Barnes. You felt your stomach clenching.
How private? Natasha asked.
Well they were pretty close, she was whispering something in his ear and laughing with him. Plus, when he saw us he jumped as if we had just caught him in the act.
Steve, is he extrapolating? The redhead turned toward him, knowing he was the person you could trust.
I mean he never talked about her or anything. But yeah... It was weird. He sent you an apologetic look which you brushed off.
And since then, he is always on the phone. We checked-
I didn't.
Yeah because you're a chicken. I checked his phone and he is always calling this Pepper something. Like all the time.
The name rang a bell but you couldn't remember when or why you would know it. You've never met her, that's for sure.
The conversion was interrupted by Bucky walking back to the table. Steve pretended to be entranced by what was left of his fries while Sam stared at the brunette with a smirk, which he ignored.
Are you guys all done? He asked, not sitting down. We should go before the observatory closes.
Shit... Guys? Natasha said, eyes on her phone. We're monday. The observatory is closed on monday.
Not today. You reassured her. I checked before making the plan for today. They are exceptionally open today. But Bucky's right, we should go.
God you're perfect. She winked at you before walking outside to the car.
The drive to the observatory wasn't really a long one. Bucky was still driving since you didn't feel like it for today and he didn't trust the other. He parked the car with ease and got out last. Natasha and Sam were walking in front of you, bickering about something one of them said. Sam and Bucky were walking beside you, talking about a place they used to go in New York that was about to close.
You know it's the one I sent you a picture of. With the swings used as chairs. Steve turned to you, trying to get you to participate in the conversation even though you weren't directly concerned.
Oh yeah. It's sad if it's closing.
I wanted to take you and Nat there the next time you came to New York. I'm sure you would have loved it.
Little did Steve know that you already tried it once, not so long ago. Bucky caught your eye before quickly looking away, as if he had been burned.
Come on, I know a place. Bucky told you, pulling you by your hand toward a little restaurant. The rain was so bad that you were both soaked to the bone when you entered the building.
Bucky walked in the room as if he were at home, walking to the counter and taking you with him by the hold he had of your hand. Hi Agnes. He greeted a middle-aged woman.
She must have been in her late fifties, grey strands were contrasting with the dark of her hair. Agnes had a kind smile. When her eyes landed on you, you could see the surprise and then the happiness of seeing you.
James! It's been a while. She commented, narrowing her eyes at the brunette who was still holding your hand. And you brought someone! You must be the famous woman I hear so much about.
I hope it's only good things. You joked, looking at Bucky who was already smiling down at you.
All these boys are enamored by you. You shouldn't worry about them too much. Now come on, you want the usual? Your companion nodded. And what would you like, honey?
I will let you choose for me. You seem to know best. You told her with a smile.
Perfect! Go sit down, I will make sure you don't wait too long. She winked at you both before pushing you toward a free table in a corner.
That night, Bucky looked at you as if you were the brightest star of the universe.
You shook your head at the memory, trying to chase it away. You spent the rest of the walk silent, admiring the view you had of the city. When you arrived at the top, the sun was already setting, coloring the sky in a palette of yellow and pink.
You knew it was going to be overcrowded, you just didn't expect it to be that much.
Well we're sure aren't the only one who had this idea. Natasha commented, watching the families, couples and friends, already there.
Careful. Bucky said, lightly pulling you towards him when two teenagers ran past your group and almost crashed into you. As soon as his hand touched you bare skin he took it away, like he had been burned.
Ok, we're not alone, but look at the view! At the sky! You can see the Hollywood sign from here. You exclaimed, pointing with your finger in the right direction. Come on, Sam, I know you want us to take pictures of you for your Instagram.
Fine. The man replied, already walking to pose for you. Make sure you have my right profile.
The rest of the evening passed by as you all took pictures of one another, laughing at each stupid pose Sam would take with his bright yellow Labubu and watching the sun disappear for the day.
By the time you made it home, all of you were exhausted, looking like zombies in need of a shower. The men were a little bit struggling with the jet lag and the fatigue they accumulated from the plane trip while you and Natasha were up since way too early.
