I saw The Lost Boys earlier this month and I still can't stop thinking about it.

And I'm mad cause when someone asked if it truly was technically amazing like everyone was saying, I just downplayed the flying (cause honestly, seen that before) but didn't think to say "Hell yeah the lighting was phenomenal! And the set changes were seemless and not a single moment was wasted."

I think I was overwhelmed by the character work they put into the show - like compared to the movie (okay I last watched it in middle school so my memories are vague), I kind of liked how the musical gave life to the characters better than the movie? I liked Star more in the musical for example. She actually had a personality imo.

Belong to Someone and that whole scene, and the final image on the stage at the very end? Those two moments have been living rent free in my mind for the last three weeks let me just say. The depth of character in those moments....I never cried at the movie but I was a mess in that theatre let me just say.

But anyway yeah the lighting...fucking phenomenal. The color palettes, the use of the haze and fog, it was....gorgeous. Also some reallt fun lighting instruments were used.

I want to go see it again so badly 😭

Saw these two amazing shows today. MHE was cute and adorable as fuck and beautifully designed. I saw three understudies and they were all phenomenal.

But The Lost Boys is gonna be living rent free (lol that's a deep dive pun) in my head for the next few weeks. First off THE LIGHTING. I knew from pictures I was gonna love Jen Schriever's style but holy shit it was so good and the fucking mover and haze work was absolute chef's kiss.

Going into it I spent my middle school years watching it over and over again (and crushing hopelessly on Corey Haim despite the nearly 20 year gap between when it came out and when I was introduced to it). So of course I didn't want it to ruin the source material in any way. Folks, it fucking knocked it out of the park. Hell it expanded on it. I don't know if it's cause middle school me missed the subtext about certain storylines, but damn did it hit harder than I realized. I fucking cried like 3 times. And the way they gave Star so much more depth to her character was wonderful. I always thought she was the least interesting person in that movie but here she shined.

There were just so many moments that were incredible. The music might not be the most amazing thing I've heard, but it is still great. I just....it blew me away and I can't wait to see it again.

For those who have missed it, a tourist in Hawaii decided it would be fun to chuck a rock (a BIG rock) at a monk seal. He missed, but he was captured on video, and when told it was illegal to interfere with them, said "I'm rich, I can pay the fine."

Is the best part that he got doxxed? No.

Is the best part that he got tracked down by a local and beaten? No.

Arrested on state at federal charges, looking at up to 5 years and 50K? Nope.

The best part is the local city council's reaction.

And the best part of that is the look on the attorney's face.

After the incident, another video went viral showing what appeared to be that man getting a beating. The Maui Police Department said they had no record of any reports of disorderly conduct or assault related to the monk seal incident.

Even the local police are being cool about this.

i absolutely love how intertwined essek and caleb's stories are this season. these moments in particular capture the essence of their journeys thus far: accepting the death that they have brought upon their families. the broken expression on their faces, the shaking hands as they reach out to who is now lost forever; these men could not be any more similar.

essek, whose primary motivation for stealing the beacon was to find a cure for his mother, failed in his pursuit, was forced to kill her with his own hands, and has lost her soul forever. caleb, whose primary function was to brutally assassinate empire traitors, was so heavily indoctrinated that he believed that damning his family to a fire of his own making was an honor. while essek and caleb were both pushed to these circumstances by their nations, either through an oppressive religion or extremist propaganda, it was ultimately their decisions that caused their families' deaths, their hands that took their lives, and their eyes that watched them die.

essek and caleb are seemingly irredeemable, their truest sense of self now buried beneath their rage and suffering. if season one captured them at their lowest points, then season two will show us if they will choose to descend deeper into the pain caused by their own failures or if they will choose to claw their way out of it and remake themselves anew. their journeys moving forward will be fascinating to witness.

As much as I think the modify memory in the campaign was horrible, there’s something much more horrifying about Trent convincing these kids to murder their parents without any magical aid at all in the show. This man genuinely groomed and brainwashed these kids into being assassins using tactics that irl abusers apply, to the point that at least one of his assassins called him “father”.

I like that this episode gave the audience nowhere to hide from who Caleb used to be

with the campaign, there was a degree of separation between the audience and what Caleb was describing. the simple nature of the show's format provided the audience tacit permission to downplay and soften Caleb's story, even while Caleb himself tries to impress on everyone that he believed in what he did. ("It was a good time. We believed in the Empire, we were going to keep it strong. He was cruel. He hurt us a lot. Made us go through extreme circumstances, but we got strong." / "He made you executioners?" "We wanted to be.")

the animation provides no such luxury. we are given graphic, up-close depictions of the kinds of things Bren did to people as a Volstrucker. the camera lingers on the violence. nowhere to hide. that's also why it's so important that they removed the false memory Trent gave Bren and replaced it with the trio simply taking him at his word.

what happened to Bren was a horror and a tragedy, and the show makes you look at it, really look at it. it says "don't look away. this is what was done to him. this is what he did. this is what he believed in. will you accept him still?"
