i don't even particularly like genre romance, but it's always so weird to see people (usually, though not always, men) going 'you know REAL LIFE men don't act like the men in romance novels, right???' as if it's a gotcha.

like, yeah. obviously. real life women don't act like the women in romance novels either. it's a genre with extremely stylized and predictable character beats that exist to serve the romantic arc rather than to deeply explore or accurately reproduce human behavior. this complaint makes about as much sense as superciliously sneering that small english towns don't ACTUALLY have a murder every other week for the local eccentric to investigate.

Ya know the thing characters do before they come to consciousness? That perfect lil thing where they do that wince, and their eyes which are closed squeeze shut even tighter as their brows forrow, then they slowly open their eyes, blinking against the too-bright light, especially coupled with a soft little noise of distress… just such good shit 👌

And of course it can be followed by…

- A low moan of pain when they register it fully.

- A hand immediately going to their wound, and encountering bandages. When did that happen?

- Bleary eyes roaming about, trying to figure out where they are and how they got there.

- Jolting up, thinking they’re back in the danger or forgetting they’re injured, only to cry out in pain.

- Trying to sit up, but their arms too weak/shaky to support them and they fall back again.

- Either of the above, but before they can get that far they are stopped by hands on their shoulders and gently but firmly pressed back down.

Fanfiction is so silly. I am playing with my dolls and people are coming over to watch. Some of them even clap and give me compliments. And when I'm done playing, I can go and watch other people play with their dolls.

Here's some fun Teen Titans redesigns I did for the heck of it. I'm still working on Blackfire, and I am hoping to get around to some of the others. I know the roster of characters I have right now doesn't make any particular type of sense. But I just started drawing the characters that I like to draw and let it grow from there :)

oh, i am finally old enough to know why my parents took so long to grab their coats. why they would ask us to get ready to go only to sit down for another round of coffee. what would i tell myself, at 10 years old? it’s okay. sit down with them too. take in the extra hour with your friend and her family. when you get home, write down every moment in your diary. one day you will be older and you will be waving goodbye to your best friend, and you will turn the key to start your beat up little car engine, and you will look back over your shoulder. her hair will be blowing in the wind and she will be beautiful and you will be, for a moment, struck by all of it. what you will feel is so wide and nameless that it will engulf you. and you will think of being 14 and kicking her under the table in math every time you wanted to whisper something behind the teacher’s back. you will think about how long the days felt, and how you could hold her hand whenever you wished, but you didn’t. and you will think about all of the people you could have lingered with. and you will wish, more than you have ever felt a wish, that the universe just gave you that - more time to linger. more time to say - i love you. i know i need to leave, but i don’t want to leave you. and when i go, i am leaving a piece of my heart that lingers too.

it's not that I expect everyone to have memorized the multiple panels where she talks about how she doesn't have handles on the back (especially since comics artists ALSO weren't always consistent about how they drew her chair.) like it would be nice but not everyone is reading comics from the 90s.

but from a characterization standpoint, Babs is fiercely independent, doesn't have energy limitations or neurological stuff that would keep her from self-propelling, and has enough money to have a home gym and a modified vehicle. she's definitely not rolling around in anything that isn't a customized active chair. a lot of active chairs do have push handles on the back, or at least the option to add them, but Babs doesn't have a caregiver and she doesn't want help! they'd be extra weight for a situation she does everything in her power to avoid (someone else needing to push her chair.)

In her origin story as Oracle, Barbara is struggling with her new vulnerability and losing so much autonomy when a villain grabs the handles of her wheelchair and pushes her into traffic and she almost dies. Oracle!Babs does not have handles on her wheelchair.

so I’ve seen the “can’t kill anyone or I’ll be a monster” Batman thing. I’ve seen arguments for why that’s silly and I’ve agreed with them and I’ve seen arguments for that’s isn’t silly and I’ve agreed with them but I think an interesting interpretation is that he doesn’t mean immediately, that he’s talking about acceptable evil and how what is acceptable is always subject to change

if you have three choices, kill no one, kill only bad people, and kill anyone and you pick the lesser evil of kill only bad people then maybe that is fine. but once “kill only bad people” becomes status quo there’s now a shift in thinking and you’re next set of choices become kill only bad people, kill this person I don’t have to but is in my way preventing me from helping people, and kill anyone. you’ve already chosen the lesser evil, and this choice really isn’t that much more evil. so you chose lesser evil again. and again there’s a small frame shift in thinking.

it’s not an immediate drop into cartoon villainy. it is small steps each one easier than the last over many years until you are putting bombs in peoples necks to force them to fight for you and experimenting on children. you have to draw the line somewhere and hold it or otherwise watch it erode out from under you. it doesn’t have to be at no killing ever, but most dc heroes choose to put it there
