I am so frustrated with how little all the big animation studios are willing to experiment with new styles. They’re just…. striving for gritty hyperrealism?? But why????? It’s a cartoon!! You’re allowed to make it look like cartoons!!! Please tell me I’m not the only who wants less realistic animation?
like…. The new Lightyear trailer looks pretty, sure! But the direction they went with the color design is so…. ggg??? such a weird choice considering Buzz Lightyear is supposed to represent the epitome of late 90’s-Y2K cyber space campiness.
yall remember the tv show? it looked like math blasters. but in a good way
hell even Toy Story 2 showed a lot of that retro-futuristic approach
so for Lightyear to look like… this is kind of disappointing:
This last shot is the most colorful shot in the trailer, but it still seems way less vibrant in comparison to everything else I showed. I’m HOPING it was an artistic decision to show contrast between Earth and Space, and so they made Earth as bland-looking as possible. But if the last shot is as vibrant and Shaped as it’s going to get, then perhaps I’m just being naive.
I do see some of that Star Tours/Space Mountain-esque architectural design, but it’s still just so dull? Where are the glowing greens and electric purples and hot pinks and neon oranges 🤌
okay like y’know how at this point we’ve all acknowledged that, in video games, the colorful, simplistic, and heavily stylized ones age wayyy better than the grungy realistic ones, and are often way more fun to play? Why is that so much harder for people to grasp when it comes to animation?