Guys I love you but I'm going to call it an early night. I need to preserve my skin for the pictures I'm going to force you to take. Good night. Sam told you, going upstairs.
Bucky and Steve fell down on the couch next to each other, bags under their eyes.
Yeah, I'm gonna go too. See you guys tomorrow. You bid them good night with a smile and started walking toward the stairs when you heard Natasha running after you.
Wait for me! See you tomorrow, losers. She told the two men, running after you.
Only Steve and Bucky were left in the living room.
Don't be a jerk, Buck. Steve warned his best friend.
Am not.
Yes you are. You act like an arrogant prick who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Steve got up with a little difficulty. She isn't being weird about this, you shouldn't be either. He simply advised the brunette before telling him good night and going to his room.
With all of you gone, Bucky was left alone with his thoughts.

07/14, Santa Monica
You woke up in the early morning, the rays of sunshine falling on your face through the window. You stayed a little bit longer in your bed, scrolling through social media and answering emails and texts that needed to be answered. When you were done, you got dressed, brushed your hair, and made your way downstairs. The house was completely silent until you heard someone speak in the kitchen.
You walked quietly to the room, trying to find out who was already up after a day of traveling and tourist activities. Crossing the threshold of the door you stopped, realizing that Bucky was sitting on one of the stools. His laptop was open in front of him and a woman was speaking to him about data and investment.
You waved at him and walked to the sink to get yourself a glass of water.
Yeah, I understand Carol but you know I don't trust Rumlow. I don't think it's the wise thing to do. If we follow him into this business, then when shit hits the fan, and with that man it will, he will bring us down with him. He took a sip of his coffee. I will contact Stark and ask him if he can meet you while I'm away.
So I'm in charge while you're gone?
Yes, you are. He laughed softly. Please make sure Yelena doesn't burn down the whole building. I will see you in August.
They bid their goodbyes and Bucky turned off his laptop.
Yelena? You asked him, coming to stand on the other side of the island. Nat's sister is working for you?
Yeah, she is an asset... When she wants to be. He sighed and shook his head. Why are you up so early?
The sun woke me up and I couldn't fall back asleep. Are you the only one up?
He shook his head before looking outside. Steve was up before me. He is outside, apparently he writes better in the early morning.
Did he say anything about not disturbing him?
It's Steve. Bucky said but seeing the look on your face, he elaborated. He doesn't get disturbed. He won't mind if you go see him.
You nodded, already walking to the floor-to-ceiling windows. Yeah, I forgot that not everyone is like you. You said lowly with a smirk, even though you knew he heard you.
You slide the door open, walking out before closing it behind you. Steve was sitting at a glass table not so far from the pool. He had a notebook and his laptop lay out in front of him.
Hi Stevie. You greeted him, taking a seat across from him. Didn't take you for a writer who writes on a laptop.
He smiled and shook his head. I am not. Normally I would write everything in this. He showed you his notebook. But my editor wants to have a typed version. So all my ideas go in this, and then I'm typing the rest on my laptop.
Wasn't it too hard for you to understand how it works? You laughed at his expression.
Shut up. Bucky and Sam had to teach me basic things. I felt like a fucking old man.
You're pushing thirty-five, sweetie. What did you expect? You laughed even more when he sent you a paper ball.
Slowly, the rest of the group woke up and met you outside, starting with Bucky, who just came out of the shower. Natasha followed not so long after, and then Sam had to be woken up by the redhead.
The sight of the whole group together again made your heart ache. You who longed to get everyone back together.
Anyway, Natasha started, today is beach day. We're going to Santa Monica. So please dress accordingly. Yes, even you Bucky. She got up. We will probably not come back here before going to the pier, so please take a change of clothes with you. Then she started at all of you and raised a brow. Come on! What are you still doing here?
I didn't even have time to drink my coffee! Sam complained while the rest of you rushed inside to get ready.
That's a privilege reserved for the people who wake up early. She replied to him and took his cup from his hands. Come on! If you're not ready in twenty minutes, we leave without you.
