When massive trauma hits, some people try to find any way to make sense of what seems senseless. Find any semblance of control, of responsibility. Lilo may be blaming herself (unfairly) for her parents’ death. This was the only connection she could make, the only thing she could have had any control over, so to her it must have been her fault. If only she was a good girl. If only she did the right thing. Then maybe… It’s very very hard to lose a mindset like that even when it’s the most irrational thing, even when it hurts you, because then you’re left with nothing.

And when you’re six your pattern recognition skills are a work in progress. Lilo sees that type of fish one day and as it swims away it starts to rain; connection made.

“Lilo, why is this so important to you?”

Lilo is late for what must have been a semi incomprehensible reason that, as adults, we can see isn’t firmly based in reality. Instead of shutting her down and telling her off, or dismissing it as a useless excuse, he asks why it is so important to her. Excellent approach to dealing with young children

And Nani so obviously gets it. Maybe she doesn’t always get what Lilo does specifically, but she gets it. She doesn’t say, “Pudge doesn’t need a sandwich,” she says, “We’re out of peanut butter, will this work instead?” I’m certain she was utterly confused the first time Lilo did this - but that once she explained, she understood completely.

There’s a scene later on where Nani is rushing out of the house to go somewhere, and she opts to go on foot - despite running past a perfectly working car, which would certainly be much more efficient. Even if it’s not as emphasized by the narrative, Nani’s got trauma of her own that she’s working through. It just manifests differently because she’s older, and because she also has to be a guardian to Lilo on top of everything else.
