A Lesson on the Difference Between Shame and Guilt‼️
Shame focuses on the self stating "I am bad" and breeds cyclical self-destructive behavior out of the belief that oneself is immoral. Guilt, however, focuses on the behavior stating "I've done something bad" and is based in our sense of morality.
In sum, an individual who feels shame views themselves as a bad person, whereas an individual who is guilty views themselves as a good person who has done something bad.
One cannot navigate through life harboring shame for the wrongs they've committed, lest they be doomed to continue making poor decisions in contempt for themselves creating a toxic cycle of bad feelings about the self and bad behaviors.
Rather one must be culpable and acknowledge their guilt and wrongdoings as in opposition to their morality and character. Thus allowing one to learn from mistakes made, make amends where necessary, and implement positive behavioral change so that their actions align with their sense of morality.
There is a healthy degree of guilt necessary to keep our behaviors in check, but letting it fester into shame is extremely harmful to the self and counterproductive to self-growth.
Linking Christianity to a Predating Religious Faith...
The wise men who traveled from the east to worship the newly born Christ were first described in the Bible as being Magi, which is a word tracing back etymologically to the Avestan language of Persia. It is said that the wise men, or the Magi, traveled from the east to Judea to worship baby Jesus, directly east from Judea is Persia.
From the information regarding the etymology of the word magi along with the geographical locations of both Judea and Persia we can infer that these Magi traveled from Persia to Judea.
In Persia, Magi was the title given to priests of the empires religion, Zoroastrianism, a since lost religious faith due to the Muslim conquest of Persia involving the persecution of Zoroastrians and the desecration of their scriptures and places of worship.
All of this information considered, that would indicate that the wise men who came bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to celebrate the birth of Christ and to worship him as Savior of man and Son of God were Zoroastrian priests.
Zoroastrian faith predates both Christianity and Judaism as the the world's first monotheistic religion, and it parallels the Judeo-Christian belief in messianic theology.
This all stands to support the notion that the God depicted in Christian faith and the God depicted in Zoroastrian faith are one in the same.
So after all is said and done, what is mental illness? We know that mental disorders exhibit consistent clusters of symptoms. We know that many disorders feature distinctive neural signatures in the brain. We know that many disorders express distinctive patterns of brain activity. We have gained some insight into the genetic underpinnings of mental disorders. We can treat persons with mental disorders using medications and somatic therapies that act uniquely on their symptoms but exert no effects in healthy people. We know that specific types of psychotherapy lead to clear improvements in patients suffering from specific types of disorders. And we know that, left untreated, these disorders cause anguish, misery, disability, violence, even death. Thus, mental disorders are abnormal, enduring, harmful, treatable, feature a biological component, and can be reliably diagnosed. I belive this should satisfy anyone's definition of medical illness.