That got Sam running inside.
~~~
Traveling in Los Angeles in the middle of July meant not being alone in most of the places you went to. Even more so when said place was the beach and you were in the middle of a heat wave. You managed to find a place to lay out your stuff, putting your towel right in between Natasha's and Steve's.
Kids were running and screaming, chasing one another with water guns, splashing you as they ran by. One look from the redhead was enough to make them flee, almost leaving their guns on the floor.
So who is going in the water? You asked, applying sunscreen on your legs.
Me. Natasha said and got up.
Yeah me too. Steve joined her and waited for you before starting to make your way to the ocean.
Wait! Sam called after you. Who's going to do my back?
Ask Bucky! You told him, laughing as you watched him turn toward the brunette.
Come here, big guy. Bucky said, tapping on his towel.
You were swimming slowly with your two friends, enjoying the ray of sun on your face. The water was hot enough for you to get in without problem but still cool enough to refresh you.
So... Natasha broke the silence. Stevie, where are you romantically speaking? She asked the blonde with a side smile.
Oh god... The blonde whined before diving in the ocean for a few seconds.
What? She asked as he resurfaces. No lady sweet enough to make your heart beat faster?
You're corny. He groaned, looking anywhere but at her. But no. No one.
How long has it been? You asked.
Since mom's death. Approximately.
Wait, you had no one since Linda? You stopped swimming for a minute, almost going underwater.
He shook his head. She had quite the impact, you know.
Dude, she was an asshole. She left you right after the funeral.
I mean I wasn't the most cheerful guy back then.
That's because you just lost your mother! You and Natasha exclaimed together.
Yeah well... But yeah no I haven't met anyone interesting since then.
Maybe you and Bucky should get married at forty. I mean, he won't find anyone able to put up with his shit, and you're too pure for this world.
I agree. You would look hot together. You added, smiling at Steve as he splashed you both.
I have been putting up with his shit for too long now. We will always be fighting.
Yeah but I mean... After most fights come the best nights of your life. Natasha said, laughing at both your faces.
Then suddenly, the redhed was pulled underwater by Sam who joined you in the water. He was laughing as he pushed her a little bit deeper before she kicked him between his legs.
You dick! My hair was clean! Then she pushed on his shoulders to get him underwater, too.
You were starting to get cold and decide to go back on your towel. I'm gonna go lay down for a bit, you're staying here? You asked the blonde.
They need supervision. He nodded to your two friends who were still fighting and trying to drown each other.
Walking back to your towel, you stopped as you noticed that Bucky was reading a book. What are you reading? You asked him while you dried yourself.
Bucky couldn't stop himself and looked you up and down, something in his eyes changing. He cleared his throat and turned his attention back to the pages. Something written by a French lawyer about the abolition of the death penalty.
You snorted, and the brunette looked at you almost offended. What a joyful thing to read on vacation. You sat down.
You used to read those kinds of books too, if I remember correctly.
I did not!
Didn't you bring "They Both Die at the End" for our vacation in Palermo in college?
You rolled your eyes. Okay fine I did. You looked back at the ocean. Aren't you going to swim?
Maybe later, I want to finish this chapter first. He replied, and yet, his attention never went fully back on the words.
What are you reading, angel? Bucky asked, standing above you and holding the hammock you were lying on.
They both die at the end. You replied, your attention still on the pages of your book.
The house where you stayed at was an old villa, up in the hills of Palermo. It offered a magnificent view of the sea, even better from where you were lying. At night, you could almost hear the sound of the waves crashing on the shore. At least you imagined it.
That trip was the first one with Sam, who was brought along by Steve. At that time, Bucky and Sam did not really like each other. That's why Bucky stayed glued to you for most of the trip.
The man walked around the hammock before letting himself fall on it after grabbing your legs to sit at their place. He then placed them back on his lap.
Are you still fleeing Sam? You narrowed your eyes at him.
From your point of view, Bucky was backlit, the sun highlighting his profile. He started growing a stubble at the beginning of the semester and liked it so much that he rarely shaved anymore. You didn't mind it, it made him appear a little bit older, more mature, more... Manly.
