I'm about three quarters of the way through Kuang's Katabasis and I'm so glad I didn't read the reviews until I was already a few chapters in because, jesus christ.

AS IF THAT'S NOT THE POINT??

And people have said she was rightly punished for being a bad woman, as if how she was treated had anything to do with her own actions. She was punished by Grimes for being an attractive woman. Nothing else. If she slept with him, he would have punished her anyway. Her own view of herself , her own actions, and scoffing at feminism had nothing to do with it.

The ONLY thing she could have done to maybe prevent it was keep a distance, but its pretty clear in the text, if she had, Grimes would have punished her for that.

The closest thing she experienced to 'punishment' was from another woman who she looked down on before begging her for help. And EVEN THEN she was offered an escape route, but Alice chose to stay under Grimes because he was her best shot.

And he was, he really way her best chance for success. And he used that to abuse her and punish her.

There are hundreds of Alices in the real world and none of them deserve to be abused for not thinking like a "good feminist". While in my male-dominated-science-major college years I sometimes thought I could ride the line like Alice thought she could. But that line doesn't exist. It never did. Like Alice, I was sheltered from the worst of it. My professors, men and women, were actually very supportive and looked out for me, knowing i was one of only two women in my major out of 120ish. But unlike Alice, my male peers kept reminding me where I stood with them.

I didn't deserve to be punished for being a woman in a space built by men for men. That didn't stop my peers, my classmates, my friends, from doing it.

Alice didn't deserve what Grimes put her through (INCLUDING HUMAN EXPERIMENTATION THAT COULD HAVE KILLED HER) but she still experienced it and if she had tried to leave, she would have been punished again just differently.
