I hate people from Colorado. I had to go backpacking with a group of them once. It was supposed to be a trip for people halfway between “beginner” and “intermediate” experience, and while I’ve camped a lot and can hike for hours, the Midwest is very flat and low. All these sculpted, high-altitude Colorado residents with their lung capacity and endurance and efficient oxygen use absolutely destroyed me. I was panting along behind them as they zipped up the mountain like Tolkien Elves taunting my doughy Hobbiton body. I gurgled through my water as they zipped along, barely stopping to breathe, looking back at me piteously as I gnashed my teeth and fought my flesh every step of the way.
At least when we reached the glacial lake, I was able to boast my own adaptations by swimming comfortably in icy runoff and stretching out on the ice while their svelte bodies shivered and nearly shut down.

Jokes on them though, I can breathe air anywhere from “100 degree soup” to “-40 and mostly made of frost.” and, as you said, can go swimming in, basically, glacial meltwater with ice chunks floating in it.
I mean, to be fair, we Coloradans also swim in glacial/alpine lakes all the time. I swam in a lovely one that used to be a volcano while out hunting late last year.
@systlin If you come up here you really only need to frolick around the mountains for about a month to start seeing long-lasting benefits to your stamina and anaerobic tolerance, but noticable benefits in as little as a week. Do like an anime protagonist anf train under absurd conditions to reach new levels of badassedry!
@glumshoe If you come out not only will you have an opportunity to hate geologists in thier natural habitat, if you come in late summer to early winter we have a truly magnificent array of native mushrooms, slime molds and other fungi in bloom, which seems like your Jam.

I work in a park and lived outdoors at a hilly nature camp for years and my red blood cell count never increased to match that of people who live at high elevations with thinner atmospheres. It’s not Nature and spirit, it’s my bone marrow getting complacent with too much oxygen.
