In memes where text or panels are edited the originals are always the funniest, case in point:
UBI needs to happen. via antiwork
I think most importantly, it would give us the leverage to say “no”. To walk away from bad jobs and abusive managers. To refuse to work in unsafe environments. To demand better pay.
To demand better, because the options are no longer “suck it up” or “die”.
The counter-argument: Not having UBI is in the interests of those in power who want to do anything to the people they are in power over in order to remain in power.
If the greed of the few should come before the need of the many.
There was this kid that used to be my neighbor (let’s call him Ivan) and he was a typical cishet white boy gamer kid, and he was kind of an asshole sometimes. But let me tell you, Ivan was also one of the best lgbtq allies ive ever met? Like he was kind of a dick but he was the kind of person to be in a group of people when someone makes a shitty joke and look that person straight in the eyes and say “that’s transphobic, Kevin. Stop being a dick” without missing a beat.
It was just nice to see. Like I told him I was bisexual and he was like “that’s dope. Tell me if I need to beat anyone up for being a dick to you. Anyway, let’s go set things on fire in Minecraft”
He’d be mean to someone and then someone else would call the kid they were bullying a homo and he’d stop what he was doing and be like “there’s nothing wrong with being gay, don’t be homophobic, Billy” and then go back to trashing this poor kid. It was so fucking surreal. I miss him. I’m kinda sad we fell out of touch. Stay strong, Ivan. You… woke middle school bully?
LITERALLY THO

I’ve noticed lately that it’s often Americans who leave tags like “I don’t even care if it’s made up” on posts I make that are not particularly unbelievable, but are pretty specific to my way of life or corner of the world (like the one about the cheese vendor). It reminds me of that tweet that was circulating, that said Americans have a “medieval peasant scale of worldview”—I mean, if you don’t want to be perceived this way by the rest of the world maybe don’t go around social media saying that if a cultural concept or way of life sounds unfamiliar it must be made up?
It’s the imbalance that’s annoying, because like—when I mentioned having no mobile network around here I had people giving me info about Verizon to fix my problem. I post some rural pic and someone says it must be somewhere in the Midwest because the Southwest doesn’t look like this. My post about my postwoman has thousands of Americans assuming it’s about the USPS. On my post about my architect there’s someone saying “it’s because architecture is an impacted major” and other irrelevant stuff about how architecture is taught in the US. This kind of thing happens so so so often and I’m expected to be familiar with the concepts of Verizon and the Midwest and impacted majors and the USPS and meanwhile I make a post about my daily life and Americans in the notes are debating like “dunno if real. it sounds made up”
Going online for the rest of the world means having to keep in mind an insane amount of hyperspecific trivia about American culture while going online for Americans means having to keep in mind that the rest of the world really exists I guess
Fun history facts: One of the 31 people arrested at Stonewall on June 28th 1969 was American folk singer Dave Van Ronk, who was not at the Stonewall Inn at the time and was cis & straight as far as I'm aware. He'd been eating dinner at a nearby restaurant when he noticed a riot happening, said "Well I suppose I should go see what the fuss is about," stepped outside, and immediately started throwing bricks at the cops.
Okay I was simply scrolling because Sri Lanka is fucking trending but as usual international media is exoticizing our struggles and focusing on the “people swimming in the president’s pool” instead of informing the world about why an entire fucking country (amidst an economic collapse) stormed to Colombo and asked the president to step down.
First things first. Know the context.
There is an economic crisis going on in Sri Lanka. We have declared bankruptcy.
I’ve already made a post about what this means for the country. This means high inflation. No electricity. Princes are sky rocketing.
No fuel. I repeat. No fuel. People are fucking dying in queues.
But even without fuel, people came to Colombo. People fucking walked to Colombo for miles and miles to join the protest.
There were attempts to stop the protest. We have the right for assembly. We have the right to freedom of expression. But no. The government stopped fuel dispense (as if we had fuel lol) to stop people. They imposed an unconstitutional “police curfew” to stop the protest. Why is no one talking about this shit??
But people still came. I don’t see the international media reporting about the effort and energy and passion that went into this.
We built a city. Do you fucking know that? We built a city called “GotaGoGama (loosely translates to: Gota-Go-Home-Ville). We built a city months ago since the country collapsed.
Recap of May 09th when GotaGoGama was attacked by Mahinda Rajapaksha (then PM) and his goons.
I repeat. The protest on 09th July is not the first.
We’ve been asked the president to step down so more competent people can take over and do something to help us. This protest yesterday was not new. It’s not random. It’s an act of people giving up. The storming of the presidential palace is not anger. It’s taking back of power.
As for the swimming pools? And People making fun of the protestors for working out in the president’s gym, eating the food in his kitchen and swimming in his pool?
What about this?
For people making fun of the youth who are taking a dip at the swimming pool or playing the piano at the president’s house…For those are the condemning the protestors who set the PM’s house on fire (we still have no visual proof this happened) - all I have to say is this:
THIS -
These leaders we asked to step down today (who still haven’t btw. No. Not yet. Nothing official yet), they are corrupt beyond compare. The president had “said” he “will” step down not he 13th. But we don’t know anything yet.
These are people who not only brought the country to economic collapse. But the Rajapaskhas are responsible for millions of lives that were lost during the civil war. These are people who have taken from my country until there is nothing more for us to give.
I’m really grateful that you are all finally “talking about us”. I’m glad the international media and the whole world is finally watching. But your view is narrow. Your sight is short sighted.
International media. People of the world.
Do better.
Do fucking better.
Because we, Sri Lankans, are doing our fucking best right now.
Alright was no one going to tell me that in the middle of the Nevada desert is an old cemetery that contains the bodies of a bunch of miners who died in a fire and next door is a haunted clown motel
Why are we still setting horror movies in generic Victorian houses in the woods when this is a real place in the world

Moomins should be real. Moomins should small terrestrial mammals with social habits similar to ducks. I want to see a row of mug-sized Moomins walk past me in a single file line while I'm at the park so that I can go "Oh my God...it's the Moomins.."
