Synchronized Swimmers!! 😃 They still exist!!
Todays’s brainworm is this as a concept for XLOV
I realize that they can’t physically do it, but the idea in my mind is too fabulous for words. Very old Hollywood but also I think some part of me is longing for a rui and manta ray interaction.
there will never be anything as funny as the mutual disbelief between long form and short form fic writers about each other's style.
short form writers look at people writing 100k+ fics as though this is some sort of talent given as part of a fae bargain, that the commitment required shows some sort of ungodly mental fortitude.
meanwhile long form writers look at people writing 1000 word one shots like god I would cut off my left nipple to be able to say anything concisely. i would love to play with multiple ideas. free me from the shackles of this child I have birthed. i love them but I now must take them to t-ball and doctor's appointments and they're going to destroy everything I own.
in honor of wumuti's dip and the ballroom influences shown in the concept photos, @evolssluti0n on twt (with the help of quite a few others) has shared this awesome thread with lots of history and resources about ballroom culture. It's a great read--definitely check it out if you can. If you don't have twitter, you can read it here through the twitter thread reader.
A great read and I love that this fandom is actually doing this kind of education instead of just coopting cultural elements without reference or context
I came back for you.
Aww i forgot how much i loved these two. Thanks op
the idea that restrooms, locker rooms, etc need to be single-sex spaces in order for women to be safe is patriarchy's way of signalling to men & boys that society doesn't expect them to behave themselves around women. it is directly antifeminist. it would be antifeminist even if trans people did not exist. a feminist society would demand that women should be safe in all spaces even when there are men there.
btw this is maybe the single most key distinguishing feature of the terfy strains of radical feminism, the seed all the rest of it springs out of: they have absolutely no faith in the ability of feminism to actually destroy patriarchy. they do not think feminism can truly build a better world. they cannot really even imagine that possibility. they think patriarchy is an inevitable natural consequence of unchangeable biological facts, and therefore the goal of feminism can only be to mitigate the worst effects of patriarchy, not to get rid of it.
they can imagine a society where women get some designated safe spaces without men around. they cannot imagine a society where the presence of men is not inherently a danger to women.
“Frances and I were considering attending a Lesbian/Feminist conference this summer, when we were notified that no boys over ten were allowed. This presented logistic as well as philosophical problems for us, and we sent the following letter: Sisters: Ten years as an interracial lesbian couple has taught us both the dangers of an oversimplified approach to the nature and solutions of any oppression, as well as the danger inherent in an incomplete vision. Our thirteen-year-old son represents as much hope for our future world as does our fifteen-year-old daughter, and we are not willing to abandon him to the killing streets of New York City while we journey west to help form a Lesbian-Feminist vision of the future world in which we can all survive and flourish.”
— Audre Lorde, Sister Outsider: “Man Child: A Black Lesbian Feminist’s Response." (This essay in particular was apparently first published in 19-fucking-79, which is how long this conversation's been going on.)

I’ve been meaning to assemble this panorama and correct the very difficult lighting (especially for a very retro iPhone 5 camera) for ten years and this post reminded me to get around to it.
On June 26th, 2015, a completely foreign world to now, I was driving home with NPR on, and pulled into a grocery store parking lot.
I had just heard via the radio the Obergefell v. Hodges decision which legalized gay marriage.
Texas was celebrating with a double rainbow.
All love is beautiful.
A truly under-appreciated cdrama is Are You The One. I don’t know why it didn’t get more attention given that the cast is excellent, its part of that very trendy sub-genre of “FL girlbossing it at some traditional culturally significant to China industry (porcelain),” and the premise is wonderfully batshit.
Law and Order Prince takes amnesiac concubine of an elusive bandit hostage to lure out his enemy, by pretending to be her merchant husband. Unfortunately she is one of those people who can’t do anything at any less than 1000% so she wifes so hard while building a business empire (having correctly concluded that her “husband” is completely inept and best kept as a beloved pet at home) that all his schemes are bound to unravel and his life’s ambition changes from supreme ruler of all to househusband, and his latent femdom kinks are awakened. Comedy gold. Romance goals. Everyone should see it.

My distant relatives have literally been leeching off of me and drinking my blood for hundreds of years. AITA for not wanting to give them anymore of my blood?
Hi chat, you’re never going to believe this. Different poster than OP here, but I’d also like to know if I’m an asshole for not wanting to let my relatives and their weird students use my blood. I just want it all to end (and if the world ends too, would that be so bad?)
Hypothetically, how big of an age gap is too big? Is my feisty girlfriend too young for me if I’m over a thousand years older than her? Also, is it weird that she used to be my pet?
Help - I think my girlfriend might bring about the apocalypse! Should that be a dealbreaker? But she’s so small and cute.
Mod: OP please read the forum FAQ before posting. We have many posts that already asked and answered this question. If you’ve read through all those previous posts and still didn’t find an answer, then please provide more information about your situation so we can get more context and provide you with better answers. “My girlfriend/boyfriend/partner/etc. might cause the apocalypse” is overly broad.
xlov wumuti
Why is umuti the hot goth girl i was in my heart/wanted to date in the 90s? Why is he just walking around mentally cosplaying a character in The Craft?

its very funny seeing people on this website go "ah yes, the two gay pieces of media that have aired, heartstopper and now heated rivalry. we finally have another!" like if you guys just opened your eyes to tv shows made outside of north america you would be feasting right now but that 1 inch tall barrier of subtitles is just insurmountable
Honest question, what *is* the abject fear of subtitles about? I understand the difficulty that makes it not worth the effort for people with disabilities around reading. But everyone else?
There really really ought to be a book about how the staple crops of different civilizations shape and influence those civilizations, and I really want to read it.
Salt: A World History by Mark Kurlansky and A History of the World in 6 Glasses by Tom Standage (three are alcohol, three have caffeine) are not quite that, but may still be of interest?
I read Salt back in the day and it's so so good, second the rec. I have heard of 6 Glasses and not read it but I am sure I would probably love it. Gotta see if the library has it. Thank you!
Gonna throw Empire of Cotton by Sven Beckert in the ring here! You'll never see the modern world the same way again.
A Short History Of The World According To Sheep by Sally Coulthard blew my mind. So many things are tied to wool and sheep and weaving and so many words and phrases are tied to wool, people have no idea.
Example words which come from textiles/weaving, if not specifically wool (go look them up!): subtle, shoddy, tabby, Brazil, rocket, twit, warped, going batty, on tenterhooks, text...
I'll throw in a rec for Pickled, Potted, and Canned by Sue Shephard - a very interesting look at food preservation and how the availability of different types of food preservation shaped cultures and cuisines.
I have to add Fruit From The Sands by Robert N Spengler III - about the earliest crops and their transmission throughout Asia; and Ten Tomatoes That Changed The World by William Alexander - this one is just the history of the tomato in Western culture from a guy who is reeeeally into growing tomatoes (*will* make you stop buying tomatoes at the supermarket though).
“chuffed doesnt mean what you think it means”
it means exactly what i think it means its just some stupid word that literally has two definitions that mean the opposite thing
what the hell
This makes me really chuffed
This post is quite egregious
Well I’m nonplussed by this whole post.
goddamnit.
all of you go to hell
And you wonder why i am boggled at times
These are called contronyms! A word that is its own opposite.
Why the fuck do these exist
One theory is that the sarcastic use of the word became exceedingly prevalent and because another dictionary definition.
Are you telling me that we were such sarcastic shits it literally changed our language.
