imo the best way to interpret those “real people don’t do x” writing advice posts is “most people don’t do x, so if a character does x, it should be a distinguishing trait.” human behavior is infinitely varied; for any x, there are real people who do x. we can’t make absolute statements. we can, however, make probabilistic ones.

for example, most people don’t address each other by name in the middle of a casual conversation. if all your characters do that, your dialogue will sound stilted and unnatural. but if just one character does that, then it tells us something about that character.

First of all, I want to say that I love your work. It makes me so happy! I'm pretty sure that has to do with your color scheme. So, I just wanted to ask, how do you choose your colors?

🌿 This website is amazing for color palettes and there’s so many of them to choose from! But I realized that I kinda suck at sticking to palettes someone else made so I gave up on using pre-made color schemes haha.

🌿For my art I always use soft colors with a pop of brighter/contrasting colors. I use Paint tool SAI as my main drawing program and I always have the HSV slider and color swaches options enabled.

🌿 I’ve saved a lot of colors on my swatch pad throughout the years (5 years so far) so when I’m coloring a piece I always choose from the colors I already saved and then I adjust them through the HSV slider if needed. Here’s my swatch pad:

🌿 When working on pieces with one dominant color I like to mix warmer shades with cooler shades of that color. Here’s my Sailor Moon piece as an example:

🌿 For my Kiki matching set I knew I wanted it to look soft yet have contrasting colors (‘cause that’s the kinda colors Kiki wears). Colors can also look different depending on what other colors you pair them with and even tho  I picked a pink-ish color and a orange-y color for her shirt/cap and jacket,they actually come off more as red and yellow (at least that’s how I see it idk haha).

Just a short drabble I've had sitting around after I woke up in the middle of the night and hammered this out before passing out again.

I feel like a better rule than “Show, don’t tell” is “Express, don’t state”

Because a lot of people interpret “show don’t tell” as “use visuals instead of dialog” or “play out scenes instead of referencing/describing them” which is an arbitrary rule that doesn’t communicate well what the issue is.

What I mean by “Express, don’t state” is that the facts of your story should be conveyed through the story’s elements instead of stated in the story.

If a character is depressed or guilt ridden, it should be expressed through their attitude, their actions, their decisions, their reactions, etc. instead of stating “this character is depressed”. Whether it’s done through dialog or a visual of a rainy cloud doesn’t matter, because it’s still conveyed directly to the audience instead of being evident in the text itself.

In fact, sometimes having a character describe a scene or a diagnosis or whatever using dialog can express a lot more than showing the scene itself.

Working on pacing is literally the worst thing.

It’s so hard to find the will to fix something that has all the right content and all the right words, but somehow still reads wrong.

For anyone else who might struggle with pacing in some parts of their story, the solution that’s worked for me without fail is:

Print out the section and read through it with the kind of open mind you’d have if you’re opening up a book from your favorite author.

Make note of the places that feel awkward (usually, these places are far fewer and far between than you might think!).

Rewrite the whole thing, giving special attention to those places.

Usually, one round of this does it for me, but if you give it another as-if-it’s-written-by-your-favorite-author read-through and it still falls flat, rinse and repeat!