I am not fleeing him! I'm just taking some space... from him. He told you, his hand closing on your ankles.
Yeah, sure. You deadpanned. I don't understand why you don't like him, he is nice.
Nice? He asked with a raise brow. Wait, he sits up, do you have a crush on him?!
What? No! I just think it's nice that Steve made a friend that isn't us. And he seems to have his back.
You stopped for a minute and watched Bucky more closely. His jaw was set, he wouldn't look at you, and the grip he had on your ankles made his knuckles turn white.
Bucky... Are you jealous of Sam?
He turned toward you, offended. What?! Why would I be jealous of him? I mean, I've known Steve since school, and Sam has known me for what, six months? I'm not jealous. I'm not. He added, trying to persuade you.
You took your legs off of him and sat up closer, your shoulder touching his. He is not going to replace you. He is just a new person in the group. A new friend.
Yeah, sure until the moment he tries something on you.
What are you talking about?
I've seen the way he looks at you.
Bucky, he has a girlfriend. You met her last time at Steve's place.
Yeah, sure. He scoffed. I don't trust him around you.
Since when are you my knight in shining armor? You looked directly at him now.
Since the first day we met, angel. He replied, turning his body towards you.
You're so corny. You laughed and pushed him back with your hands on his shoulders.
Your name being called got you out of the memory and back to the reality where Natasha was standing in front of you, dripping wet.
Dude, are you okay?
Yeah, I was just thinking about work.
Ugh. She groaned and sat down next to you. You need to quit.
Why, what's happening? Sam asked you before moving his towel right in front of yours.
Nothing, it's just really stressful.
Nothing?! Dude, you're doing the work of your whole team because they weren't capable of replacing the people who quit! You're going to burn out.
I will be fine. It's not like I can change right now, the job market isn't doing so well.
I don't care! I'm making good money, and I would love to be your sugar daddy. She told you as she put her cap on.
I thought you loved it. Steve chimed in.
I did, but the company was bought by an asshole. And he brought over all his asshole employees. Only men. It's not the best atmosphere.
Did you look elsewhere?
You nodded. I sent my resume, but no one got back to me, so...
You've got a master's degree from NYU, you can't tell me that no one is interested! Sam exclaimed, remembering what you told him.
I know. Anyway, we're on vacation, let's talk about something else.
Yeah, I have an idea! Natasha falsely exclaimed. Like, when does dipshit Bucky count on disappearing? She asked, looking directly at him.
What did I do now? He exclaimed, opening his arms wide.
You didn’t mean to, but your eyes got caught on his arms. He sure did not stop going to the gym. You quickly averted your gaze before he could catch you looking at him.
He noticed. Of course he did. When it came to you, he was always aware of what you were doing. Always keeping an eye on you, even when you were thousands of miles away from him.
It always has been like that. You were his sun, and he gravitated around you. Even when he tried not to.
~~~
You stayed the whole day at the beach, only moving to get something to eat before walking back to your towels.
It felt like a real vacation day. One where you only focused on feeling the sun warming your skin, laughing with your friends, and reading the book you wanted to start for so long.
At the end of the afternoon, you all packed up your stuff and walked back to the car to get changed.
You guys can go to the bathroom while we get changed. Natasha told the men, following you in the car.
Aren’t you scared that someone sees you? Sam asked.
The windows are tinted. You noted. We’re good. And you closed the door after dropping their bags out.
~~~
The pier was, as every other place in LA, packed with people. You were walking slowly, navigating through the crowd, trying not to crash into anyone. And yet you were having so much fun.
Steve and you bought cotton candy while Natasha made Bucky buy her and Sam candy apples.
Wait, add one. You told the teenager who was serving him.
Bucky looked down at you with a small smile, one of his special ones that he reserved for special people. You’re trouble, angel.
Angel. It was a pet name he hadn’t used in months. You forgot its effect on you.
What? A little sugar isn’t going to kill you. You grab one of the apple candies and hold it out to him. Is it? You challenged him.
