I need to talk about Mustang and all the men in Fullmetal alchemist

ok we all know the mangaka is a woman and like one of the best mangaka ever so everyone is so well written but like when you look at these characters there is so much that is show not tell that you honestly don’t notice until you really take a close look at them and it adds a whole new layer to the atory

like we all know Roy Mustang. Womanizing mini skirt loving PTSD filled Riza loving man. Ok take a closer look

his womanizing play boy act is an act, a persona he puts on to become unassuming and make people belive he would never be a threat. It’s honestly a great job he does to make sure no one knows of his plans to become the leader of Amestris.

where did Mustang grow up again? A brothel you say. A brothel that doubles as a spy and intel gathering operation. Where women used their sexuality to make themselves unassuming and unthreatening. Oh you know like Mustang does in the millitary

and this shit is never said out loud. The fact that Roy’s fake womanizing comes from the women who raised him and taught him all his secret trades. And it’s not something that is too touched on. Mustang growing up in a brothel is more of a joke in most of the fandom if anything but god you can see the impact of it on his story and personality in the millitary

okay but imagine how inconvenient the streets of Central City, Amestris, is. Like yeah yeah country wide alchemy circle aside- can you IMAGINE the traffic? Like for the Love of Truth can we add another lane on this road?? The cars are backed up for miles! The urban planning board must be the sorriest people in the world. They got no clue what an alchemist circle looks like BUT the Fuhrer keeps showing up for an ominous visit every time they try to get a modicum of reasonable city layout. The zoning laws have got to be pure evil.

Al and Ed's dynamic is so funny bc Edward's got such a complex about being the older one even tho the difference is by one year and he thinks himself a single mother of one raising Al by himself and he needs to protect his little baby brother at all costs then Alphonse is like holding Ed's leash and telling him no when he barks/lunges at passers-by and is making sure he gets his rabies shots and doesn't die doing something stupid also protecting him at all costs etc

One of my favorite details in FMA is Edward learning from techniques used against him, and adapting them for himself. Big examples I can think of off the top of my head are: deducing how Scar's deconstruction alchemy worked, which would then become one of his go-to moves; failing to deconstruct Buccaneer's arm because of northern automail's different material, then when he gets northern automail of his own using that against Scar; and imitating Greed's ultimate shield on his automail when fighting against Pride. I think it's a satisfying callback/setup-payoff every time, effectively shows Ed as really intelligent in a cool and interesting way, and if one considers these "power-ups", then it's doing so in a much more novel and compelling way than "he can punch gooder". Also not even specific to FMA I just think it's an incredibly cool thing for a character to do.
