“Knowing that they were losing “valuable product” due to their slaves’ propensity to swim, slave owners began taking drastic steps to protect their property. One of these steps was to instill a fear of the water by dunking disobedient slaves in water until they nearly drowned and by creating fear through stories of creatures living in the water. Thus it didn’t take long to excise or destroy the West African swimming tradition from African- American culture. The Jim Crow laws that were enacted after The Civil War prohibited blacks from the popular seaside resorts in places like Atlantic City, N.J. and Revere Beach, Mass. And by the 20th Century, as the swimming pool began to gain in popularity in the United States, the color line prohibited blacks from enjoying this pleasant recreational skill.
In addition, self-segregation also played a role in limiting those of African ancestry from getting in the water. I remember my Aunt saying to stay away from the pool because, “black folk don’t swim.””
Such a long and consistent history of anti-Blackness and swimming. Long before police openly assaulted little black girls in McKinney, GoodWhitePeople™ were enforcing White Supremacy and segregating swimming pools.
Motel manager, James “Jimmy” Brock, pouring acid into a swimming pool to drive black people away from a “Swim In” protest, in St. Augustine, Florida on June 18, 1964.
Next time you hear someone ask questions like, “Why don’t black people swim?” Or “Why are so many black people afraid of dogs?” And, “Why are there do so many black people live in poverty?”…..let ‘em know that those aren’t coincidences. These things didn’t just happen naturally, all on their own. There’s a reason for it, and you don’t have to be an historian to know they’re all interconnected through slavery, endemic racism and persistently racist cultural norms.
Black women are called, in the folklore that so aptly identifies one’s status in society, “the mules of the world,” because we have been handed the burdens that everyone else– everyone else– refused to carry. We have also been called “Matriarchs,” “Superwomen,” and “Mean and Evil Bitches.” Not to mention “Castraters” and “Sapphire’s Mama.” When we have pleaded for understanding, our character has been distorted; when we have asked for simple caring, we have been handed empty inspirational appellations, then stuck in the farthest corner. When we have asked for love, we have been given children. In short, even our plainer gifts, our labors of fidelity and love, have been knocked down our throats. To be an artist and a black women, even today, lowers our status in many respects, rather than raises it: and yet, artists we will be.

Amazon Go’s “just walk out” technology sounds like a headache for shoppers of color
Minority shoppers know this feeling all too well: A store employee singling us out, continually checking on us, issuing warnings. Store managers operate under the false assumption that people of color are more likely to steal.
It’s an effort known as “loss prevention,” but it looks and acts like racial profiling. Which is why a store like Amazon Go is exciting, yet unnerving.
“In a world where even Oprah has been profiled for walking around a store, there are lots of people who might not want to risk trusting a store to treat them fairly,” tech CEO Anil Dash said in an email.
White people who have never been “randomly” followed around at a Walgreens may have no problem walking into a store, grabbing an item and leaving. But shoppers of color, who already see enough unwanted attention, may have their doubts. Read more

Honestly, it’s irresponsible to treat Trump supporters in any way that suggests their actions and views are excusable. The ones you know, shame in both public and private. Shun them. Large-scale social enforcement works. Bigots’ going unrebuked is why we’re in this mess.
The deluge of desperate, whining pleas from so many Trump supporters circulating right now to not “bully” them, to extend them respect as though they didn’t just vote to strip it alongside actual, tangible rights away from masses of people, essentially to coddle their consciences and pretend their vote wasn’t a vote for injustice itself—this is evidence that enforcing accountability via social means WORKS, and plenty of these assholes are indeed afraid of it.
Could you specify what rights that Trump has threatened?
Yeah, sure.
“Sealioning is the name given to a specific, pervasive form of aggressive cluelessness, that masquerades as a sincere desire to understand.
A Sealion is a person who, when confronted with a fact that they don’t care to acknowledge, say, the persistence of systemic racism in America, will ask endlessly for ‘proof’ and insist that it is the other person’s job to stop everything they are doing and address the issue to their satisfaction.
Sealions are just ‘asking nicely’ but they are asking questions that have been asked and answered fully many times, and are unwilling to so much as open a tab to look up the answer, nor will they recognize the validity of your sources, your experience or expertise.”
— Erica Friedman
My two favorite instablock reblogs of this post are 1) people who go “BUT BURDEN OF PROOF! BURDEN OF PROOF!” at my refusal to repeatedly explain Donald “Muslim Registry” Trump’s well-publicized and effortlessly googleable impending rights violations, and 2) people who say Nazis or alt-right also-Nazis or white nationalist Cool Ranch Nazis or Klan members or whoever turn to genocidal hatred because leftists like me are mean. It's a tie between “shame doesn’t work and this random study I don’t understand proves it” and “shaming bigots makes you just as bad as bigots” for 3rd place.

To explain how certain bodies are marked as disposable and violable, as legitimate targets of state and vigilante violence, it is necessary to examine the ways in which law works to affix assumptions about behavior onto bodies. Historically, law has criminalized the recreational activities, survival economies, and intimate relationships of people of color so the status of ‘being of color’ was inseparable from conduct assumed to be ‘criminal.’ Before anti-racist legislation was implemented following the civil rights movement, law criminalized and reified marginalized identities as statuses. Being 'colored’ was a status that formed the basis for exclusionary, discriminatory, and regulatory laws, such as Jim Crow. What we call 'identity categories’ in the contemporary era functioned historically as excludable or includable statuses in segregation, naturalization, and immigration law. Today’s laws that criminalize conduct contingent on status have inherited this history.

Aaaaaah!!! This is awesome!!!
YES ARIELL, WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU
Let’s talk about “Good Cops”
I am more and more convinced that true revolutionaries must perceive the revolution, because of its creative and liberating nature, as an act of love. For me, the revolution, which is not possible without a theory of revolution — and therefore of science — is not irreconcilable with love. On the contrary: the revolution is made by people to achieve their humanization. What, indeed, is the deeper motive which moves individuals to become revolutionaries, but the dehumanization of people? The distortion imposed on the word “love” by the capitalist world cannot prevent the revolution from being essentially loving in character, nor can it prevent the revolutionaries from affirming their love of life. Guevara (while admitting the “risk of seeming ridiculous”) was not afraid to affirm it. “Let me say, with the risk of appearing ridiculous, that the true revolutionary is guided by strong feelings of love. It is impossible to think of an authentic revolutionary without this quality.”
Paulo Freire | Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1968)