He took the candy apple from your hand, letting his finger touch yours before bringing it you his mouth and biting into the candy. He didn’t take his eyes off of you.
You cleared your throat, averting your gaze from him. It got caught on a booth where you could play ring toss. You used to play a lot when you were a kid and decided you wanted to try again. Bucky watched you walk to it, unable to move for a minute.
You okay, Buck? Steve asked his best friend.
Yeah. He replied, joining the group to toss the rings.
I'm gonna beat all of your asses. You said it confidently, as you paid the man in charge of the stand.
Yeah, sure. I'm going to destroy you. Natasha uttered, positioning herself beside you.
Are we sure it's a good idea to let them compete? Sam asked, remembering the last time the two of you had to compete against one another.
Yeah, you're right, we should bet. Bucky affirmed, already getting out his wallet.
You sure? Steve questioned and received a nod. Fine, I'm betting on Natasha. The last time I played any game with her, she annihilated me.
My money's on the redhead too. Sam concurred. I'm too scared of her learning that I didn't believe in her abilities.
Well then, boys, I will differ from your opinion.
I love her, but she can't throw for shit. At my 27th birthday party she almost threw a dart in my eyes.
That's because she was drunk. She didn't drink for a year after that party.
Yeah, that's because Tuck had just broken up with her. Steve recalled the state you arrived in at the party.
No, she broke up with him. The brunette corrected, remembering the way you told him how things ended.
Their conversation was interrupted by the two of you screaming as the game began, causing the men to move closer. You missed your first shots, prompting Sam and Steve to send a look to Bucky, who flipped them off. Suddenly, the redhead started to miss more and more shots while you succeeded in putting the rings on the pegs. You were now trailing.
Bucky had a proud smile on his face, knowing you were going to win. After all, he had already been in Natasha's place before. He knew that ring toss was your game. And he was right when you threw the last one right on the peg before Natasha could throw hers.
I won! You raised your arms in victory, sticking out your tongue at her.
Congrats, ma'am. The man congratulated you. You won one of the prizes, make your choice.
A stuffed toy shaped like a whale shark caught your eyes, and decided to go for it. You walked around the park with it in your arms, happy.
We need to find him a name. Steve proposed, pointing to your shark.
What about Bob? Sam suggested.
He does look like a Bob. You accepted as you looked back at your stuffed toy. Well, I think we just found our mascot for the road trip!
Oh come on, stop showing off. Natasha complained, hitting you slighlty with her hips before throwing her arms around you. I'm proud of you, you didn't let me win. She kissed you on the side of your head.
You all walked to the Ferris wheel to end the night on a beautiful view of the moon over the ocean. You all climbed in the little cabin, you were sandwiched between Sam and Steve, Bucky sat across from you. Arrived at the top, everyone was looking at the view, but you and the brunette were staring at each other, small smiles on your lips.
Bucky had taken you to Coney Island for the afternoon. He came to get you with his bike after your shift and drove off immediately to the park. You played with him, he let you win and choose prizes that you would struggle to fit on his bike. You had so much fun that day, the brunette took your mind off your anxiety for your upcoming exams.
At the end of the day, you both climbed into the rainbow wheel, wanting to get a better view of the city. Sitting next to each other, you let your head fall on his shoulder and him intertwine your fingers.
You never put words on the shift in your relationship. It always has been here. Since the first moment Bucky sat down next to you at your first class before noticing he wasn't in the right amphitheater. He waited for you in front of the door, flirted with you and helped, you find the right classroom for the next class.
The brunette always knew how to make you laugh, how to make you relax after a stressful day, or fend for you with your landlord. He was your best friend. At least that's what you told yourself. But right now in this Ferris wheel, everything felt different.
And you weren't scared because it was Bucky. Nothing could go wrong with your best friend... Right?
Back at the house, everyone was tired from the long beach day you had. You all went to take a shower and agreed on meeting again in the living room to discuss the following day.
Being the first to be done, you sat down on the couch, opening your laptop on the plan you had made for the start of the trip. The others joined you not so long after that.
