Some old fart retired hockey player goes on ESPN and does an interview where he talks about how gay DEI initiatives are unfair and are ruining Hockey by keeping the good ole boys from getting their chance to prove themselves on the ice.

Ilya, as the captain of the gayest NHL team, is asked for comment on this. Of course, this is half way through the season while the Cens are sitting first in their division and second in the league. So Ilya says, “Ah, yes, I can see how he would think that. It seems unfair that being queer is clearly such an advantage for hockey players. We are just much better players, and having so many of us on one team, while very fun and nice for us, does seem to be putting us above everyone else in the standings. Perhaps more teams could play well if they had gay players? The Admirals are okay, but they only have one and we have four, so it is not quite fair.”

There is a rampant debate online over whether Ilya actually understands that the original comments were homophobic or if he genuinely believes that people think gay guys are too good at hockey. People also start speculating about who the fourth gay player is because Luca hasn’t actually come out publicly yet.

Scott Hunter has to put out a statement that he doesn’t believe his homosexuality has had any impact, positive or negative, on his athletic ability even though he believes being out of the closet and in a fulfilling relationship has made it easier to focus on the game.

Months ago, in you "Who is Dick's favorite brother" meta you said the following 'Dick is Bruce's baby, actually, not Damian. In this essay I will...'. Any chance of us getting that essay?

Lol well it's definitely not as long! The short version is that Dick is Bruce's favorite person in the world, while he has literally stated in canon that he doesn't even like Damian.

The long version is threefold:

Bruce: The Bruce who existed before Jason's death was a fundamentally different person than the Bruce who exists now. A lot of that simply has to do with DC writing him differently - colder, more "badass" - but it makes total sense as character growth (or character devolution, arguably) after the traumatic loss of a child. Bruce with Dick and Jason is warm and affectionate. He's playful. He's significantly more emotionally available. He has a much greater capacity for letting a child into his heart and showing it. By the time Tim came along, let alone Cass/Damian/Duke, that part of Bruce is gone, or at least very deep in hiding.

Dick: Dick is an extremely expressive, affectionate person. More importantly, he was raised with basically normal parents who weren't trying to turn him into an assassin. Dick was raised with the expectation that when he was upset, he would be comforted, and so he was significantly more likely to turn to Bruce for said comfort. It's a lot easier to baby a kid who allows himself to be babied; Damian would never stand for it.

Damian: He's a little better about it now, but when they first met, Damian would never under any circumstances present himself to his father as 1. a child, 2. vulnerable, or 3. needing him to be anything but the Bat. But more to the point...almost immediately after they met, Bruce "died." The person who connected emotionally to Damian, who gives him the comfort and validation and playfulness and affection that a child needs...is Dick. (And to a lesser extent, Alfred.) It's not that Damian doesn't need Bruce - it's painfully clear that he desperately wants his father to be a better parent to him. It's just that he got that early bonding with Dick instead, and also he's 14 now and not a cute little kid anymore, and his emotional needs are different. (Which is a problem, because Bruce generally connects quite well to children but experiences catastrophic relationship failure when they become teens: see Dick, Jason, Damian, and of course his train wreck of a relationship with Steph, the Ultimate Teen. Tim has solved this problem by aggressively trying to be Bruce's parent instead.)

114 people died in the Hyatt Regency collapse, and in the US it's the third largest structural collapse fatality count, behind 9/11 and the Pemberton Mill collapse in 1860.

I've learned about this tragedy in my physics classes, to demonstrate tensile strength, and as a reminder about the importance of calculations being done right. I've also learned about it in my legal classes as an example of construction defect lawsuits. I've seen it referenced in disaster response classes.

Between AI and the current Presidential administration, we're barrelling right back towards this nightmare.

There are multiple errors that resulted in this collapse, but these stand out to me:

1. Kansas City was facing high unemployment and needed to attract jobs and business into the city. So the planning and inspection departments may have looked too closely at the designs.

2. An engineering firm too lazy to double check their designs or design changes by the manufacturer before approving them. The error that resulted in the collapse was one that the owner of the engineering firm said that a "first year engineering student" would spot.

3. The steel manufacturer treating preliminary plans as final plans, not verifying the math on their end.

The bridges' original design could only hold 60% of the minimum load required by city code. The design changes recommended by the manufacturer halved that. Less than a year and 3 weeks from opening to the public, the whole thing collapse.

Articles about the collapse say that everyone "trusted" the other party to have done the calculations correctly.

A significant portion of the population trusts what the computer or AI tells them, without checking. Imprecisely calibrated AI hallucinate information. The US economy is going into a downturn and federal regulatory agencies are being gutted.

We are going to see the Hyatt Regency Collapse repeat over and over for decades, not just in buildings, but in medicine, manufacturing, the environment, etc.

Some of this we're just going to have to weather, but the message for AI users comes straight from IBM (once the world's leading computer manufacturer) back in 1979:

"A Computer Cannot Be Held Accountable. Therefore A Computer Should Never Make A Management Decision."

The owner of the engineering firm that designed the Hyatt Regency spent the rest of his life lecturing on the disaster, to serve as a warning to his fellow engineers about the real-life consequences of sloppy design.

I don't think Sam Altman or Mark Zuckerberg or Elon Musk will have the courage or the honor to do that when OpenAI / Meta / xAI are responsible for getting people killed.

So if you're going to blindly trust the AI to do critical work tasks, I hope you're prepared to be making an apology tour for the rest of your life if it all goes wrong.

I was talking about the Hyatt Regency Collapse on Tuesday night, and while it is a valuable lesson in the importance due diligence and the horrible ramifications of negligence, it is also one of the most macabre regulation and compliance disasters in US history. The majority of the 114 people who died actually drowned.

When the walkways came down, they set off the fire alarms, which triggered the hotel's sprinklers. The hotel was hosting some kind gathering in the lobby, which was recessed, and filled with people. The debris from the walkways trapped the assembled crowd in prone positions and the recessed portion of the lobby began to take on water from the sprinkler system -- which no one could turn off. People who could have survived could not escape and subsequently drowned in the flooding lobby.

There are so many insane elements to Hyatt Regency Collapse, and I think it ranks right up there with the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire and the General Slocum disaster, both of which were the result of base negligence and either the failure to follow regulatory requirements or a dearth of safety regulations. As the prior reblogger notes, "we are barreling back towards" these nightmares -- and not just because agencies are being gutted and people rely too heavily on AI. We are also entering into era of profound deregulation. Under the guise of personal freedoms and aided by the Supreme Court, the Trump administration is stripping away the statutes intended to keep people safe from corporate greed.

Individuals are responsible for their actions, but the social contract between a government and its people is simple in this one way: a citizen agrees to limitations on his or her rights in exchange for protection. There must be regulatory constraints on the use of AI. The US government, specifically, must enact legislation to mitigate the harm caused by AI that we are already seeing. I fully expect that things will only get worse, and that there are more AI disasters on the near horizon unless Congressional leaders take reasonable steps to protect people from AI's potentially devastating impact and are prepared to override a presidential veto.
