I'm not great with words. I love and appreciate them and that's why I read. But I'm never able to express my thoughts and emotions as eloquently as most people. Too bad for you, because I'm going to use the seventeen words I do know to explain this piece inspired by a conversation with @ roxannecarol (on Instagram) and one of her cosplays and recent posts. ⠀

This is Nina Zenik from the Grisha series by @lbardugo ⠀

I've drawn Nina before and thought I got her as close to right as I could. I was wrong. I pictured Nina with a curvy, hourglass figure that could squeeze into a size 10 if she tried and it would POP all the good stuff for your viewing pleasure. Wtf? Leigh doesn't specify Nina's "size", but a sh*t tonne of people out there were reading her descriptions of Nina and seeing themselves. And they're no size 10. These girls are big and round and curvy, but not just "all in the right places". Big boobs and thick thighs are not where beautiful/pretty/sexy stops. If you're a size 10 and you resonate with Nina, that's awesome. Nina's awesome. We should all want to be like her. But when I learn that plus size women (REAL PLUS SIZE WOMEN, NOT PLUS SIZE MODELS) are ecstatic to FINALLY have a character that is described like they'd describe themselves, how tf could I take that away?? This is my attempt (and I say attempt because I know I could have done better, but I'm still learning how to art every day) at my new Nina with my new eyes.⠀

Do I still see myself as Nina even though I'm sometiiimes a size 10? Absolutely! I love waffles. I love making jokes. I love making people happy. And I aspire to be as strong and confident as she is. But Nina would want EVERYONE to feel that way and she'd do everything in her power to make it so. This post is me using MY power to make it so.⠀