Okay so... We're leaving tomorrow around nine-ish for Las Vegas. It's a five-hour drive but I think maybe we should stop on the way at a Walmart to buy something for lunch and for the drive. We need things to drink too.
Tequilaaaa! Sam chanted.
That will be for the night, my love. Natasha told him with a big smile. Who's driving?
I can as long as we're out of this city. Steve said, taking a sip of his water.
I can-
Then I will drive for the first half. Bucky cut Sam short before he could say anything. Unless you want to. He told you.
No, I'm okay. Since we're only staying for the night and I don't drink, I will drive the day after tomorrow. At least until one of you is sober enough to take the wheel.
Works with me! Sam agreed and was joined by the rest of the group.
Okay well, I think I've told everything I wanted to. Since we're going to be up for most of the night tomorrow, I'm gonna go to sleep.
I think we should all go to sleep. The blond concurred with you.
You all made your ways back to your room to pack your stuff and get ready to sleep. Three knocks on your door interrupted you.
You can come in! You called out, back in the direction of the door.
Steve came in, slightly pushing the door behind him. You're sure you okay to drive after Las Vegas? I mean, if you want to have fun too, I can be the driver.
You smiled softly at his kindness. Don't worry, I'm not really drinking anymore, and I already did this trip once before. I wouldn't have suggested it if I didn't want to. You assured him, continuing to pack your suitcase.
I just wanted to make sure. You're on vacation too. Even though you planned the whole thing alone.
I wasn't alone, Nat helped me with the itinerary and the activities. And I love doing it so it's really not a big deal.
Anyways, I'm going to leave you to it. Have a good night, love.
Goodnight! You smiled at him and watched him leave the room.
You weren't the only one to notice that Steve was in your room. Bucky was standing at the top of the stairs when the blonde came out of your room. He felt jealousy settle in his stomach.
Unexpectedly, in this instant, the man Bucky considered his closest friend became a rival, one he counted on getting rid of.
A/N: Well hi guys... I know I've been MIA, college has been kicking my ass lately. Anyway, it's time! I asked all of you a few weeks ago if you would like a series (my first one) on a road trip with Steve, Bucky, Natasha and Sam. And y'all said yes! Here is the pilot. I'm working on the first chapter right now. I don't really know when I will be publishing each chapter since I've never been to the US and need to do some research for it to be authentic. I don't do a "remind me list" (idk what it's called) because I have no idea how to do it lol.
I hope you like it!
Guys for the love of God, stop talking at the same time. We can’t hear anything. Natasha told the laptop on which Sam and Steve were bickering. The redhead looked at you with a pained expression.
No Steve! It’s my laptop, I decide how to put it. Sam exclaimed to his blond friend.
Sam, just use your brain, they cannot possibly see us if you put them there.
Blah blah blah I can’t hear you. Hi girls!
You’re a child. Steve shook his head.
Are you done? You asked.
Yes. Sorry. So where do we go?
Shouldn’t we wait for Bucky? Nat asked them, you tensed beside her.
No Mister icy stare is, I quote, "stuck in a fucking meeting with fucking assholes." His words, not mine.
At eight in the evening? You raised a brow.
You know him, love. His work is his whole world. Steve reminded you.
Even though you didn’t really need the reminder.
Anyway, let’s get to it, I don’t have the whole night for you bitches. Sam said.
Wow thanks Sam.
I was thinking Malibu. Natasha said ignoring her friend.
Malibu? Really? It’s not even that far from San Francisco! Sam exclaimed.
Then where do you want to go, Sam?
I don’t know…
Stop lying, you’ve been practicing what you were going to say to convince them for weeks. Steve said, rolling his eyes.
What about… Dallas!
Hell no! You and Nat interjected.
Why would you even want to go there? For summer.
It’s just like it seems to be like a great place.
He just wants to see his girl.
His what?! You have a girl?! Both you and the redhead said.
It’s not my girl-
It’s not because you don’t want to do long distance. Steve replied, clearly having heard about this woman before.
What’s her name?
Monica.
Great name.
So?
It’s still a no. Natasha rejected him. Any other proposition?
New Orleans?
Why not! You answered with a smile.
I love it but also guys there are going to be so many people. Any other ideas? Did Bucky have any?
He would probably say Jersey City so that he can go back to work if anything goes wrong.
Remember when we went to Philadelphia last year and he flew back to New York because there was a problem with the security cameras of the building? Sam asked Steve.
How could I forget? This asshole left with the rental car.
Okay. Enough about this idiot. Let’s think about new ideas and talk about it Wednesday.
Fine for us.
Oh and one last thing. Bucky better be connected too. Natasha added before disconnecting from the call. This isn’t going to work.
What? Why?
Girl, we can’t agree on a destination, Bucky isn’t even trying to participate in the organization. I bet that Sam is still going to say Dallas and Steve, bless him, will agree to basically anything. It’s never going to make it out of the group chat.
I’m going to find somewhere we will all love.
Good luck with that. Your best friend said, standing up with her laptop in her arms. I will think about it too.
~~~
You were walking home with your laptop bag over your shoulder when your phone pinged.
Could you please go get my delivery at the bookstore?
The one around the corner?
Yep thank you, bitch.
You better bring back some of the little treats from the bakery near your office.
Already got them.
You laughed softly at that, changing your itinerary to the bookstore. When you walked in, the little bell on the door rang, signalling your presence.
Hi! Welcome to La Vie en Rose bookstore! How can I help you? The woman at the counter greeted you.
Hi, I’m coming for an order placed for Natasha Romanoff. It should have arrived today.
Let me check. She typed on the keyboard, looking for Nat’s order. Yes, it arrived this morning. Let me go get it for you.
While you waited, you walked around the shop, looking at the books on display. Your feet brought you in front of the shelves reserved for the travel guides. You looked through the selection until your eyes fell on the space reserved for the travel guides. The words « road trip » caught your stare. Bingo.
Here it is. The woman told you with Nat’s book in her hands. Oh, I see you found the travel collection.
Yes. Do you have any recommendations for a road trip?
She smiled at you knowingly and grabbed one guide. Here. I tried this one last year with my girlfriend. It has great travel plans.
Well I’m going to trust you on this and take it.
~~~
On Wednesday.
You had talked with Natasha about your plan and she absolutely loved it. You knew she was going to support you to convince the boys.
She connected to the call while you brought two glasses of wine to the coffee table before sitting down on the floor next to her. Sam and Steve connected too.
Hi girls. Sam greeted you with his signature smile. How are you?
Everything is great. Nat replied for the both of you while you nodded. Oh Sam- you know the girl I told you about on Monday?
The perfect blonde woman at work?
Yes! Well guess what?
You did it?
She did what? Bucky’s voice interrupted the conversation.
You tensed at his voice, shaking off the feeling with a sip of your glass.
She had another affair at work.
Nat you gotta stop that. HR will get on your ass. He said.
You watched his part of the screen. He was obliviously in his office, the large windows behind him let you see a part of New York’s skyline. He was wearing one of his signature white shirts, his tie loosened.
Blah blah blah. You’re just a party pooper. Anyway that’s not why we gathered tonight. Or in the middle of the afternoon for you guys.
Yeah if we could finish that quickly, I have places to go.
Every single one of you rolled your eyes. You cleared your throat.
So, we were thinking about a destination we would all enjoy.
She did all the thinking. Nat said, eating a peanut.
We know. Came from the three men at the same time.
Fuck you!
Anyway. Obviously we all want to go to different places. So what if… we did a road trip? The five of us together. You guys could send me some of the places you really want to go and I can do the itinerary and-
Babe you’re overthinking. Natasha grabbed your hand. It’s a fantastic idea.
Yeah I’m in. Sam agreed.
Me too. I just want to be with you guys.
Owwww.
Shut up. Steve said, his cheeks reddening.
Bucky what do you think? Sam asked.
Yeah whatever. Was his only reply.
You fought the urge to insult him. Great. Then we got a plan. Natasha concluded.
We’re going on a road trip!
